Review & Swatches: Sinful Colors Starry Night

Starry Night is not a new shade. It first debuted as a Walmart-exclusive back in December of 2013. Then, when Walgreens reset their permanent display in February 2014, they added Starry Night to the core collection. But for those of you who don't live near a Walgreens or never got it when it was a Walmart-exclusive, it has just been repromoted in the new Summer 2014 OMGeode Collection, which is now popping up at Rite Aid. So you do have another chance to get it, and I couldn't resist when I spotted it at my local Rite Aid the other day. By the way, neither of the two NEW shades in the OMGeode Collection caught my eye, so I didn't get either one. Boo!

So let's take a closer look at Starry Night...

Sinful Colors Starry Night
(retail: $1.99, 0.5 oz)

Starry Night is a black jelly with tiny, square holographic glitters and metallic gold shards.

Three coats, no top coat:

Starry Night required three coats for good opacity (not shocking considering that it's a jelly). It was a tiny bit thick/goopy but not difficult to work with. The square holo glitters sparkle more in person than what you see in these pics--they're quite pretty against the black jelly background. The metallic gold shards are very sparse, so you'll be lucky to get a few on your brush when you pull it out of the bottle. I had to fish them out with my brush and even then, I didn't manage to get one on my pinky nail. If you're not one for shards, you can easily brush them off against the side of the bottle before applying to your nail, considering that you'll probably only get one or two on your brush at a time (if you're lucky).

This polish dries somewhat shiny but it's super bumpy, which diminishes the shine. You'll definitely need a few thick coats of top coat to smooth it out. Dry-time was very good, even after three coats.

And because you know I always have to "mattify all the glitters", here's what Starry Night looks like after two coats of matte top coat:

I had to use two coats of matte top coat here, because it was still kind of bumpy after one. The gold shards are a lot more prominent when worn as a matte...I'm not quite sure if I really like this look or not!

  1. I love this polish! I found it last year and being a glitter lover, I had to have it.

  3. That's a pretty one, and I've wondered about it for a few months. That it took a couple top coats to smooth out, though, makes me inclined to take a pass.

  4. I'm so glad you posted this swatch, otherwise I would've missed that this was in the OMGeode collection! I'm so glad, because I don't have any Walgreens around. Thanks for the swatches!

  5. I love this one! I bought it back in the winter and got a lot of compliments on it. So unique. Worth the effort in my opinion. :)

  6. It's been awhile since I bought my bottle, but I think I might have thinned it out a bit. If it wasn't for all the glowing reviews I would have returned it. After I wear it again I'll come back and review it; I can't remember it fully right now.

  7. I own it, love it, and usually layer it over a coat of black polish to cut down on the bumpiness.

  8. This reminds me of color of my husband's car. His car is such a shiny black with a really dense but fine multi-color glitter in it that you can see up close. I was OBSESSSED last summer trying to find a nail polish just like his car. I finally found a Color Club that fit the bill, but I hadn't I would absolutely buy this one and ditch the shards!

  9. I've been wanting this for a while! Every time I see it, I pick it up with the intention of buying it but then put it back down... just can't seem to justify getting it, but can't stay away either! :)
