Another bizarre beauty tip...

A dear friend and reader recently shared with me a bizarre beauty tip that she spotted on the interwebs. As if putting Monistat on your face and using toilet seat covers as blotting paper wasn't crazy enough for me, have you heard about using clear deodorant on your face to set your foundation? Now, I've heard for years that women use aerosol hairspray on their faces to set makeup (sorry, I just can't jump on that bandwagon because my skin would never forgive me). But deodorant? I just don't know about this, ladies!

Apparently the trick is to mix a little bit of clear gel antiperspirant in with your liquid foundation before you apply it to your face. This apparently makes your foundation really last and helps to combat the greasy, oily look that we all strive to avoid on a daily basis.

(I'm neither recommending nor endorsing this brand of antiperspirant as face primer but I've read that this is one of the brands people use)

Something tells me this just cannot be good for your skin--specifically your pores--but I don't know. Have you tried it? Maybe you're a regular user of deodorant-as-primer? Tell me your thoughts--I'm begging you!

  1. I've never heard of this, and I don't think I'd try it either.
But you learn something new everyday! haha

  2. Well, it would probably not be as bad for your face as hairspray, because deodorant is at least intended to go on your skin. I still don't see myself trying this tip anytime soon.

  3. wow this is crazy I would not try this.

  4. Well, this is my very first time to read about this. I think this is not worth to try.

  5. Hey ladies! I am so glad to hear that I'm not the only one who has never heard of doing this. Also, it sort of makes me relieved to know that none of you are willing to give it a shot. I don't know...it just doesn't seem right to me!

  6. Um, yeah...that is frickin nuts. I did read awhile back in Allure about how some professional cheerleaders put it around their hairline before games to keep the sweat from pouring down their faces....I'll give a A for creativity at least!
But yeah, if I did it I would probably wake the next day with 10 big honkers on my face....(oh, I do that without putting anything odd on my face..lol...actually I'm crying on the inside a little).

  7. Hey Josi! LOL!! Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I don't need ANY help in the break-out department, thank you very much! lol :)

  8. It freaks me out, I am actually going to test a product this week that's for hyperhydrosis and supposedly safe to use on your face, underarms, bustline, hands, soles of your feet, etc. I LOVE it for my underarms but I am SO afraid to try it on my face this week. It's actually a wipe... so wish me luck! A lot of makeup artists use the deodorant trick! I'm not sure if I'm THAT daring :)

  9. Hey Amber! Wow, that product you're testing sounds crazy and I cannot wait to read your review. A wipe that prevents sweat everywhere? Wow. I can totally understand your fear of applying it to your face though. Something about that makes me think it would clog pores, but maybe that's just me being paranoid. lol.

Also, thanks for confirming that you've heard about this trick before with the deodorant. I'm going to ask the MUAs on my blogroll if they've ever tried it. I'm curious to hear from someone who has used it, even though I don't think I'd ever do it myself. lol. :)

  10. You know I have tried the other oddities you have mentioned, but I stop at deodorant on the face. I feel like it would irritate my face. I mean, sometimes, it irritates my armpits.

  11. Hey T! That is exactly how I feel! And good point about how some deodorants irritate armpits (the place where they're *intended* to be used!), let alone what they might do to facial skin. Yikes!

  12. I've heard of this tip recently, too! Though I believe it was for stopping facial sweat so your makeup doesn't get ruined.

From the perspective of an esthetician-in-training, I don't see this being good for your skin on a regular basis. Since deodorant works by blocking your sweat glands (which are connected to pores), you're essentially blocking some of your pores... which could be totally disastrous. Breakout city!

It probably wouldn't be terrible to do once in a while or for special occasions where you REALLY want to look great for long periods of time, but other than that, this stuff probably doesn't belong on your face. There is debate over whether it belongs ANYWHERE on your body!

I think I'll stick with my REAL makeup primer :) Or... the Monistat.

  13. Hey Jenn! Thanks so much for the info. It sounds like you're learning a lot of great things in your classes. :) And I totally agree with you--I just could never try this myself. I'd be too afraid of breaking out like crazy (and I don't need any extra help in that dept.!). lol!

  14. It's different and I bet it will catch on soon. Imagine when a chemical peel was first described...."a chemical solution is applied to the skin, which causes it to "blister" and eventually peel off"....I am sure people thought a chemical peel was a far fetched idea as well!
