I need your feedback (lurkers, please de-lurk!)

Dear longtime readers, new readers, occasional readers and lurkers,

I would absolutely love to receive your feedback today (please do not reply via Facebook and Twitter--I'd like to keep all comments in one handy location, i.e., this post).

I'm thinking about doing a new series on this blog where I'll review classic drugstore beauty products. When I say "classic" I mean those iconic drugstore products that always seem to make Top-10 Lists every year. Examples would be: Cetaphil cleanser, the original Maybelline Great Lash mascara, Elnett hairspray, etc.

The reason why I'm asking if you'd be interested in this series is simple: since these are time-honored products that millions of people already love, there are already thousands of reviews online for you to read. I'm not sure I can bring anything new to the table, other than my own, original opinion of each product.

So my question is this: would you like me to test and review some classic drugstore beauty products, or are you tired of hearing about them at this point?

Thank you in advance for your comments--I rarely ask for feedback like this, but since this would be a major project, I'd like to know from you if it's even worth beginning.

Love,
G. xo

  1. I think this sounds like a great, fun idea! I actually haven't seen a lot of blogger reviews on the "classic" products you mentioned.

  2. I would definitely be interested in a new series of blog posts that would review the "classic" drugstore beauty products. I don't think I'll ever get tired of hearing about the classic products. I would also look forward to reading people's comments on the product (ex: if it worked for them or not). I hope this is something you decide to do....if not, I'll keep reading as always :)

  3. I would love to hear about this. I actually did an internet search just this spring to see what the time-honored classics were. Upon this recommendation I bought Pond's cold cream and I have been happy with the results.

  4. I think this is a great idea! I'd definitely read it!

  5. I think this is a great idea. Its a great way to remind us about classic products and its always great to hear a review :)

    ReplyDelete
  6. i think it's a great idea- i like to read a lot of reviews on products (even if they're really inexpensive) to see if they're even worth it

    ReplyDelete
  7. I say yes, mainly because I can't stand some of those "mainstays" - debunk the myth!

  8. I think the 'regular' offerings have been reviewed to death. When I'm interested in a regularly offered/standard product I always go to Paula Begouin's site...plus magazines constantly 'review' them in order to pimp the companies buying the advertising space.

IMHO your niche is 'new and cheap' aka bargain/GOOD-BUY products. You do a wonderful job. Selfishly I wish you reviewed more products available in Canada but I understand that we're not your main audience.

    Just my thoughts

  9. This is a great series idea. I know I only hunt down reviews of oldies-but-goodies products when I'm actually thinking of buying it. But I think this new series will shed light on some oldies-but-goodies that might have fallen to the back shelf of our minds since we're so used to being bombarded with "the next best thing". oxoxo

    ReplyDelete
  10. i for one would love to see it :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. I usually get insecure about buying them because since they get reviewed a bunch, there is a ton of positive feedback but there is also a ton of negative too. So I get stuck and decide not to chance it after all.
But I'd love to hear your opinions on those products anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  12. That sounds awesome! I would absolutely love to hear your opinions on them, and I also think it would be a really good way of rediscovering some good classics (and reaffirming which ones to avoid!). Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think it would be a good idea. Alot of the time these "classics" get overlooked and forgotten, but I like many others know that these are sometimes the best choice.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Definetly! I always love to see your opnions because whenever you love something and I buy it I love it too. I don't think you have disapointed me once!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yes, please! I'm kinda new to makeup and skincare and I'd love to read about the classics!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think it would be a great idea and I would read it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. I would definitely love to such a series!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think it would be a great idea to review them. There may be some we have forgotten about and would like to try again. Also some of them have re vamped formulas and I'd like to know if they are the same as you remember or different!
    Peg~

  19. Sounds like a good idea to me. As others have mentioned, I don't actually see a lot of reviews of 'the classics'.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I also would love it if you reviewed the classics. I have tried some (Great Lash I am looking at you) that I can't understand the hype. I don't know if they get paid to put them on lists, maybe quality went down over the years, who knows.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes, please! You do have some younger readers (I refer the high schoolers that filter through my house to your blog!) and they may not be as aware as us, um...30-somethings. :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think it's a great idea since all your readers know you're a real person and will give us true reviews and not sugar coat the product review :) I'm all for it!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'd definitely be interested in reading this type of review. It would be a great opportunity to introduce some people (like those who are newer to the beauty scene) to these classics, and I agree with the commenter above who said that it would be helpful to read about other commenters' experiences with the products too.

