Review: New CoverGirl Lip Perfection Lipsticks in Burn and Rush

Today I'm bringing you part three of my coverage of the new 2011 CoverGirl products that I received for review (click here for my review of Natureluxe foundation and here for my review of Natureluxe Gloss Balms).

So far I've been extremely impressed with CoverGirl's latest offerings--read on to see if I'm equally impressed with their newest lipstick line:

 CoverGirl Lip Perfection Lipstick
(retail: around $7, 0.12 oz)

I received two shades for review. Rush is a medium nude creme that seems, to my eye, not too warm and not too cool. Burn is a warm reddish-rust-copper shade that I would classify as a shimmery metallic. It's quite shimmery on the lips--much more so than my photos lead you to believe.

 Left: Rush, Right: Burn

According to the CoverGirl website, Lip Perfection Lipsticks have:

Bright, gorgeous color that can transform your day and your lips. Enriched with Silk Therapy Complex, our formula helps sustain moisture levels and helps create soft, smooth, beautiful lips in just 7 days.*

* vs. bare lips

After using both of these shades for over two weeks now, I can confirm that both Rush and Burn definitely deliver on "bright, gorgeous color". These are one-swipe lip colors, gals. Seriously, the pigmentation is pretty incredible, even for a nude like Rush

As for the texture, these lipsticks are C.R.E.A.M.Y.!  This is the type of lipstick that requires little to no pressure when you apply it. It's as if it just glides across the lips on its own, it's so smooth and light. I never thought I'd say this but the texture, combined with the pigmentation, forces me to knock my beloved Maybelline Color Sensational out of its number one spot for my favorite drugstore lipstick. Don't get me wrong, I still love my Color Sensational, but I find that Lip Perfection lipsticks are even smoother and have better pigmentation.

I also believe that these may be more moisturizing than my beloved Color Sensational. My lips have been severely chapped lately and when I put on Lip Perfection, it seems to kind of soothe the dryness and make the yucky areas of my lips less noticeable:

In the above swatches, I think it's difficult to tell exactly how chapped my lips are (they're pretty chapped!). Who doesn't love a lipstick that is moisturizing enough to make dry lips look less dry, right?

The fragrance of Lip Perfection lipsticks is vanilla-based (as well as the flavor), and they kind of remind me of MAC lipsticks. Neither the flavor nor fragrance are overpowering and they both seem to fade pretty quickly after application.

I love the way Burn looks against my skin, but I think it would be too warm for you cool-toned ladies. Rush is my favorite of the two, because I adore nude lip colors that still provide me with a bit of color. I cannot pull off nudes that are truly nude (i.e., the ones that look like concealer on the lips). I need a nude that has a punch of color to it, and Rush definitely fits the bill. It's a colorful nude (what an oxymoron that is) that doesn't veer into full-on brown, yet it's not so light that it looks like concealer. In fact, it totally reminds me of one of my Bobbi Brown lipsticks--I'll have to dig those out and do a dupe comparison post in the future.

Let's talk about staying-power. Now don't get me wrong: I knew going into this that creamy lipsticks aren't generally known for their stellar staying-power. You all know that I'm a chronic gloss-eater and I can't just let a lip product sit on my lips untouched. I'm constantly smooshing my lips together and breaking down that lovely color. That said, I can get about two hours of wear from Lip Perfection. If you are a model student who never touches or smooshes your lips together after applying lip color, then I hate you. Just kidding! I  actually admire you for your discipline, and I'm pretty sure you could squeeze at least another hour of wear from this lipstick.

FINAL VERDICT: In my opinion, CoverGirl Lip Perfection Lipsticks are pretty fantastic. The pigmentation is outrageous, the texture is creamy as creamy can be, and they provide some much-needed moisturization to my poor, wintertime chapped lips. I love the pigmentation and texture so much that I find myself reaching for these over my beloved Color Sensational lipsticks, and I think that says a lot. Just know going into this that you're not going to get knock-your-socks-off staying power, because you never do with a lipstick this creamy. But what Lip Perfection lacks in staying power, it makes up for in color payoff and texture. When you see these on sale (and maybe have a coupon or two) I say pick one up and try it for yourself. I hope your experience is as wonderful as mine.

Have you already tried a Lip Perfection lipstick? If so, what do you think of them? If you haven't already tried one, are you thinking about giving them a whirl? Either way, I'd love to hear from you!

  1. I have bought two of them so far (can't recall the colors) and I'm extremely impressed. Between the packaging, the color payoff, the pigmentation and the range of colors offered, these are my new favorite. I will definitely be buying more colors!

  2. I really like the quality of these lipsticks, but I just can't find a good color and the maybelline color sensational color I loved was discontinued. I need a new favorite drugstore lipstick now.

  3. Unlike you, I'm a gloss girl. I don't know why, but no matter how I apply it, or what products I use to seal it, it gets on my teeth. Always. But at the CVS Sale, I picked up a bunch of Physicians Formula plumping lipsticks for swaps and decided to try one and LOVED IT (it was the lightest color)! So when I saw these gorgeous Lip Perfections Color and saw that they are a lip color and liner in one, I went for a deep almost color changing wine, and a bright pink. I was paranoid and kept checking my teeth for hours, but these things don't budge! They fade over time, but they don't migrate to my teeth, or feather in any way and the colors are almost unreal! That was last week and I now own 7 of them! And I will get more as I can afford them! Best drugstore lipstick I've ever used by a mile!

