I mentioned the other day that I was lucky enough to find a full display of the new Maybelline Limited Edition Fall 2012 Fashion Week Color Tattoos at Rite Aid (where they just so happen to be BOGO1/2OFF this week) so I purchased all four shades. I wanted to show you some swatches and also some comparisons to other shadows in my collection, so that you can get a better idea of these colors and whether or not they might be worth the hunt. So let's get started:
Maybelline Limited Edition Fall 2012 Fashion Week Color Tattoo Eyeshadows
(retail: $6.69 each at Rite Aid, 0.14 oz)
Barely Beige
Barely Beige is a true light beige with a shimmery finish.
Gold Shimmer
Gold Shimmer is a bronzy-brownish-gold with a shimmery finish that borders on metallic.
Mossy Green
Mossy Green is a deep olive green with gold shimmer.
Rich Mahogany
Rich Mahogany is a dark, coffee brown with red shimmer.
Barely Beige and Gold Shimmer
Barely Beige and Gold Shimmer are my two favorites of the four. Quality-wise, I think these perform better than Mossy Green and Rich Mahogany because they're creamier, smoother and more true to the colors you see in the pot when applied to the eyes. Each of these shades is buildable, but provide excellent pigmentation on the first swipe. Neither of these shades is spotty, dry or difficult to apply. You can use just your fingers for a great opacity and they're easy to blend. Also, you could wear either of these shades alone (without applying any powder shadows on top of them) and they will appear rich and vibrant on the eyes.
Mossy Green and Rich Mahogany
Mossy Green and Rich Mahogany both have drier formulas (not very dry; just drier than Barely Beige and Gold Shimmer) and they both look spotty and inconsisent when worn alone. Each of these shades require lots of blending and building and, even then, they don't quite look true to the colors in the pot when applied to the eyes. The beautiful red shimmer in Rich Mahogany does not translate on the eye because, after blending, most of the red shimmer fades away. Mossy Green was the most problematic of the four shades and, even after much building, I couldn't get a smooth, consistent look when trying to wear this shadow by itself. If you are planning on purchasing either of these shades, I would reserve them as base colors to wear underneath other shadows, because I don't think they work well on their own.
Now I'd like to show you some comparison swatches. I am NOT claiming that any of these shades are dupes; I'm simply showing you these colors next to other shadows in my collection to give you some perspective:
Barely Beige next to Milani Shadow Eyez in Champagne Toast
I wanted to show you Barely Beige next to a true champagne so that you could see that there is no red or pink in Barely Beige. It is a true light beige.
Gold Shimmer next to MAC Romp
In the pan, MAC Romp has a lot of gold to it, so I actually though these two colors would be closer than they actually are. You can see that Romp has more red to it, and Gold Shimmer has a lot more gold in it.
Mossy Green next to L'Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in Gleaming Bronze
As you can see, the shimmer in Mossy Green is much more subdued than the shimmer in Gleaming Bronze. Also, Mossy Green is much more of a true olive green.
When I think of browns with a lot of red in them, I immediately think of MAC Mulch, so that's why I wanted to swatch it next to Rich Mahogany. As you can see, Rich Mahogany is a dark, coffee brown with red shimmer. What's interesting to note is that the shimmer in Rich Mahogany almost perfectly matches the overall color of Mulch. It's as if you took a coffee brown and gave it a light "dusting" of MAC Mulch. I really wish the red shimmer in Rich Mahogany was more pronounced when on the eye, but since it's not, I think your best bet is to layer it with Mulch to create a deeper, browner look than if you were to wear Mulch by itself.
My recommendations:
If you're looking for base colors to give your powder eyeshadows more staying power and intensity, I think that any of the four shades in this collection would work well for that. But if you're looking for stand-alone shadows that won't require much work, Barely Beige and Gold Shimmer are the way to go. You could wear either of those shades on its own and I think you'd be pleased with the level of pigmentation and ease of use. Mossy Green and Rich Mahogany don't work well as stand-alone shadows for me, because I find both shades to be very spotty. It's difficult to get good, even coverage or pigmentation, even after much building, so I think both Mossy Green and Rich Mahogany should be reserved as base colors to wear underneath powder shadows.

Have you spotted/purchased any of these limited editions shades? What do you think of them?
Thats' so funny. I bought Barely Beige today, without too much thought, and was afraid Champagne Toast was a dupe. Thanks for that :)
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm sorry to hear your Mossy Green was dry and difficult. Mine has a lovely texture. exactly like Barely Beige. Grr, inconsistent products!
Oh wow! Well consider yourself very lucky, because the few reviews i've seen so far for mossy green all had the same issue that I did. I'm beyond jealous that yours had a lovely texture because I adore golden greens! Sounds like a batch issue and I happened to get one from the stinker batch (story of my life!).