Also, I imagine most of us come to your blog specifically because we like YOUR reviews and trust YOUR opinions on things. So being able to read a review from a trusted source, rather than some random blogs that we Googled but have never read before, would provide us with an extra sense of confidence when it comes to actually buying the products.

    ReplyDelete
  24. if you're up for it, i'd LOVE to see your reviews! they are always thorough and prove true when i decide to buy the product! :) keep up the amazing work! it's definitely appreciated!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Go for it! I would love to see reviews. You never know, they may have not worked for someone in the past but with improvements and age someone may be prompted to try again and find their HG.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I would love it as I like to see what you think of things. You're always honest and post great reviews. Please post classic reviews! :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Love the idea! I'd love to hear your opinions on classic products. You should add pond's cold cream to your list too.

So looking forward to this if you do do it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes I would love for you to do this!

    ReplyDelete
  29. That is a fabulous idea! You do wonderful reviews! Most of the reviews I see nowadays are of new items but there are a lot of "classic" products that I've never tried and would love to hear your opinion of them!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think it sounds like a great idea. Whenever I am getting ready to look for a new product, I check around to see what you have reviewed. I trust your opinion on what's good and what just sucks. Review whatever you want, I'll keep reading, even if I already read someone else's review, I still like to hear your thoughts.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I would like to see that.

There's never enough reviews on a product, and there's always a new light to shine on something.

I'd be interested in reading your reviews, it would be great if you could include sale stuff about these items - ie: how often they go on sale, how often there's a coupon floating around, etc..

    ReplyDelete
  32. I wouldn't mind. Each product performs differently per person, so it would be nice to see how a product performs for you.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I would do it. I follow about 50 or 60 different beauty blogs on bloglovin so I do see a lot of repeat reviews of certain products, this doesn't bother me though. For the reader who doesn't follow a lot of makeup blogs but does like yours, they could benefit from the classic reviews and it would probably be brand new to them. I wouldn't mind seeing classic reviews either because it could jog my memory of a product that has long since been forgotten because of all the shiny new products I've been bombarded with over the years. So that's a big go for it from me.:)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I wouldn't mind seeing your reviews! However, I do love your blog for limited edition findings, deals, and new makeup sightings, so please keep those coming as well!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I would like to see you review classic products. It would be cool to see if their formulas have changed over the years and if they're more affordably priced compared to the newer more hyped stuff all the better! Thanks for the great work here.

    ReplyDelete
  36. i think that's a great idea, after all, classics have always paved way to what we have these days.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm not really interested in reading info about old products. I like this site because you have new info, particularly about Wet n Wild products. As with any blog, though, if you post article about classics, and I'm not interested in them, I'll just skip those posts. No big deal.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I love seeing your take on drugstore products and would love to see reviews of products everyone uses and assumes are great, but might not actually be so amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yes please! It's always nice to go back to the basics... I forget about those products while on the endless quest for the fountain of youth!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I would love to see this! Different things work differently for people. Also, some of those cult faves are overhyped in some people's eyes. I would love to see your view on them =]

    ReplyDelete
  41. I would enjoy this! Even if they're products that most people know about, there will always be people who are just getting into makeup, or simply aren't dedicated enough to know about everything.

    ReplyDelete
  42. If it would be something you would be interested and enjoy I'd definitely love to see it just like I love everything else you post! I know they get reviewed all the time but I really trust your opinion so I would love to see your take on them! Plus a lot of times when I see reviews for these products, its magazines that aren't being 100% truthful and don't seem trustworthy.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think it's always nice to add to your posts something that's different. While I do love that you post about new and up and coming things, I appreciate posts about iconic products. It's always good to have another opinion!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm a lurker delurking, I think this would make a great blog post. I do have to say one thing.....elnett hair spray smells like an old man. Old men's cologne. Lol I hate my trial sized of the spray!

    ReplyDelete
  45. sounds like a great idea! Some people aren't aware of classics because there is always something new and shiny out there. Plus, when you blog about a classic item, others can share their experiences with the same product!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think it would be great if you did! I love to look a variety of reviews before I decide to buy my makeup products, each review is different :] It would also help newbies like me for ex, to get to know more of these products!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think you should REALLY do this project! Probably a lot of people will benefit from this so they can see themselves if these products live up to their name:)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Love your blog! Yes, I would enjoy reading reviews on the classics. Are they classics because of performance or have they simply outlived the competition, LOL?!