  4. I have two of these, one in Kiss (a peachier color, perfect for spring/summer) & the other in Hypnotic(a bronzy peachy pink hybrid). I am super impressed by the smoothness & staying power of these. I think they are much better than a lot of the current drugstore lipstick offerings. The only thing, I find a bit annoying is the metallic shimmer that they take on. I am not sure if all the shades are like that but if I had to take off points,it would be for that.

  5. Amazing, G!!! Both of these shades are absolutely STUNNING on you and I'd never guess that your lips are chapped!

Also, the finish looks really lush - creme without being either shiny or matte at the same time... a good word escapes me to describe it - LOL!

I hate to say this (because I already own approx 1,612,452 lipsticks and glosses), but I do believe I may have to seek these out and try one or two shades for myself! ;-D

Thanks so much for a thorough review and great photos of the product - as always!!!

  6. Do you find that the color changes after a while? I was loving these lippies too, but my favorite shade, SULTRY goes on as a perfect pale, pinky nude. In a matter of 15-20 minutes however, it transformed into an almost brown red. I don't know how this happened, but it's happened a couple of times for me.

I wore it alone and I'm just wishing it would stay the color it applied as!

  7. I own two of these in Darling and Fervor, and they're AMAZING. I'm not really a lipstick girl, but I recently started a new job and wanted something that would last a bit longer on my lips than a gloss. These are perfect because they're so creamy and not drying at all! I plan on picking up a new shade soon, and Rush is calling my name.....

  8. Wow G. You have me very interested in these. Normally I am not a Cover Girl girl, but with a sale and a coupon I will totally try one! P.s. my sister can wear her lipstick for hours perfectly and even eat a meal without it budging!!!! Amazing!!!

  9. Love your blog! I read it every once in a while to de-stress. Since you've been mentioning your lips are chapped, I'd like to recommend you a lip balm that's kept my lips moisturized for days AND healed the dry cuts on the corner of my mouth overnight:
    http://www.natio.com.au/moisturising-lip-balm-spf-30.html

    But I purchased it here:
    http://www.sasa.com/SasaWeb/eng/product/viewProductDetail.jspa?itemno=101825802001

I was using Aveeno's Lip Conditioner but every few days or so my lips would be chapped again. Natio kept my lips soft and moisturized since I started using it. Hope this will help! =]

  10. Wow. I'll have to check them out. I would NEVER have guessed your lips were chapped! I don't normally care for CG, especially the lip stuff, but I've heard good things about the Natureluxe line so looks like they're worth a try :)

  11. Amy: So glad to hear your experience was very similar to mine!

PCS: Argh! I hate it when that happens. I'm sorry you can't find a good color match. :( Maybe the new Prestige lippies might have something you like!

Sheryl: WOW! That is so great to hear! I'm thrilled that these are working so well for you. Yay!

rhinovirus: Hum...well the creme I reviewed in this post (Rush) definitely does NOT have the metallic shimmer, so I'd try one with a creme finish next and see how that goes! :)

Ruthie: Girl, you are too kind! :) And yes, you used the PERFECT word to describe these--they ARE lush! I really hope you love them as much as I do. Keep me posted? ;)

DrugstoreFinds: Oh my goodness, no, I haven't experienced that! I'm sorry to hear that happened to you. I wonder if it's just that particular color? Could you exchange it for another and see how that goes? Please keep me posted!

M: So glad to hear you love these too! And yes, Rush is such a versatile shade--you need it. LOL! ;)

robin: I think these might pleasantly surprise you, honey. Give them a whirl and let me know how it goes! And PS: Tell you sister I'm jealous!

Sephiria: Thanks for the rec! I will definitely give that a look! :)

Steffy: Honestly, I think these will surprise you. Give one a shot and let me know how it goes? I'd love to hear what you think! :)

  12. I must be of the minority because I bought two of these lipsticks and they both taste terrible. They smell okay but have a weird chemical taste. I can't stand to wear them.

  13. I bought one of these and like it a lot -- the formula is so light and smooth! However, I like Maybelline's color range just a tiny bit better. Looks like I need both in my life!

  14. I love your blog!!! Nice :) I have 3 of the CG Lip Perfection Lipstick colors: Burn, Soulmate and Fervor. I love Burn the most, against my fair yellow-undertone skin----and while I adore the allure of a sophisticated nude, they tend to wash me out :( But after seeing Rush on you, I'm rushing (pun intended) to get Rush today at walmart. Love the forumlation so much; it is unbelievably (more so) superior to many expensive brands, such as: laura mercier, bobbi brown, estee lauder, et al.

  15. Think I might try one of these :) I don't really need any more lip products but your swatches are gorgeous AND they are 30% off at priceline at the moment, that's a good enough excuse, right?

  16. I've been looking for a good melon shade for awhile now, so when I saw Fairytale at CVS today and remembered the 50% off sticker, I grabbed it. It was only $3.50! I love it, and so far it hasn't disappointed me- I may go tomorrow for a backup when I get a chance =)
