Lady Gaga's Super Bowl Makeup: Step by Step with Complete List of Products

There's no doubt that Lady Gaga's performance during halftime at Super Bowl LI (watch here) was one of the most talk-about performances at any Super Bowl. So when I received the press release containing a list of her makeup (all Marc Jacobs Beauty) for the performance, including details from her makeup artist, I thought you may find it an interesting read.

So here you go!

who: lady gaga, super bowl li half time show performer

costume: versace

makeup by: sarah tanno for marc jacobs beauty

inspiration: “to create the look, i took inspiration from all of the iconic looks throughout gaga’s career and just elevated it into something new. i wanted her to be able to look at this 10 years from now and have it feel timeless.” – sarah tanno

products (links will take you to the product pages on the Sephora site. -G.):

tips/techniques:

the eyes: tanno started the look with the eyes by applying marc jacobs beauty twinkle pop stick eyeshadow in au revoir 406, a pewter shimmer, as a base to ultimately create a feminine yet bold shimmery eye. she then lined the eyes with marc jacobs beauty highliner gel eye crayon eyeliner in violet femme 82 and blended it into the base for a soft lavender effect. next, she applied the purple shade of marc jacobs beauty about last night style eye con no 20 eyeshadow palette to add depth to the crease of the eye and then brightened the purple tones of the crease with marc jacobs beauty style eye con no 7 plush eyeshadow palette in the tease 202; this shade was also applied this to the lid. for brightness and luminosity around the eye, tanno highlighted the brow bone with the lightest pink shade from marc jacobs beauty style eye con no 7 plush eyeshadow palette in the lover 220. to add definition and outline to the eye, she then used marc jacobs beauty highliner gel eye crayon eyeliner in blacquer 42 all along the lash line to create a dramatic wing and finished it with marc jacobs beauty magic marc’er precision pen waterproof liquid eyeliner in blacquer to bring it to a sharp point and create gaga’s iconic cat eye. she proceeded to apply marc jacobs beauty highliner matte gel eye crayon eyeliner in pink of me 59 in the water line to open the eyes. tanno finished gaga’s eyes by adding multiple layers of her favorite marc jacobs beauty velvet noir major volume mascara to the top lashes and marc jacobs beauty feather noir ultra-skinny lash discovering mascara to the bottom lashes for drama. overall, tanno wanted to keep the eye shimmery and glamorous to complement gaga’s crystal eye mask for the beginning of the show, and keep them classic and feminine for the latter part.

the brows: to punctuate the eye, tanno created perfectly groomed brows on gaga in two steps: first, she applied the marc jacobs beauty brow wow defining longwear eyebrow pencil in dark brown 8 to fill in and create natural color. then, she brushed the brows into place with marc jacobs beauty brow tamer grooming gel which keeps brows put and well-defiined.

the face: to prep the skin, tanno applied a thin layer of marc jacobs beauty under(cover) perfecting coconut face primer which soothes the skin, extends makeup wear and evens skin texture for a perfect canvas. overall, tanno wanted to create a natural yet flawless face. to create depth, tanno started by applying a small amount of marc jacobs beauty re(marc)able full cover concealer in 3 young to the high points of gaga’s face and then applied marc jacobs beauty re(marc)able full cover concealer in 7 bright to the sculpting points. for an even complexion, tanno used marc jacobs beauty genius gel super-charged oil-free foundation in 44 golden medium and finished by highlighting under her eyes and the bridge of her nose with marc jacobs beauty remedy concealer pen in 6 after hours. to set the face, tanno applied marc jacobs beauty perfection powder – featherweight foundation in 360 golden and then created warmth  and contours,by dusting the marc jacobs beauty #instamarc light filtering contour powder in dream filter 20 on her cheekbones and forehead.

the cheeks: to tie eyes and lips into the look, tanno used marc jacobs beauty air blush soft glow duo in 500 lush & libido on the apples of gaga’s cheeks for a soft rose color that’s feminine and natural for a performance.

the lips: tanno wanted to create an iconic bright red lip to serve as both the perfect classic juxtaposition to the sparkling glamour of gaga’s crystal eye mask and the focal point for when she removed the mask. she started by prepping the lips with marc jacobs beauty lip lock moisture balm to hydrate and moisturize and then followed with marc jacobs beauty le marc lip crème lipstick in dashing 206. after the first layer, she blotted, and then reapplied the same shade to create the perfect candy apple red lip. for a final touch of glamour, tanno finished off the look with a touch of marc jacobs beauty enamored hi-shine gloss lip lacquer lipgloss in 332 hot hot hot, a hi-shine bright fuchsia shade.