    ReplyDelete
  49. De-lurking...I would find such posts helpful because I may not have necessarily come across a post about a particular item on another site. Often I don't even think about products unless I see them or someone posts about them. I vote yes!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm interested! Sure, there are a lot of other reviews out there, but I'd rather her YOUR reviews! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  51. De-lurking...I vote yes! I rarely think about products unless I see them on a shelf or read a post and I do enjoy your reviews.

    ReplyDelete
  52. YES PLEASE!!! This is a great idea! I would love to know your opinions on these classics as I have actually never actually used a lot of them and even though they are "tried-and-true" I am still kind of reluctant without hearing from a more reliable source (like you). I would love to know what you think about Cetaphil because I just ran out of my trial size Shiseido cleanser and don't want to break the bank. Also, my first tube of mascara was Maybelline Great Lash but I didn't like it, probably because I didn't really know how to use mascara properly as a teen, and would like to re-visit it. Sorry for the long comment but I love reading your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm going to go against the grain here and say yes, unless it takes away from your normal new beauty coverage. I love this blog because I know you always have the newest stuff first. A lot of the classics are things I can try any time. I trust your word on the new stuff so I know if I need to scramble to find t while it is limited.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I would love you to test them. I trust your opinion way more than magazine editors and appreciate your honest reviews.

A few more recs maybe: Revlon Colorstay foundation, Covergirl super thick lash, WnW #666 lip liner, and queen helene mint julep mask. (If you haven't already reviewed these.)

    ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  55. I'd like to see it. Everybody has something different to say about everything, and I'd love to know what you'd have to say :D

    ReplyDelete
  56. Contrary to popular opinion, I agree with torontomagnet. Though I do value your opinion on drugstore products, there are many other sources that can vouch for the quality of classic products. A review by you would still be appreciated, but overall, I think it would only provide marginal insight.

I come to your blog to learn about new, not old, products. (By the way, I appreciate how awesome and quick your reviews have been!) I think your time would be best spent on the nouveau :) /delurk

    ReplyDelete
  57. i enjoy reviews on "classics" because try as i might i have found some of them never have worked for me, and that's always good to see if someone else has had more success/have tricks to making it work

    ReplyDelete
  58. Sounds interesting!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I would like to read reviews of classic products. It's nice to revisit or be reminded of an old favorite, and I would like hearing your take on them. I would like having the reviews from you, since I feel I can trust them more, and know more what your skin, hair, etc type is.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I vote: Yes!
I appreciate your posts and respect your opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hmm I think it is a great idea! I also think a best of that year review would be good too like whatever you liked during the entire year, old or new but do it like just around the holiday time so it is more end of year and various holiday stuff would already be out as well so you can include them if they make the cut, if that makes sense lol Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Please do! I'm always curious about those "classics" . . . I've never been a fan of the pink tube Maybelline (I think?) that everyone always raves about . . .

    ReplyDelete
  63. Yes! I would look to hear your thoughts on the "classic" drugstore products!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I would love to hear a more up to date review on all the classic beauty products! I can guarantee i'll still be here reading all your reviews on these products! Do your thang girl!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Yes! Yes! And yes! I would love to hear your thoughts. I've tried a lot of the classics, probably all of them. And when they don't become staples in my makeup bag ... I have to wonder if there's something that I'm not getting. Maybe I'll do some of my own response reviews, too. This is a great idea! XO

    ReplyDelete
  66. yes, i would love for you to do reviews on those classic drugstore items =)

    ReplyDelete
  67. I personally have heard enough about the classics/mainstays. But then I am nearly 40, so I've been around longer than some of the others that have commented. I've used them all & have already formed my opinions on those products. What I enjoy about your blog is that you help us discover new & wonderful (or sometimes help us stay away from the not-so-wonderful) products. I can always read MUA's reviews for the classics (which, in some cases, have thousands of reviews already). - Anna

    ReplyDelete
  68. This sounds like a great idea for a new series!!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm always looking for great products that are affordable- a lot of these classic products have a following for a reason, and I'd love your unbiased opinions on the. :)

