The Wednesday Question

What do you think was the most over-hyped drugstore product of 2011?

Since I showed you my favorites of 2011 and also asked you for yours (see the Readers' Choice category) I thought it would be interesting to hear what product you thought was over-hyped and just flat out let you down last year. Please try to limit your response to drugstore products that were released in 2011. I'm really interested to see your responses! Oh, and if you're curious about what my choice would be, I'd have to say the Revlon Age Defying Cream Makeup with DNA Advantage. I loved the spiral packaging and how this product looked and felt on my hand when I swatched it in-store, but I just couldn't get over the abundance of sparkle present when applied to my face. "Age Defying" + sparkle just doesn't seem right--it actually called attention to my fine lines. Plus, it went from full coverage to sheer in a matter of a few hours on my skin. Such a bummer, because I really loved that texture and the pump applicator.

  1. The EOS lip balms!!! Oh my Gosh...I searched high and low here in Toronto when they first came out to find them and was soooo disappointed with them! Packaging was Uber cute, but I have very dry lips and they did nothing for me...at all!

  2. Crystal, I totally agree on the EOS lip balms. I searched for a long time too, and I hated the two I tried - I didn't like the smell, hated the packaging (so awkward!), and felt pretty neutral about the product itself.

I also don't like any of the lipstains I've tried. I'm not sure what was released when, but the NYC ones won a best of 2011 award, and I dislike them. I don't like them, though they are marginally better than the Revlon lipstains. I'm just not a lipstain person, I guess! They don't seem to coat my lips evenly.

  3. I would have to say Baby Lips. I found a great deal on them, so I picked up the Pink Punch. The color isn't very cute right after applying on my chapped lips, but looks better if I mash my lips together. The taste is ok. I think my lips have actually felt/looked worse after I started using it about two weeks ago. Oh well, just not for me! :/

  4. REVLON LIP BUTTERS! I bought one and wasn't impressed. I liked it, sure. But it wasn't anything to rave about.

  5. I have to agree with Crystal. The EOS lip balms were a huge disappointment for me. The only one I find sort of moisturizing is the Lemon Drop one, the rest are actually sort of drying. Super cute packaging though!

  6. Oh no I love my Lemon Drop EOS balm. The tangerine one is pretty gross flavor wise, but I found the lemon to be pretty moisturizing. I hate the Revlon Just bitten lip stain. Dries me out even with the balm and looks patchy.

  7. Revlon Lip Butters! I absolutely HATED them. They were way too oily and slippery; I felt like the color was going to slide off onto my face at any moment. So glad someone else hated them. I felt like the only one!

  8. WHAT??? EOS lip balms are great! I have one in my purse at all times and another next to my bed! I have been through like 4 already lol! (2 of which were casualties but oh well) I would have to say the Physician's Formula Happy Booster blushes. I have the shade rose which is nice, but its just a normal blush. Doesn't make me any happier than I normally am. ;-)

  9. Definitely the Sally Hansen Salon Effects Manicure stick-on polish. I bought a couple boxes of them at CVS when they were 75% off and was NOT impressed with the wear-time. The application was difficult, and the full price of $10 a box is outrageous. You can buy a whole bottle of quality, high-end nail polish for that price that you'd get many, many manicures out of.

  10. I'm going to agree about the lip butters. I wanted to like them but they're so drying to me. :(

  11. Agree with Revlon Lip Butters! I'm not alone! No one mentions this, but the product is not secure in the tube, so it gunks up on the back side of the housing when you apply. Drives me nuts!

Also, I hate to say it, but the L'Oréal Infallible 24-Hour Eye Shadow. I wanted to love these, but the colors aren't special and the lasting power is not good (and I don't use primer and I never experience fading).

In both cases, I come out the snob, much preferring the Chanel Coco Rouge Shines and Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill versions of these products.

  12. i second the lipstains. I have both the revlon and the maybelline ones and they are awful...

  13. I would say the Lip Butters, just 'cause I've heard so much about them and nothing has made me want to try them. The eos balms, it's a nice enough balm but the cute packaging means I almost never use it! Can't carry a big ball around in my pocket...

  14. Those Revlon balms (came out in the summer) that looked like MAC tendertones but had no color or moisturizing power... and Maybelline Fit Me foundation, that stuff is awful.

  15. Oh god, the sally hansen nail strips. They took FOREVER to apply and came off within 8 hours. They got caught on everything and literally peeled off. Hate.

  16. definitely the EOS lip balms! they are cool to have, neat idea, smell super nice, but i really felt like i was rubbing a plastic bubble on my lips. i'm one who loves to sit there and put tons of chapstick on, i love the feel of a thick moisturizing chapstick/balm and this felt like nothing on my lips, nor did it solve any chapped lip problems =/

also, the revlon MATTE lipsticks might have come out earlier than 2011, but they would be on my list of overhyped products! they are just too drying and make my lips look horribly creased/cracked!

  17. Cover girl nature luxe foundation. Sorry but it's made for pale people not women of (any) color.

  18. The Rimmel Clean Finish Foundation, the one that looks like watered down mousse in the bottle and for reasons unexplained has a spatula attached to the lid. Awful awful awful foundation.

