The Wednesday Question

If you could bring back one fragrance from your past (perfume, shampoo, body wash, whatever), what would it be?

My answer: without a doubt, it would be the original Kors Michael Kors perfume from 2003. It smelled of red wine, roses, and leather and it was perfection. I have a few drops left in my last bottle and it's now impossible to find even on eBay. I would give anything to have another bottle of this perfume. Fun fact: I even went on Fragrantica and discovered that people said that Love Ralph Lauren was similar, so I ordered a few sample vials off eBay out of desperation. While it is similar, it's not exact. But guess what? Love Ralph Lauren is now discontinued too! The universe clearly doesn't want me to have another fragrance like this.

    2. I loved Kors with the swivel cap. Such a lovely fragrance that I would definitely want to see released again.

  2. My favorite fragrance comes from Avon and they keep discontinuing it then bringing it back and it's gone once again. It's very frustrating. It was first called "Little Black Dress" but I don't remember what it was renamed before it got discontinued again. It's described as an oriental fragrance. I called it a sexy and sophisticated fragrance. It's smells divine. I stocked up on bottles when it went on clearance and keep it in a cool dry place to hopefully keep it from going bad.

  3. Chaos from Donna Karen, it had cardamom in it, very spicy and what a cool bottle. The perfume came in crystal shard in a gray silk box.

    1. Oh my goodness, Chaos is heavenly. It shows up on eBay but costs a fortune. You can get it in smaller amounts from decanting shops like The Perfumed Court and Surrender to Chance... I have a 5ml decant that I have been hoarding for ages.

    2. It's been reissued, same name different packaging. I think only Neiman Marcus sells it. I found out just last week as I was reminiscing about old scents and googling them.

    3. oh my gah, someone is selling a sample of Chaos for 30.00. WTF?

    2. Is that new stock or old stock? She's been doing Old Skool Exclusives but I think it's just limited numbers of stuff left over from the initial run of various makeup products. I could be wrong, though!

      Delete
    3. I think it's new stock? The description just says that they "brought it back" but I don't remember the packaging being like this in the original run (I just remember the roller balls and large glass bottles from back in the day). I could be wrong though!

  7. The Body Shop's Fuzzy Navel perfume oil. In my memory, it's the perfect peach scent, and every peach note now has to live up to it.

    1. Aaaah, that was a good one! I also miss TBS Dewberry, which is like $60 on Amazon now. Dewberry takes me right back to my college years (along with Bath & Body Works Flowering Herbs). :)

  8. I Loved Pearls and Lace by Avon, but sadly it was discontinued

  9. Chaos by Donna Karan. I think they reformulated it and offered it many years after the original was launched but it was just not the same fragrance, at all.

  10. - Avon Regence. It was my mother's signature scent, and while I probably wouldn't wear it often, it would bring back a lot of memories now that she's gone.

    - Avon Somewhere. This was the scent my mother bought for my sister and I when we were little, mostly in little cologne bottles. I still have a small bottle, but I'm fairly sure the scent's gone off. (I also have the penguin-shaped bottle of Avon's Field Flowers I received for Christmas in my teen years. Avon was prominent during my growing up years.)

    - A rollerball I bought at the long gone chain store MediMart around 1981 that smelled *exactly* like fresh lilacs. So many lilac scents smell nothing at all of real lilacs, but this was perfect. I can't remember the name at all, just it was a light purple liquid in a rollerball (yeah, that narrows it down), and I could have drowned in the scent.

  12. I still wear both fragrances that I wore as a teen( young adult). Rain oil from a shop in San Francisco( out of business, but the owner still does mail order) and Opium( I would DIE if that was ever discontinued).

    1. Randi, I'm wondering if the perfume oil you're talking about is from the original co-founder of Body Time in Berkeley? I know that three woman founded that company and one went off and had her own company (I can't remember the name now, but I think it's online-only now). At any rate, Body Time has a Rain perfume oil (in addition to the original China Rain, which is one of my faves of all time). I wonder if their Rain is the same as your Rain? If so, they have multiple brick & mortars in the bay area in case you're ever up there:

    2. I used to get it in the Castro. Shop was called skin zone. He had a ton of oils and other unscentwd products you could add scent to. When I met my wife Julie back in 1993', I was wearing rain. When we reconnected in 2009, she mentioned how she never forgot that scent. I went looking for it again and found the original place I used to buy it. He closed the shop but I still mail order it from him.

  13. When I was a kid my mom used to wash my hair with an Yves Rocher shampoo that smelled like green apple. I think it was super popular in France at that time because all my friends' hair smelled like green apple too! I'd love to get that scent, for a trip down memory lane.

As for perfume, I had one from a French brand based in Grasse called Molinard, I don't remember what it was called, but it smelled like coffee and orange. It was unique, very surprising, and somehow I completely associated it with the color brown. Whenever I wear a brown top (not very often) I still instinctively look for that perfume! I broke the bottle years ago and it's been discontinued :/

    1. I love Molinard! I'm trying so hard to remember that fragrance and all I can come up with is Orange Cannelle. Maybe it's similar? Here's a link:

  15. Bath and body works used to have a Gardenia body wash which smelt so good. They changed the formula and then discontinued it. :(

  16. Slightly on topic, the Dollar Tree has perfume dupes from the brand Jean Philippe Paris (the best brand, the others are just meh) and Walgreens has their Instyle brand of dupes. Both brands come very close to the original smell.

  17. I miss my Blueberries n Cream Lip Smacker Swirl Gloss. It was the best blueberry flavor ever! I also miss my Berry Blue Jello Lip Smacker.

