The Wednesday Question

Hello! Sorry for the 2-day absence from all things blog-related, but I've been feeling a bit under the weather (feeling a bit better now). So let's kick off the week with the Wednesday Question:

When it comes to drugstore beauty, which product would you deem your "biggest disappointment"?

  1. I would say the Maybelline MegaPlush Volume mascara. The brush is to week and it doesn't delivers volume. Such disappointment especially because everyone in the YouTube community raves about it. I'm better off sticking to my Wet & Wild MegaLenght mascara, my HG, and so much cheaper.

  2. The only drugstore product I have ever tried to return was the Color Tattoo in Audacious Asphalt. I have several other CTs and they are all fantastic, but the formula of that color was horrific. Thankfully, Target accepted it back!

  3. I have 2.

    1. Maybelline Great Lash. Why is this the favorite of beauty editors? Why do so many people like it? It (and all its iterations I've tried) suck. Big time.

    2. Maybelline Color Tattoo. Creases, patchy. I honestly don't know why I can't get this to work for me when everyone loves these.

  4. I'm going to go with drugstore BB creams in general.

  5. Maybelline Great Lash, I call it the great Pink & Green dissapointment. Glops of goo that would make Alice Cooper proud...lol. Oh and the W&W eyeshadow palettes, awesome color payoff, fantastic combinations but they crumble after just a bit, I buy 2 at a time just for that reason.

  6. Revlon Colorstay liquid foundation. I have tried for a few years to get this one to work for me but, it just looks a mess.

  7. Maybelline 'The Falsies' made my lashes look spidery and strange! Also clumps terribly!

  8. This one's easy - Garnier BB Cream. Too much fragrance, too oily, no coverage, not cheap. Also very difficult to apply - kept sliding everywhere.

  9. Revlon's Lip Butters, they just aren't that moisturizing for me and if that weren't enough, I've tried 4 or 5 different colors and none of them were particularly flattering either...

  10. I have so many.
1.Covergirl Natureluxe: everyone raved about it, even those with combo skin loved it. But it made my skin more oily, even in the winter where my skin is dried out a bit.

2.Maybelline One by One. Again everyone loved it, but it did nothing but clump.

3.Rimmel London BB cream. I recently got it and it has a weird gray cast and I can't seem to get it to work.

  11. For me it was Cover Girl Clump Crusher Mascara. It gets mega raves but it did absolutely nothing for me. No length, no volume, no curl. It's the only mascara I have ever returned.

  12. I am going "second " the whole BB Cream thing. I just don't get it! I get better coverage from my HG Ultimate Sheer tinted moisterizer from WNW.

  13. About 5 years ago, I bought a really pretty eye shadow quad at the drugstore b/c my sister always buys drugstore. I think it was one of the big 3: Maybelline, Covergirl or Revlon -- but when I tried to apply the shadows to my eyelid, it was like air/dust. There was nothing to see. It was like The Emperor's New Eyeshadow, lol.

I didn't buy drugstore eyeshadow again until I started doing some research on the internet. So last summer, I bought the Color Tattoos in Tough as Taupe and Audacious Asphalt and returned both because Tough as Taupe was so hideous on me -- so FLAT and DULL; I didn't even try Audacious Asphalt. Based on a little more knowledge, I have gone & gotten Bad to the Bronze, Barely Branded and Inked in Pink though and I do like them very much.

I also went and bought 4 of the Physician's Formula Shimmer Strips Eye Enhancing Shadow and Liner based on Emily Noel's recommendations last summer. I was pretty disappointed. I apparently do not care for eyeshadows that are not in separate pans, especially when the strips of color are really thin. More disappointingly, I thought the color payoff was weak on a lot of the shades. Among the four I'd gotten were the Nude Collection and the Smoky Collection; I returned them all.

And it's true: Maybelline's Great Lash is JUST awful.

  14. Maybelline Great lash Mascara. I know it's supposed to a top seller, but the brush is so itty bitty, it takes a long time to cover your lashes with even one coat With such a little brush and it only puts a weee bit of product on so you have to make several coats to get any real coverage. I will still use what I have, but I won't buy any more. Samesies with Wet n Wild Megalast Liquid Lip Color. It does last for hours and hours even after eating 2 meals and the color was still strong. But now the downside, it was drying and felt grainy on my lips and I had to keep reapplying lip balm to get over the dry icky sandpapery feeling it left behind.