  19. Revlon Lip Butters! I was so excited when I first saw them on display and dbl so as they were buy one get one 1/2 off, so I believed the hype and bought two - what a dissapointment! They dont go on too evenly, they have almost no lasting power, and their so soft + flat makes it hard to apply them in the shape of your lips. Their not the worst Ive used, but NOT worth the hype.

  20. i don't like those NYC eyeshadow palettes. i got one that was for green eyes and the shadows didn't show up at all. i think it's the worst eyeshadow palette i own.

and darn! i have that revlon foundation you're talking about. i got on on super clearance for like $2 and it still has the seal on it...wonder what i should do with it now...

  21. Bb creams:super sheer And hard get
Maybelline the falsies flared: it does a decent job on my lashes, but after wearing it for 5minutes it irritates my eyes
Hard candy: Glamoflauge Concealer-it is really thick and creases terribly under the eyes

  22. The lemon EOS balm is terrible, my sphere had some sort of grit on it. The sweet mint one, however was great.

Other than that, every crackle nail polish I bought was pretty awful.

  23. I'm going to agree with those who wrote the EOS lip balms. I came home from abroad and everyone was raving about them and bought some... MAJOR disappointment! The packaging is unique but after using the lip balm for a couple weeks, my lips have become drier...

  24. I agree with Christinah715 above... BabyLips was wayyyy too overhyped. Chapstick makes an SPF 20 formula too, I think. And the name creeps me out.

  25. Physician's Formula Happy Booster blush in Rose! When I opened mine, the packaging broke. Strike one. When I applied it, even though I used a VERY light hand, I looked like a clown. Strike two. The SMELL. It is horrible! It was so strong, and so overpowering, that it gave me a migraine. Which does not boost my happiness!

  26. I agree with those who feel the Revlon Lip Butters are not worth the investment. I still wonder what all the hype was about their release.......?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I didnt care for the Revlon Lip Butters also, but was afraid that I was the only one that wasn't impressed! Haha, anyway what I really didn't care for was all the crackle top coats that were the it things. I think that these became really popular in 2011.

  28. Nooo, I LOVED the L'Oréal Infallible 24-Hour Eye Shadows. I don't wear a primer either, and mine last all day without creasing and only slight fading...even through working out! And I actually have to use waterproof everything because eye makeup slides right off my lids. The colors aren't super special, but they're definitely wearable. And the lasting power is crazy for me. These are a HG for me.

Anita, my lemon EOS balm has some grit to it, too. It's kind of weird. But it sure tastes and smells good.

I think the most overhyped product of ALL TIME not just recently is Maybelline's Great Lash mascara. The formulation sucks. Even the new Lots of Lashes one sucks. I don't understand why beauty editors everywhere hype this up. It SUCKS. And I already have dark lashes.

  29. I never bought the eos balms because of what LizK said, I didn't want to carry a ball around in my pocket. I always thought the packaging was silly, and mentioned that to G about those Salma Hayek pod quads too.

I am surprised that so many don't like the lip butters though, since I think those are worth the hype and I've bought like 6 or 7 and ALL of them are in my purse. I love them so much I carry them around all the time.

I am bummed about the sparkle in the Revlon dna foundation since I had hoped to buy that one eventually. I have so much foundation now that it would be awhile. Maybe I should just save up and get my first high end foundation next. Anyway, you would think Revlon would have learned a lesson from the photoready foundation, I'm sure they've had a lot of complaints about the sparkle in that one. Why would they add sparkle to another foundation????

  30. For me, it was the Wet & Wild baked palettes. It took forever for them to arrive in my Walgreens, and when I finally got the brown one, I was not impressed. The colors are meh and I find the little domes of shadow to be very messy. Plus the packaging is super cheap.

  31. Crazy super-long product names! UGH! They were EVERWHERE in 2011!

  32. Hi G~
For me it would have to be the Revlon Lip Butters! I think the name was totally wrong given the fact these are really drying to most people, including myself.
Another would be the WnW 8 pan palletes. I just wasn't crazy for them. It was more about the hunt I suppose.:)

  33. Revlon Lip Butter. I hate them. They felt so greasy & left my lips so dry. I'll never understand the hype/craze over these. I notice they're in every store now. I think it's because no one is re-purchasing them!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Absolutely Revlon Lip Butters. I searched for these and got 5 of them before ever trying them out because they were so raved about. I cannot stand them and I never use them. They are nicely pigmented but if it's going to bill itself as a loo BUTTER then it needs to hydrate. These dry my lips out and are just not what I expected.

  35. I would have to say the Sally Hansen Nail Strips

    ReplyDelete
  36. The falsies mascara! I wear contacts and it flakes into my eyes causing irritation. But Im loving the new Revlon photoready mascara! Awesome!

  37. EOS lip balms in the pink/coral color (I forget what the flavor) and the Wet N Wild baked eyeshadows. I just loathed them and I regretted spending good money on them,

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm pretty sure this came out in 2011 but I could be wrong, either way my disappointment was Maybelline's One By One Mascara. I tried to like it but the brush tip on the applicator felt like the little silicone nubbs on scrublets (similar to the Loreal go 360 cleanser pop out brushes). The super flexy joint on the wand also made it difficult to press the brush head into my lashes. Long story short I felt like I was just pushing my lashes around to get any product to stay. Not one of the better products out there and definitely overhyped!