I have a huge bottle of Carried Away by Bath and Body Works because it was discontinued. I forgot if it was brought back or not. I tend to really like fruity floral scents with vanilla.

  18. Amorito by The Body Shop. I have about a quarter of a bottle left and I only wear it for special occasions. Chocolate, vanilla and jasmine... so beautiful and so heart breaking that it I'll never get to wear it again when this is gone.

    1. This was truly lovely! I can't believe that it's going for like $150 on eBay now.

BUT, I noticed that Fragrantica members say that Zara Chocolate (link below) is quite similar and you can find it on eBay for under $20. Maybe worth a shot?

  20. Back in the day, Avon had a scent that was the best honeysuckle scent in the world. I mean it was spot on and I don't even remember the name. That's what I wish for to come back.

  21. It's gotta be Bath & Body Work's, Vanilla Noir. It came out one of the many times I worked there and I was in love!! I remember your post calling it a sexy adult vanilla, totally accurate! Luckily I bought a lot of things at work and was able to swap some items on makeup alley and got a full size bottle. I pretty much only use it in winter, but I LOVE the stuff! (It's funny cause women would gripe all the time to associates about juniper breeze, country apple, exotic coconut, being discontinued etc. Obviously we have no control, or they'd still sell what I want)! LoL

  24. I'd like to bring back my ability to wear any fragrance at all (darn scent migraines!) But if I had to limit to one, it would be DHC #8 from about 15 years ago. I still have the bottle, but it's went bad :'( They discontinued their perfume lines a couple months after I bought my bottle of it. It was black raspberry & passion fruit with a soft underlying floral that didn't dominate like so many other "fruity" perfumes. I could have swam in it back then lol

  25. I loved the smell of Agree shampoo when I was a child. Lately, I'm being looking for something that resembles VS Bejeweled gems or was it fruits? If someone remember the correct name or have suggestions, they are more than welcome and thanks in advance. 😊

  26. My favorite scent of all time, Bvlgari Omnia (the original in the brown bottle), was discontinued. I'm on my last bottle!! I was able to get it at Ross & TJ Maxx for a while, but I haven't seen it there in a couple years. I know it's on Amazon, but I'm wary.
BTW, G., I sent you an email today about a bottle of Madonna Truth or Dare Naked - would you like it? I also have a bottle of Estee Lauder Sensuous Nude, which is quite similar to my nose. Both fragrances give me headaches. I also have an unused bottle of Bath & Body Works Vanilla Noir (I think) if someone wants that one. Can you tell I'm trying to declutter in anticipation of a summer move? LOL

  27. Desire by Alfred Dunhill. They still sell the men's version but discontinued the women's back in the early 2000's. It was sweet, but had a totally sexy full body smell. It's the only perfume my husband ever liked on me.

  30. Honeysuckle Splash by Estee Lauder. Oh I loved that scent so much when I was younger. My grandmother could never resist buying every new scent that Estee Lauder put out, but she didn't care for the way that one smelled on her, and I went crazy for it. Because of that perfume I have to try anything that lists honeysuckle as a note, lol. In fact, I just ordered a bottle of Honeysuckle from Demeter Fragrance Library, and I have high hopes for it!

  32. I can't choose just 1! There are two that I used to wear all the time. The first is Spring Rain by Crabtree & Evelyn. A clean, fresh, floral and one of the very few fragrances I've worn where people would stop me at the supermarket to ask me what perfume I was wearing.

The other would be Oceanus by The Body Shop. I've found a couple of etailers who make dupes, and they're close, but not quite exact :-(

  33. I know that this is very random, but Farrah Fawcett had a shampoo that smelled so good!

  34. Victoria's secret had this perfume in like 1995/96 called Azurine. Omg it was the best. It wasn't floral, or herbal, or food-like or sweet. It was more refreshing, like the ocean. It was aqua in color and i had the body lotion too, and some body oil thing that would separate in the bottle and turn two-toned. And some body lotion-turned-powder thing came in the set that I never used.
Also Outrageous Shampoo & Conditioner (by Revlon?) I used that in late 90's/2000 and got compliments all the time like "what perfume is that, you smell so good." A few years back, I found some on ebay because Canada still made it. Maybe they still do.

  36. Mainly I wish I could find a perfume that truly smells like lilac, hyacinth or lily of the valley. I have found a couple good perfumers and copycat perfumers on Etsy, so I have hopes I'll find those eventually. Otherwise I'm pretty well stocked on my favorites. For now...

  37. Sparkling Cassis one of the earliest (and best) scents from Bath and Bodyworks. I am real funny about scents and it was one of the few that I could wear anytime, anywhere and any season.(And it not get on my nerves, after a while) It smelled really, really good. I was SOOOO disappointed when they discontinued it. I could not find it anywhere nor could I find a dupe. But I keep hoping! Great question.

  38. My favorite scent was a Special Edition from Bath and Body Works in 2003 called Graperuit Jasmine. I'm still hoarding my original body spray and I would love to get enother bottle of it.

  39. I love Rice Flower & Shea from Bath & Body Works, but they haven't brought it back for a semi annual sale in a few years. I think it's officially gone now. :(

  40. The Ivory shampoo from the late 80s. Every time my hair moved I could smell it. I have never found anything again that releases a scent when I move. Even when I perfume my hair. My other favorite is BBW Vanilla Chamomile Sleep lotion. I stocked up on three bottles before it was discontinued, and I have 1/2 bottle left. :( There are other scents, but none of them are the same. WHY...???