  1. For a mere $863 you, too can be like Gaga! I thought she looked amazing last night and put on an awesome show.

    1. Lol yeah, it would be insane to purchase all of it! Thank goodness there are lots of affordable alternatives at the drugstores, right? I agree that she looked amazing last night, and this look is making me want to revisit purple eyeshadow again (which generally looks horrible on me)! ;)

  2. I have no interest in her make up. If it was talked about, it was not for how good she looked.

    1. Whoa. Well we're all entitled to our opinions, but my post on Instagram last night (https://www.instagram.com/p/BQKASgKFSWj/) certainly indicates that people were talking specifically about how good she looked (and right above your comment, as well). We'll have to agree to disagree! :)

    2. For me it was too theatrical. I know make up should b fun. However, with that said, no one in the " real world" can wear that, at least not to everyday events. Also, the cost. 900$ is a little expensive for regular people. For me that is almost a mortgage payment. But, TBH, if I had her money, one can bet it would be Tom Ford and MJ all the way.

    3. I agree, I'm not a fan of hers either and could not care less. She is big on shock value.

  3. I'd like a better closeup of it, but I always do tend to like her makeup. She often wears these pinky-nude lipsticks that I like. The cost of all that stuff, though. Too rich for my blood!

    1. I haven't seen a close-up yet, Heidi! If I find one, I'll add a link here. :)

And yeah, there's no way I could even afford 1/3 of the makeup she used with my current budget, but I tell you what. I'm looking at my WnW Petal Pusher palette right now, thinking I could make that work! ;)

  4. All marc jacobs products? Pft!!! Lol you know some of those could be duped. I would be more interested in the look if it were from lots of different brands, now I couldn't care less bc no one line has the best of every product. MUA did a phenomenal job though.

    1. Yep, the MUA works for Marc Jacobs. :)

And yep, in the comment right above yours, I mentioned that I'm thinking about using the WnW Petal Pusher palette for a similar eye look. So many pretty shades of purple in that one! :)

    1. Yep, that list is crazy, right? I don't think I've ever used that many products for a single look, but then again, if I were performing at the Super Bowl I wouldn't object to it! Lol! ;)

  7. Thanks for posting this! I thought she looked amazing and was wondering what makeup she was wearing. Loved her costumes and her performance!

  8. G, those are affiliate links, correct?

    1. Yes, I mark *every* post on my blog with "affiliate links" right at the very top of the post in the upper right hand corner.

    2. That is, IF there are affiliate links in the post. If there aren't any, then there will be no notatio. For example, if you go back three posts to my WnW highlighter, you'll see that this notation is not there, because there are no affiliate links in that particular post.

  9. Very cool, Thank you for sharing this! I have been a Lady Gaga fan since 2008, I've seen her live 2x and got to meet her! She's amazing! It was a truly flawless performance and makeup look!

  10. I don't need a step by step breakdown. I watch emilynoel, eshani and other makeup YT and nothing to me stands out as anything special. Definitely nothing worth spending MJ money on. But more power to you if you like this look and can recreate it because of NC. Gianna is a wonderful blogger who is always helping her readers out, including sharing press releases like this one.

  12. I'd love some dupes for the eyes and lips!
Honestly, she looked fantastic. She's over the top anyway, it's the Super Bowl, go big or go home! The eyes did it for me, I'd love to recreate that for a fancy date night.

    1. I've contacted Sharon of BondBeautyful and asked her to do a drugstore version. If you ask as well, I'm sure she'd take note!

  13. That is a lot of products. Although I am sort of embarrassed to admit it is not so many more products (maybe 5 or 6 more, if you count polish and and base coat and topcoat) than I am wearing to work today.

  14. I haven't seen her performance yet. As for the long list of makeup items that she wore, keep in mind that this was for a performance and they most likely went a little heavy on the items. I don't know if she wears that much in her private life. It's probably like when celebrities wear more makeup for events than they do when they are off or how we ordinary folk [:)] wear more make up for our own special events than we do daily.

    1. Several years ago, I remember reading an interview where she admits to being makeup obsessed. In any case, I think it's appropriate for celebrities to wear a lot for their jobs--especially if the MUA works for the brand and thus, their pro makeup kit has a ton of MJB products.

  15. I am sure Marc Jacobs supplied it all in exchange for the endorsement. Smart move on his part.

    1. Yes, very smart! I wonder how this move will affect his sales numbers, and whether we as consumers will ever know?!
