Review: Vaseline Lip Therapy Tin in Aloe

Vaseline Lip Therapy Tin in Aloe
(retail: $3.49, 0.6 oz.)

Some people love petroleum-based lip products, and some don't. Personally, I'm an equal opportunity lip balm fanatic, and there are plenty of lip products that I love that contain petroleum (Jack Black, Smith's Rosebud Salve, Glossier Balm Dotcom, Vaseline Lip Therapy, and the list goes on). If you don't care for petroleum-based lip balm products, then this review is probably not for you. But if you do, then by all means keep reading!

I was SO excited a few months ago when I saw that Vaseline brought their Lip Therapy Tins to the US (for years, they were only available in Europe). The design of these tins is inspired by the original (vintage) packaging and even though I love the mini jars, I had to get my hands on one of these tins.

The flavors that are available in the tins are the same as the ones in the mini jars (Original, Rosy Lips, and Cocoa Butter), but there's one more flavor in the tin line that you CANNOT get in the mini jar line, and that is Aloe. So naturally, that's the one I purchased. I found mine at Rite Aid (the display at my Rite Aid is next to the Vaseline body products, not in the lip balm aisle). You can also get the entire collection online at Target.

So let's take a closer look at the Aloe formula:

The tins come safety-sealed.

Made in Canada

As you can see, the ingredients are very simple. No added color, so the color is the same as regular Vaseline:

Most of you know that I LOVE Vaseline Rosy Lips (see my original review here). In fact, I love the scent and flavor of Rosy Lips so much that I was hoping Aloe wouldn't disappoint. And guess what? It didn't. The fragrance hits you the moment you open the jar, and it does actually smell like Aloe. It has that fresh, clean, green scent to it and it's very "botanical", for lack of a better word.

As for the fragrance, it actually does taste a bit like Aloe vera! I have tried those drinks that have chunks of Aloe in them (Mr. G is a big fan although I'm not, but I have taken sips off his drinks in the past) and this balm sort of tastes like that. It's not sweet--it tastes "plant-like" and I actually find myself enjoying it.

As for the texture, I think this product is a TINY bit creamier than Rosy Lips and the original Vaseline. It doesn't feel quite as slick--it just feels a little bit creamier. That could either be due to the addition of Aloe vera extract, or it could just be psychological because I know that there's Aloe vera extract in this formula. I really don't know, but I do honestly feel that it's a bit creamier than regular Vaseline (if you own this product I would love to know if you agree!).

Performance-wise, I don't really notice a huge difference between Aloe and regular Vaseline, but I feel like this product stays on my lips a tiny bit longer than plain Vaseline, and it feels a tiny bit more hydrating. It's marginal really, and it could psychological, but that's how I feel.

FINAL VERDICT: Was this worth the wait? For me, yes. I love the fragrance and flavor and I love that the formula feels a tiny bit creamier and a little more hydrating on my lips than plain Vaseline. Do I love Aloe more than Rosy Lips? No. I personally feel that it would be difficult for Vaseline to top that one. But I do feel like this is a nice alternative to have in my stash for days when I don't want a sweet or candy-like flavor on my lips. If you generally love fresh, green, botanical fragrances, I think this one's worth a shot!

Do you own any Vaseline Lip Therapy Tins? If so, which flavor(s) do you own and how do you like them?

  1. Hi there! I've been using the Original and Aloe tins, and I find them both very similar in consistency. The original has no scent, but contains shea butter, I find it slightly more moisturizing than the Aloe version (but this may be a trick of the mind lol), but both feel equally as nice on the lips. They don't last nearly as long on the lips as the small tubs.

I had previously used and loved the little tubs of vaseline lip therapy in original. I tried cocoa butter, but the scent was too overwhelming for me, someone who typically avoids fragranced products. The tubs haven't been available where I live (in eastern Canada) for a while, unfortunately. But I found the original tiny tub to be much better a much longer lasting than the tins, it was actually the first and only thing that I could put on a night and still feel on my lips in the morning. I have to reapply the tins much, much more often. The tubs had a thickness and stickiness to them that the new tins don't. I like the new tins, but I wish the old tubs were still readily available as well.

    1. Yeah I can see where the consistency would have to differ between the mini tub and the tin....I loved the cute little tubs but I think I avoided using them. I guess the tin is easier to use? I also got the aloe because it was a new/different one not available in the mini tubs. I liked it a lot for this past winter!

  2. I love my Rosy Lips and the Creme Brulee in the mini jar but after awhile it's too messy and I find myself avoiding them. I am excited to try one in the tin to see if it is less messy. I am intrigued now by the Aloe. I didn't think it would have a scent! Thanks!!!

  4. With the addition of the aloe I think I'd be using it on other spots. On dry cuticles, etc. Sounds like it begs to be used for more than a lip balm.

  5. My mum sent me this and a few of the Nivea Blueberry lip butters in a care package from home and .. I hated it. Wanted to love it but it's so floral.

I use an aloe sunscreen that smells fresh and clean, but this just smelled like perfume. So now I use it to moisturize my puppy's paw pads since he doesn't like it either and won't lick it off.