    1. I agree 100% about Maybelline great lash. I don't get it.

  15. Pretty much any drugstore foundation, ever. I'm very, very pale, verging on paper white, and it seems like every time I try a drugstore pale shade, it's either way too pink, making me look slightly sunburned, or yellow-toned, making me look jaundiced.

I use mineral foundation from Meow Cosmetics now. The shade I use matches my skin perfectly, and makes me look like I'm not even wearing makeup.

    1. I feel the same about drugstore foundations. I always end up trying the lightest shades available but even those are too dark. Still haven't found my perfect foundation.

  16. I finally tried Maybelline's Color Tattoo. I brought the new color Barely Branded. I don't get the hype. It looks awful on me and it's hard to apply.

Also, the Covergirl Smokey Shadow Blast sticks (my first ever makeup purchase) are awful! The shadow broke off on the first use. Covergirl's Clump Crusher mascara is overhyped. I think that I will avoid that brand from now on.

  17. Drugstore concealers as a category. I love Hard Candy Glamoflage and Cover Girl's Corrector (for undereyes only), but those are the first and only ones I've liked since Almay Amazing Lasting which was, like, ten years ago.

Most recently I was disappointed by WnW Megalast liquid lip color... I knew it would peel and flake and dry out my lips, and I shouldn't have bought it, but I did, and sure enough-- peely, flaky, drying. Darn.

  18. I'd have to say Covergirl Outlast Lipstain. Just horrible. Wears off too easily but leaves a dark outline on my lips and leaves lips super dry/cracked.

    1. I remember when those first came out. (wow, 12 years or so?!) They were horrible. Sounds like they still are.

  19. All Revlon foundations, I've tried a handful of Revlon face products, including the primer and they all broke me out :( I would have loved revlon's whipped foundation if it didn't break me out.

also I'd like to 3rd the whole drugstore bb creams on a whole.

    1. This one for me as well. they would have been better off keeping the Dream Mousse blushes rather than these.

  21. Agree that Maybelline Great Lash is awful. I have never understood why Beauty Editor's rave about it. I wanted to love Revlon Illumenece Cream shadows because the colors are so pretty, and I kept buying them, but they crease, fade and disappear in about a minute, even with a primer. Nothing has helped. Haven't found a BB cream I like. I have tried five now, and I think I'm done. I do better with ELF's tinted moisturizer. I think most lines have good and bad, and I try to buy from those that I think have mostly good, but I keep my receipts so if I'm not happy I'm not stuck with a bad product.

    1. Try a Asian brand bb cream! They are a little pricy but totally worth it! If you want a foundation like bb cream I would recommend you to look in to Asian bb cream :)

  22. All maybelline mascaras (except for full n soft wp version which is one of my few HG products). They just didnt do anything for me even though I try just about every new one they release. And the loreal one sweep blush/bronzer duo. I didn't expect it to work how they expected it as a "one and done" product but I figured I could use my own brushes and techniques because the blush was a very pretty pink and the bronzer was light and cooler tones as opposed to orangey. No pigment whatsoever, and I'm a nc 20 which I would consider relatively pale. I scrubbed and tried brushes and fingers and sponges and everything but literally nothing showed up :/. And it was something like 13 bucks at Walmart.

  23. I agree with Covergirl Outlast Lipstain, it sucked! It doesn't go on even and it left a ring around my lips. I also hate Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Liner. I kept the brush cause it was nice but the liner wasn't gel at all! When I opened the jar for the first time it was so dry I had to dig the brush in too many times and it was barely coming out. i wish I had kept the receipt to return it, but thats life!

    1. It sounds like you got a dried-up Maybelline gel liner. I have 3 of them and they're spectacular (especially the blue one: so much depth!). =)

  24. Physicians Formula kohl kajal trio. After trying it, I didn't want to return it, I wanted to destroy it so that the world would have one less of them around.

Even now when I walk pass them at the store I give them a mental middle finger.