DeleteRats! That figures that the two I like the best are the most problematic. I do believe that all four shades are perfect for the Fall season.
ReplyDeleteJudging from what Jules said above, it may be a batch issue. I say buy the ones you wanted...and just keep the receipt. :)
DeleteYou took the words right out of my mouth! I just thought, OMG! I must have that green and brown! And then I read the review...*sniffle sob*
DeleteBarely Beige will be mine.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone seen these anywhere else but Rite Aid? We don't have them in Texas and I want these so bad!
ReplyDeletePeople have spotted them at CVS too.
DeleteI'm in West Texas. Found them tonight at Walgreens!
DeleteI'm in Texas, too! I wish we had a RiteAid. So happy to hear you found them I walgreens! I checked mine and the beauty consultant said they should be getting them in late September!!! The waiting is killing me lol
DeleteBest photos I've seen for these anywhere! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking the new gold is more of an antique while the old one is more of 14k... do you have the old one to compare?
Thank you so much!
DeleteUnfortunately, I don't have the original. :(
Barely Beige and Mossy Green... Soon... I'm watching you two.
ReplyDeleteThe Barely Beige is gorgeous! I might need to get that one. The gold and brown are too similar to the Tattoo shades I already have, so I'll probably skip those. Not sure about the green. I love green shadows, but if it's spotty, I'm not sure. I'm hoping Target will come out with these since Target's prices are cheaper than at the drugstore! <3
ReplyDeletetoni
I tried to get them for BOGO1/2 off last night but the lady told me they weren't. Therefore, I had to pay 6.69 for each of them :( I went twice just to check and today, I was told that the Color Tattoos are not included in the sale. They physically walked me around the makeup isle just to show me. I was so upset. I'm still upset... *sigh*
ReplyDeleteThat's so weird! My Rite Aid literally had the yellow bogo1/2off sale tag stuck to the actual Fashion Week display! I would show a manager the ad and point out that there are no exclusions stated in the ad and politely ask for a price adjustment. :)
DeleteI bought all four at Rite Aid yesterday and they didn't ring up at the bogo1/2. I noticed after I paid. I walked right back in the store showed the manager the circular and she happily adjusted the price for me.
DeleteWhen in doubt, the circular should be the final word. I've gone so far as to call the corporate number when the RA manager refused to give me the sale price for an item that should have been on sale, per the circular. Apparently the home office contacted the manager and corrected him, because I received a phone call from the store that evening or the next day, offering to put aside the shades I wanted.
DeleteI'm hoping that Target or Meijer has these, too! I'm just itching to give Barely Beige a go. So much for my makeup "no buy" this month... There's always something new popping up!
ReplyDeleteJenny, I'm in Texas. Got them today at cvs. All of mine are creamy, not dry oR difficult.
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for these but can't find them at any of my local drugstores yet. I definitely want barely beige and gold shimmer.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see a comparison of the original Color Tattoo in Bold Gold and the new Gold Shimmer.
ReplyDeleteBummed to hear that Mossy Green and Rich Mahogany was problematic since I was eyeing those two! Thanks for the swatches!
ReplyDeleteUgh the display was picked clean at my riteaid! I managed to find one, the mahogany one, someone had placed it in the perm. Display in error. I'm on the hunt for the beige one.
ReplyDeleteI didn't see these at my Rite Aid, but we don't get new products at mine right when they launch. I did pick up Painted Purple and Edgy Emerald, and I started playing with layering powder shadows over them. I find they stay the best when they've got a primer underneath and powder on top. elf's primer works just fine, in fact it was hard to get the products off when I put them over elf primer. If you already have metallic powder shadows in shades close to this, Tough as Taupe will probably work just as well as a base.
ReplyDeleteI, too, am disappointed about the green, but will (with fingers crossed and receipt tucked firmly in my wallet) give it a shot. But I have a question: I am nearing the end of my stash of L'Oreal Hip creme in a tube that has been my go-to primer. Do you think that the Barely Beige will take its place? When I first saw the Color Tatoo formulas, I wondered if they would make a good primer, but at the time there was no "flesh" colored one to try.
ReplyDeleteI was watching Crystalis007 and she had 4 other shades, brighter colors, but all are new. Anyone else seen those?
ReplyDeleteLol! I think this is the one Maybelline color tattoo post i've written this week where I haven't mentioned those ”other” new shades. :) I posted about them a little while back with a link to swatches...they've been found by several readers at Target. Hope that helps!
DeleteThanks G. Can't believe I didn't notice you mentioning them before.
