Review: Maybelline Limited Edition Color Tattoos in Matte Brown and Nude Pink

Finally, right? I literally stalked my local drugstores for the Maybelline Limited Edition Gilded in Gold Collection Color Tattoos, and it wasn't until reader crissypo left a comment on the Sightings Map post (thanks again for that, Crissy!) that I found two of the three shades in this collection. I still haven't been able to find Just Beige, which seems to be the most popular shade in this collection...maybe someday!

So in case you've been thinking about hunting for these, I thought I'd give you my two cents about how they've been working for me...

Two of the Maybelline Limited Edition Gilded in Gold Collection Color Tattoos
(retail: around $6.99 each, 0.14 oz)

260 Matte Brown, 250 Nude Pink

First let's start with Matte Brown:

I applied Matte Brown with my fingers in the photos above, and I did not apply any type of primer beforehand. This shade looks like a cross between cocoa brown and taupe on my eyes, and I love it even more than I thought I would when I first posted pics of it. It really brings out the green in my hazel eyes, and I love that it's not too dark and not too light.

The consistency is nice--it's smooth and doesn't go on too patchy (unless you wait too long to blend it out, in which case it WILL get patchy). I've also applied this shade with an eyeliner brush, as eyeliner, and it works great for me that way too.

This is one of those shades that can be worn easily on its own on a light makeup day, and also as a primer for brown and taupe shadows. If you're a cocoa brown or taupe fan, I think you might like this one quite a bit.

Next up, Nude Pink:

Nude Pink really helps cancel out the discoloration on my lids, in a way that's even better than some of my favorite eyeshadow primers. This shade looks like a neutral cream with slight pinkish-gray undertones on my skintone, and it doesn't look nearly as pink on me as it does in the pot (I'm so thankful for that, since I normally can't pull off pinks near my eyes).

I applied Nude Pink with my fingers in the photos above, and I did not apply any type of primer beforehand. The consistency of this shade is even better than Matte Brown. It's super creamy, easy to blend and you can easily go back and build for more pigmentation, if you wanted to, without it becoming cakey or patchy.

I don't like wearing this shade by itself because, on my particular skintone, it does nothing to really enhance my eyes. BUT, I absolutely love it as primer. Again, look how it cancels out my discoloration! It provides such a nice base for just about every powder shadow I own. So versatile!

FINAL VERDICT: Both of these shades are a home-run for me, and I almost hate to say that since I know how hard it's been for some of you to find this collection in your area. But don't give up hope! I've been hearing from more and more readers over the past week who have, rather unexpectedly, stumbled across new, full displays in their areas. So they just might be coming to a drugstore near you soon. If you see them, and you're drawn to either of these colors, I wouldn't hesitate to pick them up. They're both extremely versatile and, even if you don't like how they look when worn alone, they both make great primers for powder shadows. They both keep my powder shadows crease-free and vivid for a full work day, no problem.

Have you found the Gilded in Gold Collection in your area yet? Did you grab any of the Color Tattoos? I would love to hear from you!

  2. Interesting. So I purchased Just Beige but it does apply patchy for me. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong? It could also be that I'm comparing it to my favorite Mac painterly paintpot which is totally worth the money. I should do swatches to compare the two to see how they apply.

    1. I just received my Mac Painterly paint pot in yesterday's mail and absolutely love it! Read so many great reviews about it on MUA. I wanted a shade to wear everyday for a neutral eye. I love that it is matte and it lasts all day long. If anybody is on the fence, it is totally worth every cent. Hope this helps.

  3. I bought Nude Pink specifically to use as a base/primer and I love it. On it's own it can't even be seen on my eyelid as the color is a very close match to my pale skin tone. It is working better than any other shadow primer that I own. I'm hitting the drugstores this weekend to see if I can find more. Definitely need a backup (or two) of this.

  4. I have all 3 shades and Just Beige is my least favorite! It gets really patchy toward my inner corner. I love to use Matte Brown as a base and layer Stila Kitten eyeshadow over the top of it, so pretty!

  5. A year ago I would have been desperate to find these.. but Milani/Jordana beat them to the punch. Since they are LE as well, I'm not even trying to find them.

    1. I agree with your comment about not pursuing these LE Color Tattoos. Seriously, what is the point of producing a product that many of us would love to have and then distributing the product as a limited edition product? Ugh.

  6. By some FREAKISH stroke of luck I found all THREE in my CVS (that's tiny and never has anything current) I'm loving them and agree that the pink also dupes as a great primer!

  9. I purchased both shades and I love matte brown so much I haven't opened the pink one yet. Matte brown is so versatile on my deep skin that it looks very natural on my lids and doubles as a great base for any shadow. If I stumble across another another matte brown I'm getting a back up. Also, If I see a beige I don't mind snagging for you :-)

  10. I have Matte Brown and Nude Pink and LOVE them both. I've found that Urban Decay PP + Nude Pink + shadow lasts perfectly all day (I have super oily lids, so these do crease on me without primer :( ). I've gone out and bought two more for backups. Every CVS in the Houston, TX area has the display now. Love love love these two!

  11. Oh no! I had all in my sights a few weeks ago but only went for Nude Pink. I thought it'd be darker/more noticeable on my eyes and give soft, everyday definition but unfortunately it's about the same on me as you - neutral and, well, nude! Now I'm wondering if I should've gotten the others :/ my Rite Aid always gets things late so maybe I'll still be able to pick them up!

  12. They had all the colors at my local Wegman's! I only bought the pink one though and I love it!

  13. I have all three, and Nude Pink is absolutely my favorite. I blend it all over my lid with my finger, toss a little bronzer in my crease, throw on some mascara, and voila! That's my everyday, wear-to-work look. Conservative office; can you tell?

Just Beige is a little too light and makes my eyelids look ashy (and I am a pale mofo, let me tell you. Like, NC10 pale). It works well as a base, but not on its own as a shadow. It just looks funky on me, and it makes my inner corners look dry.

Matte Brown is a lovely color, but I notice creasing by the end of the day that is not my typical experience with Color Tattoos. I haven't used it as a base yet, but I plan to. Hopefully it won't crease with some powder to set it.

  14. I checked 3 Walgreens today. To say I'm obsessed would be right on the mark!!!

I am thinking that Nude Pink could be used like one of those highlighter pens for the cupid's bow or under the lower eyelid. You know what I mean? I'm gonna give it a try when I can get these.

  15. Glad to hear they're still popping up as I still haven't seen a trace of them!

  16. Thanks for the review, G. I do not think either will work for my tan skintone.

  17. I bought the entire collection after finally finding it as I had previously commented. I used the Nude Pink and loved it. It shows up really well on my skintone. I didn't try the others yet, but I'm glad to know I'm not just being greedy by being the only one looking for back ups. I won't break my neck like the first time, but definitely will keep my eyes open hopefully to find more CT's.

  19. Walked into a random CVS that I've never been to this past weekend in search for these and I didn't think I'd find them, but they were there!!! I was so happy I only picked up matte brown and the beige because the matte pink was sold out. But I was so happy! Love them and hopefully I can find the matte pink one soon. Don't give up hope if you are still looking for them, just look in unexpected places and hopefully they'll pop up. :)