  25. Revlon Just Bitten. Both types are like disappearing ink on me. The color just completely fades in about five minutes. I've had much better results with the NYC stains, although they don't last anywhere near 6 hours on me.

I have yet to find a Maybelline mascara that wasn't horrible. I don't even try them anymore.

  26. L'Oreal one sweep eyeshadow. Such a fail!

  27. Before I go onto do some product bashing I just want to say that I'm new to this blog and totally loving it <3 But there are some disappointments I have in certain drugstore products...

1.The Revlon photoready powder is awful. It was incredibly chalky, cheap packaging, made me look like a ghost. Just gross and unflattering.

2.Any drugstore lipstains, or even high end. They are all incredibly drying for me, even with the best lip balm under or over. I'd rather invest in a good long-wear lipstick.

    3. I'm not a fan of Revlon colorstay foundation, due to the chemical smell and the messy packaging.

    4. Loreal lipsticks. They smell AWFUL, just a strange pungent smell like rotten fruit mixed with grandma. They need to pick up the tip from mac to use a nice subtle vanilla smell.

  28. Does anyone else remember Caboodles having a brand of makeup (do they still)? Back in middle school I bought one of their mascaras because it was in a package like some kind of weird test tube. I chose the silver one because I thought it would make me look like some kind of robotic sci-fi tart (in a good way).

For some reason I was really, really surprised by the fact that silver basically cancelled out my eyelashes. Even though this was no fault of the product itself, it was still very disappointing (clearly, as I'm rambling on about it fifteen years later).

  29. Maybelline Fit Me Foundation. Wow, was that horrendous. It made me break out, I have never had a reaction like that to a face product. It was under 7 bucks so of course, what else should I have expected but people raved about them. Also; I tried really hard to get into the Revlon lip butters. I find Revlon products to be excellent for the price but really, they were not that hydrating and the colors were hit or miss. The much hyped color, Peach Parfait, while a pretty color on its own, is loaded with sparkles. Sparkles. I dont believe sparkles look good on anyone over the age of 20 and certainly not in the daylight. When I wore that outside, I think I made a few people go blind.

  30. Moisturizers! I bought Aveeno clear complexion moisturizer. I get acne mostly on my jaw line but really a pimple can & will pop up anywhere. And I have noticeable pores on my cheeks & nose. This moisturizer was too slick (greasy) and did nothing for my skin. Waste imoney.

  31. Milani lipstick. I bought a few and could not tolerate the smell. I kept one, thinking that I could handle it, but I could smell it on my lips hours after application. Black Radiance Liquid Lip Colors also have a smell I can't tolerate.

  32. NYX glitter eyeshadow pallet. Sucks, very messy, and cheap. Returned it ASAP

  33. maybelline fit me powder...a compact lasted me about 2 weeks using it once a day when most powders last at least a month. and the cover girl outlast lip colors that had the color on one end and gloss on the other. the color flaked on my lips after an hour. the only reason i kept it is because now i use the clear gloss end as a sort of "glitter glue" for when i use loose glitter on my eyes when i go to a rave. oh and revlon just bitten lip stain did basically nothing for me, but i got it for like 3 dollars on the cvs beauty clearance so whatever

  34. For me, drugstore brands fail at foundation and concealer. Always something wrong: the color oxidizes, the foundation doesn't stay on for more than a few hours, skin irritations, makes me break out, not a great color match, emphasizes flakes, etc. High-end foundations can do this to me too, but it seems I get at least some luck in that area--versus none at the low-end.

Hopefully, I'll eventually find something that will work for my sensitive, combo, acne-prone, and neutral-toned light skin.

  35. All Physician's Formula products. I know people love some of them, but most of them aren't very good quality, and their marketing tactics are just absurd ("physician strength concealer"? Seriously?). No "physician" who knows anything about skin care would ever approve of using that much fragrance in face products. There is nothing "medical" or "professional" about their formulations. They rely on cute packaging and designs in their products. They intentionally price their products high so they can put them on sale, so even though you'd pay like $6-$8 for a blush from another drugstore brand, when the $16 Physician's Formula blush is on sale for $12, we're supposed to believe that's a good deal. I just find the whole line a bit offensive.