DeleteThanks so much for this review!! I can't wait for them to start appearing where I live :o)
ReplyDeleteI just saw these and these rest of the display at Harmon/NJ
ReplyDeleteprice for shadows around 4.50/under $5
Nail Polish looks really nice got the pink cosmo and the brown shade, dont remember the name, if you are in the market for a Peridot dupe it is there as well
If you want any of these colors dont wait too long
Oh they are selling a brush with the eye shadows about under $3 at Harmon
Has anybody in the Charlotte, NC area found these? Also, has anyone seen them in target yet? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love all of them except mahogany.
ReplyDeleteJust got barely beige and gold shimmer at rite aid. I already had bad to the bronze and i think the LE are even more creamy and smooth. In a word, awesome. But PLEASE make sure they ring up BOGO1/2 OFF during their promo this week bc it seems like these LE are not in their systm so at first it didn't ring up the discount. But I noticed other posts saying the same so I reminded the cashier and she was able to fix it:)
ReplyDeleteI NEED Barely Beige and Rich Mahogany. Both are right up my alley. I'm crossing my fingers they'll be at my Walgreens, though, because there's no CVS OR Rite Aid here.
ReplyDeleteAlso for anyone looking for comparisons between these new ones and similar ones in the permanent line, Amarixe did just that! With swatches and in-pot pictures :) http://www.amarixe.com/2012/08/new-maybelline-le-color-tattoo.html#more
ReplyDeleteI like the sound of Mossy Green, it sounds like a bit of a bbase to L'Oreal's Infollible in Golden Sage, which I have, but if I find these at Wal-Mart or Walgreens, I will pick up Gleaming Bronze and Mossy Green as a way to test. Normally, eye shadows do work on me so who knows if I have to use this one as a base.

ReplyDeleteI'd be willing to bet that barely beige is a dupe for mac's bare study paint pot. At least, it appears to be from your swatches. Just putting that out there for anyone wanting a low cost alternative to mac paintpots.
ReplyDeleteHey, does anyone know when Walgreens supposed to be getting these in? I tried going to one of the locations near me but nothing yet! Plus, in my part sometimes there is not many locations to none that carry limited edition products and was wondering about Walgreens to be safe.
ReplyDeleteI just spotted these at Walgreens today, but they are 7.95 each. :( They were in a large display on an endcap.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone seen these in Oklahoma? Or Joplin, MO?
ReplyDeleteHmm, I did just read the weekly sale for this week and they did say at the Walgreens I went to that it might be in a week or so. Possibly Kay you live in a different part of the US than I am, so we don't get stuff so fast like most people do.
ReplyDeleteJust picked up all of them at my local Walgreens and they were BOGO!
ReplyDeleteJust picked them all up at my local Walgreens and they were BOGO!
ReplyDeleteHey found it in my local Walgreens in NYC but the incap was empty. I was only able to get mossy green. Hope they was just putting up the display today because it was not there yesterday. I have to get them all but if not I'll keep on looking in other Walgreens and will try again in Rite aid
ReplyDeleteDarn! I should have gone to Walgreen's. I got the Mahogany and the Mossy Green at CVS, where they were BOGOHO. Got two of the nail polishes, too, which were not on sale but which were still under $4 each.
ReplyDeleteHey I found it in my local Walgreens in NYC but the incap was empty. I was only able to find mossy green. I'm hope they was just putting out the display today because it was not there yesterday. If not I'll check around for another Walgreens or even a Rite aid. I hope I can get them all.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't find them at my local Rite Aid. I will try CVS and Walgreens later on today...
ReplyDeleteThey finally had them at my local Walgreens! I went with your advise and got both of the barely beige! Since they were bogo :)
ReplyDeleteFinally found them at a CVS (in Michigan)! They were not in a display, but were mixed in with the LE polish in a plastic tote (I'm assuming to save room since the display is large)
ReplyDeleteI finally got a hold of these today at CVS. BOGO and i had $3 extrabucks! Good thing I saved the extrabucks
ReplyDeleteI still can't find them anywhere. I checked Rite Aid, Walgreens and CVS. Which Rite Aid in San Diego did you get them at?
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited I finally found them today! I live in South FL. I had a bunch of errands today so I stopped at every drugstore along the way, lol, and I found them at the 4th Walgreens I went to. They were buy one get one 50% off and there was a coupon on the display for $2 off when you bought 3. It was on an end cap and they only had two of each color on the display. I bought all four shades.
ReplyDeleteWhere in South FL, any where in the Miami area? I searched Target today but didn't have them. Gonna search Walgreens. Thanks for sharing.
DeleteThe CVS at Downtown Miami has them all. They are all rich and creamy so I think they got a good batch. I've also seen them at Walgreens off Bird Rd by Palmetto. Best of luck! :-) Oh and they where BOGO 50% at CVS so definitely keep looking.
