Matte lipsticks probably spark more intense emotions than any other type of lip product I've blogged about in the past four years. Either you really love mattes or you really despise them. There simply is no middle ground.
It's no secret that I'm in the "love" camp for matte lipsticks. Since I'm about the same age as Tori Spelling, Jennie Garth and Shannon Doherty, I rocked what I like to call "Matte 1.0" lipsticks in the early 90s, right along with the gals on (the original) Beverly Hills, 90210.
And like I've said a zillion times, Matte 1.0 lipsticks are NOTHING like Matte 2.0 lipsticks. Modern day matte lippies have come a looooong way, so when I saw the new Rimmel Kate Moss matte lipstick collection at CVS recently, I plopped one into my basket quicker than you can say "I still love Dylan McKay."
Rimmel Kate Moss Lasting Finish Matte Lipstick in #104
(retail: around $5, 0.14 oz)
Keep reading for my full review...
According to the Rimmel website, there are ten shades in this range (I don't think my CVS had all 10 shades in the permanent Rimmel display, which is where I found these).
From Rimmel:
Sumptuously Rich Matte Colour with a sublime comfort.
Ruby Powder enriched formula.
Intense velvet colour all day!
Shade #104 is very true-to-tube. It is EXACTLY what I was hoping for when I swatched it:
This lipstick has great, one-swipe pigmentation. Here it is on my lips:
(I don't care who you are; matte lipsticks never look good in extreme close-up. But I assure you, from a regular viewing distance, this color looks smooth on my lips and doesn't accentuate every little line you see above)
Texture and finish: This lipstick obviously has a matte finish, but the texture is unlike any other matte lipstick I've tried before. There's a slickness to this that keeps it from being one of those "I think I just swiped tar on my lips" matte lipsticks from yesteryear. When I squish my lips together, there's absolutely NO resistance. The same goes for application--this lipstick glides across the lips so easily and smoothly that you'll be convinced you accidentally applied a glossy lipstick instead of a matte. This is NOT a heavy matte lipstick. It's incredibly light on the lips and in no way feels suffocating (the signature characteristic of Matte 1.0 lipsticks).
Pigmentation: Like I mentioned above, shade #104 provides one-swipe color. There's absolutely no need to go back and forth over the lips for additional color.
Staying power: Absolutely impressive in every respect. I can get a minimum of four hours of wear from shade #104, and I've even gotten six hours of wear when I didn't eat a full-on meal while wearing this color. I can drink coffee, water, and even have a light snack of crackers or something like that and this lipstick stays put like a champ. I'm one of those people who plays with their lips lot (biting, licking and smooshing my lip together) and it even survives that type of abuse. Also, this lipstick fades evenly--no ring-around-the-lips. Oh! One more thing: Matte 1.0 lipsticks had a tendency to ball up a bit after a few hours on the lips. I have experienced no balling up at all with this product.
Hydration: Let's not beat around the bush. Matte lipsticks are known for being drying. But is this matte lipstick as drying as others I own? Absolutely not. In fact, I would say that it isn't drying at all to my lips, but you must keep in mind that I've been wearing matte lipsticks for over 20 years, so what I consider non-drying may be different from what you consider non-drying. I don't think it adds hydration to my lips, but it certainly doesn't leave my lips feeling parched.
Fragrance and flavor: This lipstick does not smell or taste like the regular Kate Moss lipsticks, which are kind of "perfumey." To my nose, this lipstick has a soft berry-floral fragrance, and the flavor is sort of berry-floral as well. I find both the fragrance and flavor quite pleasant.
FINAL VERDICT: This lipstick is an absolute LOVE MATCH for me. I love everything about it, from the gorgeous, versatile pinky-brown color to the finish to the staying power to the lack of dryness. If you're used to heavy, drying matte lipsticks that make you run for the hills after just a few minutes of wear, I think you're going to be quite pleasantly surprised by the new Rimmel Kate Moss Lasting Finish Matte Lipsticks. They feel beautifully light on the lips and, for this matte lipstick veteran, not drying at all. The color of #104 is one of those versatile works-for-everyone shades with excellent pigmentation If you love matte lipsticks, I think you're going to love these. I give this one my highest recommendation (and I don't do that too often).
Have you tried any of the new Rimmel Kate Moss Lasting Finish Matte Lipsticks yet? I'd love to hear if you agree with me about these!
This is my new favorite lipstick!!! So glad you love it as well!
ReplyDeleteG, that color looks GORGEOUS on you! makes me wanna get up and drive straight to CVS and find it!
ReplyDeleteI have never been a fan of matte lipsticks or eyeshadows when I saw them in the store and on other people, but last week my cousin gifted a Revlon lipstick to me (i think the shade is Pink Storm). I tried it on, and it turns out that I actually love it!
ReplyDeleteOh I cannot wait to get my hands on this!
