Review: Yes to Coconut Cooling Lip Oil

A few months ago, Yes to released their new Yes to Coconut line. When I first spotted a small display at Walgreens, I purchased and reviewed the new Yes to Coconut Restoring Balm (which I'm still loving for my cuticles, by the way).

In the second wave of Yes to Coconut products, they released the Cooling Lip Oil, which is one of two lip products now in the Yes to Coconut line. When I spotted this at Target last month, I just had to have it. Now that I've been using it for several weeks, I'd love to share my thoughts with you, in case you've been curious about this one too!

Yes to Coconut Cooling Lip Oil
(retail: $4.99, 0.30 oz)

From the Yes to website:

An intense lip moisturizer that adds a natural shine.

This lip oil provides long lasting nourishment, softness, and fits just about anywhere (talk about a triple threat!). This new lip oil will quench dry lips with decadent oils, that also cool while it moisturizes. Formulated with a plethora of oils: Virgin Coconut, Olive, and cooling Eucalyptus, your lips will be intensely moisturized and soft. Throw in an added hint of natural shine, and you will be ready for coconut kisses (under the sun!)

99% Natural
Petroleum, SLS, & Paraben Free
Cruelty-free

I'm very happy to report that the tube itself comes fully encased in a plastic safety-seal (great news, because the outer box is very easy to open):

There's nothing worse than an outer box that's easy to open, coupled with a tube that doesn't have a strong safety seal. So I can't stress enough that I'm thankful Yes to chose to add a safety seal on a product sold at Target, drugstores, etc. Because you and I both know that people love to open boxes and ruin it for the rest of us.

As you can see, this product comes in a long, narrow tube. For perspective, it's roughly about 1-1/2 inches longer than a Nivea lip balm.

The tube has a slant-tip applicator and a screw-top lid which does a great job at preventing leaks. This tube has been tumbling around my purse, on and off my nightstand, and basically all over my house without any leakage.

Texture and consistency: For perspective, this oil is thicker than say, plain olive oil. It has a cushiony type of feeling to it that I really love. It's not sticky at all, and it feels luxurious on the lips. I'm doing a horrible job at explaining this, but if you were afraid that this might feel like plain ol' olive oil, think again. It's quite lovely, to the point of almost feeling decadent.

Moisturization: There are so many skin-loving oils packed into this little tube, and some of those oils always seem to work well for me (castor, coconut and olive). There's also some shea butter in here too. It's been very hot and humid here in San Diego for the past few weeks, and this has done a nice job at preventing my lips from cracking and bleeding, which tends to happen to me when the weather's like this. I've been using this quite liberally for the past few weeks and I have noticed that my lips have been consistently softer and smoother.

Staying power: I tend to press my lips together a lot when I'm wearing any type of lip product, and I just can't help doing it even more often when I'm wearing this. Like I mentioned above, this oil feels so luxurious on the lips that just can't stop smooshing it around. So yeah, staying power isn't the greatest for me, but I will say that even with all the heavy-duty smooshing I'm doing, I can get about two hours of wear before I feel the need to reapply. Your results could obviously be different. Oh and before I forget, there's a very nice shine to this (duh, it's an oil) but after about 30 minutes, the shine does dull down to a more subtle sheen.

Flavor and fragrance: This is where this oil is going to make or break it for you. Upon initial application, it feels like I'm putting Christmas trees on my lips. That is seriously the best way I can describe. The menthol and eucalyptus mix with the coconut in such a way that it both smells and tastes like, well, pine trees. But not to fear! After about a minute on my lips, the pine flavor/fragrance fade and it starts to both smell and taste like coconut. Strange, I know, but the longer I use this the more I'm drawn to it. Again, your experience may be different, but I've grown to like this lip oil in all of its phases! And yes, it is cooling as indicating on the package, but not in a burn-your-eyes type of hardcore menthol way. It's softer than that, but I do feel a minty sensation on my lips for the first hour of wear.

FINAL VERDICT: I love this one, and I will definitely repurchase. It feels luxurious on the lips, it provides lots of moisture, and while the fragrance and flavor are definitely a "journey," it's a journey I find myself wanting to take again and again. If you're drawn to anything I've said in this review, I say give this one a shot. You just won't know until you try it!

  2. Oh, no! I was so excited to see the positive review from this as my night time balm isn't always the best choice and not a day time wear. As soon as you said Eucalyptus and how it adds to the fragrance, it sunk for me. Euac. gives me a massive headache.

Hopefully they will come out with other scents/flavors and I will be sure to try those out. :)

  3. Ooo can't wait to try this! It will be great in winter. I picked up the cleansing wipes and they smell heavenly and feel good, but they are definitely not makeup remover wipes. I don't think they claim to be, but i wouldn't repurchase because I'd rather use my other wipes that do remove it. Thanks for the review!

  4. Love, love, love oils! The only thing that scares me is the "cooling" part. But after reading your review, it sounds like it isn't too overbearing. I'll give it a whirl! Thanks for the review, G!

  10. I picked this up a few weeks ago, too, and I LOVE it! It's got a great slip; not too sticky, not too slick, and I love that it's got a weird oily gel kind of texture.... that's the best way I can think to describe it, really. I love the eucalyptus/menthol tingle, and I tend to smoosh this around on my lips, too.

    1. Same here, totally agree! Only thing is I use it as a night treatment as it feels too slick to wear under lipstick...gloss maybe. G. It really does have a Christmas tree like essence, one that's adorned with marshmellows! Love it, bought it at Target and the nxt wk they rolled out the balm/stick version...dang!

  15. I wasn't sure if I'd like this due to the eucalyptus, but I totally do! And I'm 110% with you on the plastic seal! YES, YES, YES! I'm constantly checking products to make sure they haven't been opened/tampered with before buying, but I somehow manage to STILL walk out of there with something that someone else has "swatched" on my dime. I loveeee impossible-to-open packaging on cosmetics.