DeleteSouth florida! Grrr..been looking everywhere with no luck!
ReplyDeleteCant find barely beige in north miami target and cvs and walgreens. Will check out soBe drugstores today!
DeleteHas anyone found these in the Bay area (CA)? I've been searching everywhere and its been driving me nuts!
ReplyDeleteI just found some today at the Walgreens in San Leandro by the San Leandro Bart Station. They only have one Beige, Mossy Green, and Rich Mohagony left because I grabbed the rest. Better Hurry! (This was the 7th store I visited..YIKES! People in the Bay Area are quick to jump on these limited edition products)
DeleteHas anyone really been able to use these Color Tattoos as just an eye shadow and not as a base? My Walgreens, CVS, Target do not have the new colors yet so I bought the Tough as Taupe and the Asphalt ones yesterday, and I am terribly disappointed. Taupe is a dry, dull gray on me and there is no way I can use it alone with just mascara/liner. It was...ugly. :-( And I never think makeup is ugly! I didn't even open the Asphalt (gray), and I might have to return both! I don't need these as a "base"; as I can just use foundation or primer and my eye shadows stay on all day. I stayed up all night watching tutorials on youtube and everybody seems to apply the "Taupe" Color Tattoo, PLUS 3-4 other eye shadows on top of it. No thanks, I was hoping this could be my go-to on days when I'm in a hurry. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI seldom ever use them alone... but I would suggest one of the more sparkly colors if you want to try. Both Bad to the Bronze and Bold Gold are lovely. Especially if the two you bought are not flattering on you.. they are both very cool tones, and the ones I suggested are both warm. I think a little sparkle just gives more dimension to a one color eye, plus it's easier to blend out smoothly. I don't know your preference for colors, but the Milani shadoweyez pencils are fantastic for "swipe on and go".. the champagne toast especially. There is a brown as well, but I have not personally tried it. In my experience they stay on better as well. Palladio has eye crayons that are dryer, but also stay on really well.. and come in some lovely wearable colors the others do not offer, like a soft dusty blue and a raspberry.
DeleteI wear these alone all the time. I actually have the asphalt one, and it works just fine. On my lid, its a nice shimmery grey color. I also like bold gold. I had the tough as Taupe- hated it.
DeleteThanks to both of you for your comments. I think you're both right that the Tattoos with shimmer are the way to go, if I want the option of wearing them alone on hurried days. The matte tone of "Tough as Taupe" just looks too dull on me. I think the alternative suggestions on Milani and Palladio are great too.
DeleteBad to the Bronze is the only one that works well on me by itself. Bold Gold is just sheer and glittery and Tough as taupe is not smooth enough but I can through justone shadow such as wet n wild's nutty on top n be good to go.
DeleteI have Too Cool from the permanent collection and mine was quite dry. :( But I will definitely be picking up Barely Beige. It's just what I was looking for!!
ReplyDeleteThey have another set of limited edition colors too! If I'm correct one of them is called "fuschia fever" the colors aren't as "natural" as these they're a lot more bold and out there but they're so gorgeous *-* i can send you a link to the video where i saw them if you want.
ReplyDeleteAnd I wanna know if anyone is having the same problem with "bold gold" from the original maybelline collection but mine is really glittery in certain spots and a it dry and applies really patchy. I've tried applying it with brushes and my fingers but I get the same results any suggestions?
My Bold Gold is the same as yours. It's sheer and glittery when I apply with my fingers. My coworker's is the same and she applies with a brush. Because I would love for it to be opaque, I bought the gold shimmer limited edition one and like it so much more. I think I could get away with wearing it on it's own just like I do with Bad to the Bronze. I am impressed with how little creasing I get with these, I could never go primer-less with any other cream shadows and others still crease over primer cough*revlon*cough
DeleteFINALLY found these and the LE quads at my local Rite Aid. Bought all of the CT's, and three of the quads.. cinnamon, cashmere, and olive. Of course Maybelline was the only brand not on sale this week.. but I was not about to let these go.. so I was in for quite the sticker shock at the register... I guess I'm not used to buying cosmetics full price! Darn you LE collections!!!
ReplyDeleteI bought Gold Shimmer and Mossy Green. The gold one is nice enough, but the green one is patchy and very, very difficult to work with. I tried using a brush, my fingers, a sponge-tip applicator-- nothing worked. I think I might be able to use it as a base for other green shadows I own, but I really wish I hadn't bought it at all and am considering taking it back.
ReplyDeleteI just picked these up (except for Mossy Green). I was so excited to get these as I never get limited edition collections.
ReplyDelete