ReplyDeleteI have this one and four others. But 110 keeps eluding me...! (If these are permanent, then maybe I'll find them at a CVS when I go to Atlanta this summer?)

ReplyDeleteThey ARE permanent! :D I've seen them in the permanent displays around here.
DeleteI have 104 and 107. I've been in love with both for at least 3 weeks. Your review was spot on.
ReplyDeleteYou know I love these! Original line & matte! Impeccable!
ReplyDeleteI've loved my mattes since the 1.0 days! I can't wait to find these--they sound perfect!
ReplyDeleteI really hope I can find this shade, the ones I have found I haven't been excited about but this I have to get. I blame my 90s teenage years on my love of matte. I so badly wanted to raid Drew Barrymores lipstick stash.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adore matte lipsticks and I loved the previous Kate Moss line so I am beyond excited about these!
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I've heard nothing but terrible reviews of it so I kept passing it even though I actually LOVE the look of matte lipsticks. You convinced me. I'm checking one out. Thanks!
ReplyDeletei love matte
ReplyDeleteI have all of the original and matte lipsticks by Rimmel by Kate and love them ALL. Rimmel really knocked it out of the park with this line.
ReplyDeleteI have 103 and 105 I think. love them both, definitely a step up from the mattes of my youth ( 90210 also!) which is saying a lot as I usually dislike mattes!
ReplyDeleteI want to try these. Hard part is deciding which colors to buy!
ReplyDeleteI have 110 and 109. 110 is a bright coral-red and 109, which apparently isn't in wide distribution in the states, is a muted coral-orange. I liked the fragrance at first, but it quickly became overwhelming, as well as the unpleasant taste. Good news though! I've had these for a few weeks now and the smell and taste have almost completely dissipated. Maybe now I can finally wear them. XD
ReplyDeleteI bought this today because of your review. First impression: I love the scent!! Testing out the staying power now :)
ReplyDeletei have 107. i like the color. i wouldn't have bought it if i'd known it was supposed to be matte. i put gloss over it and i get lots of complements. ...which confirms my belief that matte, flat color on your lips is unflattering (ie, the closeup shot above is the truth, lol, sorry!) i like 107 with gloss over it which adds dimension and blurs all those lines you see above, lol. and to me, the smell is a cheap, strong, fake-fruity scent. color is still pretty, price is still around $5.50, so i try to ignore/tolerate the smell, or top it with much nicer smelling/tasting lipgloss.
ReplyDeleteI picked this up a few weeks ago as well and i have to say the smell is truly nauseating for me and i'm not normally sensitive to smells at all :( i'll still use but the smell makes me sick when i put it on
ReplyDeleteThis line got me hooked on Rimmel!
ReplyDeleteI love Dylan McKay LMAO!!! I LOVE the 90s matte lip, and Shannen Doherty. Definitely going to get some of these for myself and my kit!
ReplyDeleteOooh I'm a definate matte lip lover. I really want to get some of these but I already have so many lipsticks I can't justify buying more!
ReplyDeleteI love the color of 104! Smell goes away fast and the color stays around.. not too dark and not bright ..just perfect. Thanks for pointing me to these..my local CVS had a nice display ready for my $!
ReplyDeleteLooks like this could be a great MLBB shade for me, I'm going to stalk it down!
ReplyDeleteI fondly remember the days of matte 1.0! I'm really liking these, in fact I think the colours available are prettier than the 'regular' Kate/Rimmel range.
ReplyDeleteI think this shade is similar to shade 08 of the Rimmel Kate Moss ver 1 lipstick line
ReplyDeleteAlso a huge fan of this Rimmel line! Havent tried 104, but am currently head over heels in love with 107. Also wrote a review on it - my new favorite lipstick (possibly ever!!)
ReplyDeleteI went hunting for one of these lipsticks to try a matte months after reading your original review. I wasn't sure about mattes and wanted to try one for myself. I'm amazed that you love this lipstick as much as I do. Not because of the color of #104, but because it looks nice on both you and on me. If I had similar coloring to you, it'd be no surprise, but I'm a brown skinned Latina, so I think it's pretty awesome that this lipstick is so flattering on such a different range of skin tones. Definitely a winner in my book!
ReplyDeleteAlso, if you are a fellow brown girl, be sure to check out Total Makeup Junkie 101 on Youtube. Her swatches are so helpful in a blogosphere with few WOC. It was because of her that I bought this nude. I remember seeing her wearing Milani Teddy Bare in a review video, so when I couldn't decide on a Rimmel color, I chose 104 because it was the closest one to Teddy Bare.
Great review! I have two tubes incase it is discontinued. Love this shade. The texture is creamy and smooth. Pigmentation is awesome. Looks brilliant on my NC44 skin.
ReplyDelete104 is my absolute fav shade!!!! thanks
ReplyDeleteI have 107 and I'm absolutely obsessed! So glad to see good reviews on this amazing lipstick!!