    ReplyDelete
  70. yes, i think you should review them.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I would like to hear your take on the classics. :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. Yes, I'd like to see those review. I'd rather read any review on products easily accessible than something that costs like my whole monthly paycheck!
It wouold be great if you could post the ingredients too, when it' about skincare!
I really love your blog :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. Please do, I need to know if I am the only one who loathes Maybelline Great Lash with a passion.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I would like to hear your take on the classics. It would be even better though if you reviewed them alongside their more expensive dupes or something comparable to what they are so that you can show how it truly is better (or worse) and how you can get more bang for your buck.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I'd like to hear your take on those classic products, but to be honest I'd rather that you focus on the products that don't get talked about much. I'm more interested in the underrated stuff :)

    ReplyDelete
  76. YES Definitely! I'd love to read your 2cents on the most adored drugstore products.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Another lurker, delurking, I am personally not interested but it's a good idea. I like to read blogs for the new items.

    Great blog!

    ReplyDelete
  78. If it's not too much trouble for you, and if it's something that you are into, yes I would love to read reviews on classic drugstore beauty products. We all get caught up in the new products; maybe looking at some classics will help us rediscover something that we loved at one time.
    Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Yes, definitely! I love your reviews and writing style, so I'd really like to see your take on classic products!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Yes Please. I would also like to see a yearly survey of favorites: eye liner, mascara, foundation... with the results posted, your picks and the top three survey picks.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I personally would not be interested in hearing about old products. I agree with others who have said that there are plenty of other resources where I can read reviews about these products. However, I wouldn't mind if you chose to do such a series, as long as it doesn't take time away from you keeping us updated on the current sales and newer products. I will simply choose not to read those posts if I don't want to, just like with any blog.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Yes I would love to hear your view on these products!

    ReplyDelete
  83. It's good to have another opinion on these...and revisit. :) Go for it!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Yes, do post! I trust your reviews, which are always comprehensive, practical, and very useful!

    ReplyDelete
  85. I think that would be awesome. I haven't read any proper reviews about some of those mainstays, just a "yay" or "nay" in passing. :)

    ReplyDelete
  86. With formulas always changing I think it would be a goo idea. Sometimes we forget the classics, with all the new stuff coming out.

    ReplyDelete
  87. YES! I say put them to the test. I often find the "classics" do not work well for me unlike all the glowing reviews out there. Would love to know your thoughts!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Sounds like a fantastic idea. Go for it!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Sounds like a great idea and I would be interested in reading it : )

    ReplyDelete
  90. I'd love for you to post about them! Yes, we've read about them numerous times, but I want some "real" feedback. You are always honest in your posts, which I respect tremendously, speaking as a consumer and a blogger!

    ReplyDelete
  91. It's a great idea! Even though these get reviewed a lot, I value YOUR honest perspective. Perhaps another twist: what newer/newish products remind you of the classics? Not to make extra work for you - but as you're reviewing them, what comes to mind? I, too, don't get the Great Lash hype (didn't work when I was 15, still doesn't at 41), but if there's a newer mascara out there that's Great Lash-esque, i'd love to know so I don't buy it. Conversely, I love Dove soap, so what's new out there a la Dove that I can play with? Thanks for such a wonderful blog and for treating your readers with respect & intelligence with balanced reviews and keeping it positive. Steph (finally de-lurking)

    ReplyDelete
  92. I would be interested in this. I'd like to know if these are classics because they were the best at what they did *at the time*, and if they are *still* the best at what they do. Or, perhaps, are they the best at what they do *at that particular pricepoint*.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Go for it! I'd be interested in reading real reviews over something printed in a magazine that's biased towards their sponsors. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  94. Absolutely, yes! I value your opinion above all others where drugstore is concerned. And a lot of these products are classics are favorites for a reason! Who knows, I might have missed something!

    ReplyDelete
  95. I pretty much read everything you post so I'd love this kind of review. And I was wondering, could you post images of older versions of various make up? For example, I find WnW in Big Lots occasionally but it looks NOTHING like what I see in the stores now. How old *is* it and how can I tell? Please keep posting, you are so informative and helpful!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  96. I think this is a good idea and I would definitely use it. I want to see your views on these classics and what is a better place than all the reviews for classics in one place. I don't have to hunt for them when I need it anymore :)

    ReplyDelete
  97. I say TEST EM and TELL US all about them! It never gets old...

