The Lipstick League - Week of 6.6.16

The Lipstick League Question of the Week

How do you protect your face from the sun? Do you use a moisturizer or foundation with SPF, or do you use a separate sunscreen for facial sun protection?

G's answer: if I know for a fact that I won't be out much during the day aside from occasionally running to and from my car into buildings, I just rely on the SPF in my foundation and/or moisturizer for protection. But if I'm going to be out in the sun for any prolonged period of time, then I use a separate sunscreen with at least SPF 30 either in place of my daily moisturizer or on top of my daily moisturizer (before my foundation). My skin is oily so when its hot, the sunscreen usually takes the place of my regular daytime moisturizer.

The Lipstick League Links of the Week

Prime Beauty - goes on a makeup play date at Sephora and reviews their new PLAY subscription box.

we heart this - We've got a way to get $50 off a $75 beauty order, and free shipping to boot. Nope, not a typo! And GOOD brands too; Lipstick Queen, Fekkai, Deborah Lippmann and more.

Beautygeeks - This new drugstore nail polish formula is insane, and the brush is pretty swell, too, which rarely happens at this level. See our ManiGeek’s swatches and review here.

Beauty Junkies Unite - Amber shows you how the new Customizable Click Stick collection from Cover FX works!

Blushing Noir - Two of the most perfect picks for long-lasting Summer makeup are right here!

EauMG - My May Empties were all about Korean skincare (especially TonyMoly), rich moisturizers and smelling like a rich hippie.

Gouldylox - I didn't think I needed another palette...but the cool tones in this one totally sold me.

My Beauty Bunny - Cruelty free, natural ingredients, drugstore priced, and suitable for ALL skin types? It’s true! See why we are in love with Burt’s Bees Cleansing Oil.

Nouveau Cheap - This Sinful Colors nail polish has quite possibly my favorite name of all time. But it’s also a fun color, and a portion of proceeds go to an extreme important cause.

Olive & Ivy - I’ve used Benefit products for years now and have finally narrowed down the best of Benefit- these are MUST haves!

Phyrra - I'm impressed with the new Jeffree Star Beauty Killer Palette! See my live swatches, review and looks.

  1. G, when I click on Gouldylox's link I get EauMG's site. Not sure why but I tried it 3 times and figured to let you know.

  2. We get so little sunshine where I live that I don't wear it often. When I do know I will be out in the sun I use a separate that is SPF 100. Since I've been to places that have strong sunshine I realize how much stronger the sun's strength can be. I'm in an unfortunate area.

  3. I use a face moisturizer with SPF of at least 30. I don't mess around when it comes to sun protection and I live in the Midwest where the sun isn't even as strong as most places. You would need to apply a nickel size amount of foundation in order to get the SPF advertised.

    1. Yeah, I usually use a foundation that has SPF, and sometimes a moisturizer that also has SPF, so I'm always hoping that the "double" protection will be enough just to get me through those quick walks to the car and back. But if I know I'm going to be in the sun even for as little as 10 or 15 continuous minutes, I break out the big guns! Lol.

  4. I use an actual sunscreen everyday and then put on my foundation. I am a sunscreen fanatic and as we all know the sunscreen in our foundation is not enough protection. But I agree with you, G , if I'm not really going outside I obviously just use my foundation. Great question!

    1. Thanks Carol! What sunscreen are you liking these days for under your foundation? I have ton of new samples to try (thanks to that Macy's sun set) and I'm hoping to find a holy grail because the one I'm using right now doesn't always play nicely with my foundation. I have yet to find "the one"! :(

    1. I love doubling up like that too, Randi. But if I'm going to a farmer's market, the beach, park, etc. I bust out the separate sunscreen under my foundation. Gotta call in the big guns! ;)

  6. I'm pretty sensitive to the sun so I am pretty vigilant about staying out of it from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Most of the time I use something like an SPF 30 BB cream and if I think I'll be out I'll either put on something extra underneath or powder sunscreen on top -- or both. You won't catch me standing out in bright sun ever, though. I'll either duck into the shade, or I'll pop open an umbrella to screen myself or wear a floppy hat. Plus my aunt is super sensitive to sun (she has vitiligo) and always put effort avoiding prolonged sun exposure and her skin is sublime. If you can boast a peaches and cream complexion in your late 60s, I'm following your lead.

  7. I use Cerave 30 spf moisturizer most days under my foundations. G, what moisturizer do you like to use?
