The Wednesday Question (Palettes vs. Singles edition)

Do you prefer palettes or individual compacts? If you like palettes, do you like to make your own (by depotting pans or buying individual pans) or do you prefer to buy pre-made palettes?

I am generally an "individual compact" type of gal. A pre-made palette has to be pretty darned special for me to purchase it (i.e. Urban Decay Naked palette). But if the palette is a good price and it features a lot of shades I think I'll wear, I'll buy it. I never really got into making my own palettes (depotting pans from compacts and placing them into empty palettes), but I think it can be very handy and convenient, as well as a huge space-saver.

  1. Palettes for me. I love having them all in one spot. Huge bonus if the palette contains everything that the brand makes for a certain line or what not. I tend to be a collector so I want them all.

  2. I like palettes, pre-made ones, but it depends on the size. I actually have a habit of holding mine, so say the large size ELF palette (I think it's the 144?), HUGE. I don't see myself reaching for that one often.

I only have the ELF make your own palettes, actually a lot easier to do than trying to pry the pan out (ala MAC style).

  3. I like small palettes. I don't utilize them well if there are more then 8 colors or so.

  4. singles, or a neutral palette, ive bought a few palettes with ranges of shades and usually only end up using about two, without making a dent in the others.

  6. I think I'm pretty equal on this, it's hard for me to choose. I have a ton of palettes and a ton of singles, and I'd say I use both types equally as much. lol I fail at answering this question!

    1. No fails here! lol! All responses are greatly appreciated and I bet you're not alone in loving both equally! :D

  7. Singles. I never use all of the colors in a palette. I seem to use 2, maybe 3 shades in a palette and rarely touch the rest. I do like palettes for travel though, I like the convenience of having several shades in one compact rather than cluttering up my makeup bag with a bunch of single shadows.

  8. I love palettes! But ones with less than 20 colors. I had a Sephora blockbuster one once, and I never used it because it was so unwieldy. I ended up throwing it away.

I also really like depotting because it saves so much space. I like the idea and option of mixing and matching to make my own palette, but I'm not the greatest at picking colors to go together; hence, why I like pre-made palettes so much!

    1. I wish that more palettes could be depotted. I acquired a magnetic palette box and was really excited to depot some of my tins, when I realized that most of them would likely not survive the extricating process.

  9. Singles I can put into a palette myself. I rarely like all the colors in a premade palette, and if I got bored I like being able to switch things out. I do like having a self-fill palette, though. Makes travel much easier.

  10. I prefer palettes so I can get a range of colors all in one convenient tray. It is also a plus that they were chosen to create a certain look.

  11. I tend to like both. When it comes to palettes, I'm more on the lookout for a sale (like with a few Urban Decay smaller palettes) so that I can get an idea of what the different colors are like and how they can kind of work together. I think it's kinda fun to try it out. But I wouldn't want to spend a lot of money on a palette unless I knew I would definitely be into the colors. That's when I tend to go for singles where I know I'll be into the color.

  12. I strongly prefer palettes and try to avoid singles as much as possible. I have have singles or smaller palettes that can be combined then I'll do so into larger ones. The take up way less space.

  13. To be honest, I get overwhelmed when I have too many singles and yet, I find that palettes with more than 8 pans are also overwhelming. In summary, I guess I like to have several "go-to" singles and a few small quads or palettes for days when I can't be bothered to think of good eyeshadow single pairings. This is a good question!

  14. I like palettes, but I think I've been leaning more toward singles lately. I was first introduced to them by my aunt who sent me two 88 color coastal scents palettes. So far I have only used a handful of the 88 colors and I've had them for about 3 years! I lean more toward neutrals than crazy colors so maybe that has something to do with it..

  15. I like both singles and smaller palettes, as long as there is some overreaching theme or congruency in the palette colors that makes it so it would make sense for me to have each color. Generally, I like to have singles of my shades that I wear as a wash (usually shimmery taupes or something similarly inconspicuous) so I can have more of that shade/travel with them easier, but I like having a small palette of more experimental color palettes. I really don't like large palettes, I find them overwhelming because they make me want to try EVERYTHING and then I end up looking like I have a black eye. I also find that when I get larger palettes, the overall quality of the shadow goes down. But smaller palettes are great; my cousin gave me a Chanel quad and it is fantastic. On a more affordable level, I really like Clinique palettes and NYX three shade palettes.

  16. I prefer palettes, but my dream is that all eyeshadow pans were the same size and shape, so I can take a color out of the palette and put it in an individual compact for travel. It's ok that it's just a dream, though, since I don't travel much at all right now. The reason I prefer palettes is because I like the variety and how overall, price per color, palettes are cheaper.