    ReplyDelete
  98. I'm new here (just found you today actually!), and I would love some reviews of classic products. My favorite classics are Revlon nailpolish "Revlon Red", Rosebud Salve, and Covergirl pressed powder. It would be great to get some new ideas! Loving the blog so far.

    ReplyDelete
  99. At first I was against this idea, thinking that I've heard so much about these classics.

But reading the other comments changed my mind. I think reading about the classics, in an updated way, and perhaps, comparing them against the 'newbies', would be interesting.

And, to echo the others, I come here to read your take, G, because your voice and opinion resonates with me :)

    ReplyDelete
  100. I would think reviews of classic products would be a good idea.
Often I go to the drugstore and tend to overlook the products that have been out a bit longer since I think newer technology might produce better products. Except for Great Lash mascara I would really be interested in looking at the quality of more classic products.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I'd enjoy this -- there are some classic winners that were real duds for me -- and of course, some that are great. I'd love to hear your take on them!

    ReplyDelete
  102. De-lurking to say yes, please do! What a great idea!

    ReplyDelete
  103. There's always room for one more opinion because everybody has a different reaction to products- some subtly, some not so.

    ReplyDelete
  104. At first I kind of liked the idea, but once you mentioned that there are already millions of reviews for those products out there I realized that I think it makes more sense for you to put your time (and money) into reviewing newer products, or products that are less well-known. That's a big part of why I read your blog.

So I would rather you didn't do that series. Not because your reviews wouldn't be worth reading, but simply because there are already so many reviews for that stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I think your blog is awesome and your reviews are great! I don't think it would HURT anything, of course, but personally i like reading reviews of the NEWEST stuff, and you always have them! But, whatever floats your boat :D and it sounds like everyone else wants it! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  106. I personally love your style of reviewing and I think it would be handy to have a lot of the classic beauty products reviewed all on one blog. I am positive that I have not heard of the majority of them yet! lol

    ReplyDelete
  107. Yes, of course! These are 'iconic' products for a reason. I say, share why they have achieved this status. And, refresh my memory!

    ReplyDelete
  108. I like your reviews, but I think the classic stuff is kind of done to death...I much prefer columns on dupes or new collections, even if it's something not available in Canada. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  109. I'd love it if you did this because I rarely see independent bloggers cover these 'classic' products; usually I see them as part of a magazine article or something, and there might be bias or a lack of thoughtful explanation on how the product feels and works.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I'm really into this idea for one main reason: the classic, iconic products need fresh new reviews because they have new competition. Great Lash might have been the most awesome mascara ever when it came out...but how does it compare to the products of today? I think it would be a great idea for you to do this because you are so well versed in today's drugstore beauty products. :D

    ReplyDelete
  111. I think this is a great idea because I don't have many of the products in my collection and if I do, I'm not getting good use out of it.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Absolutely! With so many products coming out all the time I would love to see how the old classics are holding up!

    ReplyDelete
  113. Honestly, I would like to see you review them because the reason I come to your blog is because we have similar coloring, skin type, and hair type. Would probably end up saving me money ;)

    ReplyDelete
  114. Hi G!
Yes please review them! I'm relatively new to cosmetics and with all the new things coming out, a lot of times I'm very uncertain about the products. I'll love to hear more about the "oldies but goodies"!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Hmm...sounds like a huge project undertaking and for that reason, I don't think you should do it--especially if it takes time away from the amazing posts I already look forward to. If I had to choose between the two, I would say, "No thanks."

However, if you do choose to do it, I would read each and every post. It would be interesting to hear your take.

    ReplyDelete
  116. yes, this would be awesome! i love your blog & visit it every day! i know of so many new products.. but dont really know about classics. never even tried the cetaphil cleaner out... :)

    ReplyDelete
  117. WOW WOW WOW! I honestly do not how to thank you all for this AMAZING feedback! First of all, I have read all of your comments (of course!) and am so grateful to each and every one of you for leaving your honest, thoughtful opinions on this post (and for all the kind words! Wow!!).

It sounds like the overwhelming opinion is that you'd like to see me do this series, so I'm definitely going ahead with it!

And to those of you who are NOT interested in seeing this series, I thank you for your honest feedback. I hope that you won't be annoyed when you see these review pop up (as you said, you can just skip them) and I also want to let you know that they will not interfere with my normal reviews. I'm only planning on doing one or two a month at this point. :)

Thanks again and a huge virtual hug to each and every one of you for taking the time to respond to my question.

    G. xo
