My Little Twin Stars manicure

To put this bluntly, the following manicure makes me think of what might happen if Kiki and Lala (of Sanrio Little Twin Stars fame) threw up all over my nails. I didn't set out to create a Kiki & Lala inspired manicure, but this design quickly turned into what I'll call a Little Twin Stars tribute. (PS: Little Twin Stars is my favorite set of characters from Sanrio, in case you were wondering.)

I wanted to utilize my long-ago discontinued NYX Girls Special Glitter polish (pearl-colored stars!) and I thought it would be fun to do a blue jelly sandwich with them. After I did that, it felt like it needed more, so I decided to add some pink french tips. Those tips didn't seem right, so I covered the tips in frosty pink, and then added a bunch of holo glitter on top of that

Here are all the polishes I used for this mani:

pa Nail Polish in A134
NYX Girls Special Glitter Nail Polish in White Stars (discontinued)
Salon Perfect Professional Nail Lacquer in Bubblegum
Sally Hansen Diamond Strength Nail Color in Pulled Sugar
China Glaze Nail Lacquer in Shooting Stars

Here's the final outcome:

Is this manicure befitting of a grown woman? Probably not. Could I wear it to work? No way. Do I care? Absolutely not, because that's what the weekends are for! Mr. G thought it was way over the top and my reply? "That's the idea!"

Sometimes, ya just gotta have FUN with your nails. Life's too short to always wear nude cremes, am I right?

Have YOU ever sported an over-the-top manicure, even if it was just for the weekend? I'd love to hear all about it.

Some of the polishes featured in this post were given to Nouveau Cheap for previous reviews.

  1. I love it. And honestly, I have always wondered at the "not suitable for work" nail polish idea. It's polish, it's hardly the first thing people would notice, and it's not permanent. Honestly I'd think companies should be more concerned about the ability of their employees instead of the wearing of small, happy, non-permanent art.

But then I am weird like that :)

    1. Thanks!

And yeah, I mean, I get it if you're working in a conservative environment where you're dealing with clients or customers and the company wants you to project a certain image, but if you're working in an office where you never even SEE the public, I think things should be a bit more lenient. :)

  7. What a fun mani! And Little Twin Stars--I had a diary with them on it back in the day. :) With my love of glitter, I tend to go over the top fairly often. I got an especially high number of comments the time I wore rainbow skittles with multi-colored glitter on top.

  9. I love it G! Plus it is summer!!!! What better time for wearing fun colors!!!! I truly don't care what my clients think of my nail color. As long as it isn't all chipped up I wear crazy colors all the time! How hard was it to get the stars placed so precisely?

    1. Thanks, honey!!

I had to do some digging in the bottle to get the stars on the brush, but placement wasn't too bad...just requires a bit of coaxing. :)

  10. it is just a cute take on a french mani, not bad at all. Now if you added hello kitty decals or something then it would be LOL

  11. Wow, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this manicure! I think it's one of the cutest I've ever seen. Love the analogy you made to the Twin Stars too. :D

I'm a law student, starting to work in a study soon, and I'm not sure if I would hold back on my polishes just because it's work... I love nail polish too much and I honestly can't see why my nails would bother anyone (unless there's like offensive symbols or something!).

Thank you for sharing this manicure! I really enjoyed it!

    1. Aaaw, thank you SO much for that!! And I was really hoping someone would get a kick out of that analogy! :) xo

  12. Oh, I love this manicure! I don't know what I would do if I had to wear "office appropriate" nail color. I mean, I did a TMNT nail art for a friend's pizza party once, and I highly doubt that would pass in most offices. haha

You always inspire me to get super creative with my manicures!

I honestly don't see the line between what is appropriate for children and what's appropriate for adults. I like fun things and sometimes I want to jump in a bounce house or a ball pit or whatever! Of course, I restrain myself, but come ooon... I know when to be appropriate, I'm sure most acquaintances would think I'm super polite and even stuffy, but once you get to know me, I'm super silly! By the way, I'm 30 and I don't see myself growing up anytime soon. haha

    1. Thank you SO much for saying I inspire you. Wow, that means so much!

      That TMNT mani sounds awesome!!

PS: you're still waaaay young in my book. ;)

PPS: I dream of jumping in a bouncey castle too! Only i'm scared to because that's how a friend of mine tore his ACL. Lol! Sucks to be an adult...

    1. All you need is a sheer blue jelly, some star glitter polish (or hearts would work!), a pink frosty polish for the tips and a holo glitter top coat! :)

  16. So cute! I'm a huge HK fan and anything Sanrio. I remember being a kid and never being able to find Sanrio stuff. Now that waaayyy grown. It's everywhere! I think you inspired a chococat mani

    1. Omg, I remember that too! For years, the only place I could find Sanrio stuff was one random hallmark store in my town. And now its everywhere I turn! Lol!

And pleeeeease do a chococat mani! I would love to see! :)

  18. Love this nail look! Wish the NYX White Stars polish was still available.

So did you only wear this for 2-3 days? D: I'd want to keep them on for at least 5, but my job is too conservative for manicures like this anyway.

That's why I rarely paint my nails anymore plus the fact that my nails get ruined and chip easily. I think my dish scrub is too harsh...some metal mesh thing. x3 But it scrubs really well. Getting off-topic, haha.

    1. You need to wear d/w gloves!

      Delete
    2. L: I totally agree with D.A.!! I always wear gloves if i'm worried about messing up my mani. I don't wear yellow dishwashing gloves though...I have a Costco size box of latex gloves that I keep on hand for coloring my hair, so I just slap on a pair of those and they really save my manis. :)

  26. I think women that have to wear "professional" shades of polish these days have it pretty good now, with all the newer, but still adult, shade out there. Greige and Chanel's Paradoxal (& it's dupes) and the right shade of olive creme looks very professional to me, just not conventional, and the two are not one & the same.