  17. Palettes. I find singles too cumbersome to store and use since you have to deal with each individual color one at a time. I also much prefer to see the colors next to each other when determining which to use that day, and I like the convenience of predetermined combinations. I prefer palettes with a "theme" and ones that are "complete" (with one or more appropriate light, medium, and dark colors) vs a random collection of colors. I own mostly trios and quads, with some duos and a few large palettes.. and very few singles, mostly products that are only available in that format.. like the Loreal infallible shadows for example... and a few "workhorses" like a good transition color and WnW nutty and brulee, that enhance any palette. I have never attempted to depot my shadows.. I've heard too many horror stories about broken product both during and after the procedure. They are much more fragile when not protected by the hard case surrounding the pans.

    1. I've seen that a broken pressed powder can be fixed by making a paste with rubbing alcohol and then leaving it open to dry overnight... I wonder if that would make the process easier or less prone to failure?

I've never tried it, this is actually the first time I've even heard of depotting... but it is a cool idea!

  18. It doesn't make a difference to me because I end up depotting all of them anyway into my z palettes! No premade palette can compare to a z palette with my favorite eyeshadows, blushes, brow powders, etc. Save so much space and time since I don't have to open up a million tiny compacts, palettes and singles.

  19. I prefer singles, because I find that with palettes, I won't wear half of the shades and they are also harder to store in my makeup storage system. The only palettes I really like and actually use on a regular basis are my Elf "neutral eye" palette and the Profusion holiday 2012 palettes (LOVE. THEM.)

  20. I don't even know how to answer this! I love fancy high end pallettes and if they are LE then forget it I have to have it even though I hardly touch the eye shadows. My absolute faves are all lip pallettes. That being said I wish drugstores would sell empty pallettes reasonably priced that had a magnetic or stickyy base FOR DIY!

  21. I really like pallettes, but not the huge ones. More than 10 shades is just too many in one spot. I'm a huge fan of coordinated ones, like the Wet & Wild or Covergirl three-or-four shade stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Palettes, always. I have maybe two single shadows and I never, ever end up using them because it's so much easier for me to just grab a palette from my make-up drawer and bring it with me to the bathroom as opposed to two or three little shadows (that I sometimes end up dropping too /o\).

  23. I definitely shop for palettes more than I do singles. I tend to buy singles only if the formula is wonderful and if the color is unique, or a favorite, or as someone else put it--a "workhorse" color (like the perfect brow color, transitional color, highlight, etc.)

I only depot shadows when it comes in packaging I don't care for or single shadows. I'm pretty clumsy and messy, and I guess I'm more prone to knocking things over if there's a bunch of singles on my counter versus a single palette. I have a few large Z palettes for storage and a few smaller one's for color combo's I want to use.

  24. I'm gonna have to go with palettes. One reason is because it saves money rather than buying the shadows individually, and another reason is because you're getting quality shadows that usually have a color theme within the palette. On the other hand, I don't mind buying individuals from time to time if I want specific colors that don't come in palettes because I depot them into my Z Palette anyway.

  25. I am obsessed with eyeshadow palettes with more than 6 colors but less than 20 colors, as I won't be utilizing the larger palettes. I'd love to actually collect anything from Sleek, MUA, Luscious Cosmetic, Essence, Technic as they seem to have high pigmentation.

Also, I love the pre-made palettes as well, I'd love to try things from MAC or Inglot, but they're basically out of my price range, so I might just buy these pre-made palettes from Elianto.

  26. I'm definitely a palette kinda girl. Something about all those pretty colors, sparkling like little jewels, all packed together in a snazzy compact...

I'm a sucker. Let's just call it like it is!!!

  28. my answer is pretty much the same as yours -- in theory, i prefer the idea of palettes, but in reality, im probably more of an individual gal. i love the idea of one kit containing everything i might want, but rarely do i find a palette that HAS everything i want (or that i think i would use the majority of what's there), and since they cost more, i dont find them to be the deal i wish they were.
i DO own a few palettes, though, because when i travel, it's nice to just grab a few pieces instead of my entire arsenal!

i've been wanting the naked palettes (either or both!) for quite some time and have just never pulled the trigger on them.

  29. Oh gosh, I am such a sucker for a palette! I have a bad weakness for a neutral colored palette.

I really need to get organized and get all my singles depotted and placed in a single palette. I would probably utilize what I have if they were all easily accessible.

  30. I used to be all about singles, and I still think they are more economical in the long run. Lately, however, I've been buying more palettes than singles. When the colors in a palette happen to be especially pretty together, I will often buy it whether the individual colors are ideal or not. I feel compelled to buy every WnW palette I find.

  31. I love palettes. 4-12 colors the perfect size. They are easy to use as the colors general are made to work together. Lorac Unzipped is my absolute favorite one.

  32. I actually love big palettes. I'm not an individual kind of person because I find it very boring in my opinion haha

  33. I love my palettes! I love having a big variety of colors to play with.. It's very rare that there's a color I won't use.. singles are clumsy and more expensive IMO
