Spotted: NEW Maybelline Volum' Express The Colossal Spider Effect Mascara

NEW Maybelline Volum' Express The Colossal Spider Effect Mascara display at CVS

If you caught my sneak peek post of all the new Spring/Summer products headed our way from Maybelline, then you already knew this mascara was coming. Thanks so much to reader Saira for letting us know that it has officially landed. Saira spotted the display above at her local CVS this week and kindly shared this pic.

NOTE: check out the other products headed our way HERE. If you missed it last week, The Loaded Bolds Lipsticks have landed at Target and you can check out swatches of all 20 shades HERE.

I enlarged/cropped Saira's pic a bit for a closer look. As you can see in the image above, this mascara is supposed to give you "bold sculpted volume" and "maximum length". The bristles are "cone shaped to grab and group lashes" with a "liquid latex formula" that "sets and holds".

Maybelline Chaotic Lash Mascara vs. Maybelline Spider Effect Mascara

Since this isn't Maybelline's first "clumpy" mascara, I thought it might be helpful to compare the Spider Effect brush to the Chaotic Lash brush (Chaotic Lash came out exactly one year ago). As you can see, The Chaotic Lash brush is made of traditional nylon bristles, and it has a bent tip. The Spider Lash brush is made of rubber/plastic bristles that are only on one side of the brush. So they're definitely not the same.

Have you spotted this mascara in-store yet? Thoughts? Personally, I feel like I'm more drawn to the Spider Effect mascara than Chaotic Lash. You know I prefer a bit of clumpage to my mascaras, but Chaotic Lash seemed a bit much, even for me. Plus, the brush on Spider Effect reminds me of the L'Oreal Voluminous Butterfly brush. That mascara was OK for me (not holy grail, but I like layering it with Miss Manga--that's a wonderful combo for my tiny lashes). Since L'Oreal owns Maybelline, I'll be curious to see if the formula of Spider Lash is similar to Voluminous Butterfly, but with more volume (which now that I think about it, would be my ideal mascara!).

Thanks so much, Saira, for the great sighting and pic!

  1. Thanks for the heads up! I get happy when I see comb wands, I keep hoping they'll work like the Lash Stylist Mascara that Maybelline discontinued.

  2. Another big fan of Lash Stylist! It was my HG. Nothing has come close. Baffling why it got discontinued.

  3. Re a possible dupe for Lash Stylist (though twice the price ugh!), Is Cliniques High Lengths mascara. I was eyeing it on the Sehora site, but since I've already spent my cocktail money there this week, I've decided to wait a bit. It's got a really unusual wand. I keep (and sanitize) old mascara wands (long after the tube is dry or gone) if I liked the effect. I figure they might work as well with other mascaras as the basic mascara formula is the same. I'll be skipping the Colossal Spider Effect. My friend recently purchased it and she said it only clumps, adding no length at all.

  4. Another fan on the Lash Stylist Mascara, here! I always buy the newest Maybelline mascara, hoping it will be similar. Until then, the best dupe to get the same effect as Lash Stylist is to use LancĂ´me's Cils Booster XL (Primer) and then L'Oreal Telescopic in Carbon Black, which has a comb applicator.

  5. Spotted Maybelline's new The Falsies Push Up Angel Mascara, here on the blog, and it has a comb wand similar to the Lash Stylist. It's slightly curved. :)
