Review: Softlips Cube Hello Kitty Limited Edition Holiday 2015 Gift Set

It's here! You might recall that back in June, I reviewed the original three flavors in the Softlips Cube Hello Kitty collection (Apple, Passion Fruit and Strawberry Banana). At that time, I mentioned that Softlips would be releasing a "mystery flavor" as part of a special 4-pack set for the holidays, and I revealed that mystery flavor to you last month (Cupcake, which you can also purchase individually). Well the Holiday 2015 Softlips Cube Hello Kitty Limited Edition 4-Pack Gift Set is now here (you may have already seen it at Target), so here's my review!

Note: I received this set, along with the Softlips Cube Limited Edition Holiday 2015 Set, from Softlips, and I'll be reviewing that set very soon too.

Softlips Cube Hello Kitty Limited Edition Holiday 2015 Gift Set
(Suggest retail price: $9.99 for four full-size Softlips Cubes)

This set can be found in-store at Target as well as other major retailers. You can purchase three of these flavors individually on the Softlips website, and thanks to several of you for letting me know that you can purchase the full set on the Sanrio website.

UPDATE: The 4-pack set at Target is slightly different than the one featured in this review. At Target, you will find all four of these flavors packaged individually in their own blister packs like these. Also, thanks to reader Lily for letting us know that she found this set in the seasonal holiday area at her local Target. So try looking there as well (in addition to the health and beauty aisles).

For a full list of ingredients, please see my original review here. All four lip balms contain SPF 15.

Since I already reviewed Apple, Passion Fruit and Strawberry Banana HERE, this review is going to focus solely on the fourth flavor, Cupcake.

As you can see, Cupcake has blue packaging (I love this shade of blue) and to me, the scent is more reminiscent of chocolate covered donuts than cupcakes. A kind reader who found Cupcake last month mentioned that she thought this smelled like chocolate covered donuts as well, and now that I have it in my possession, I completely agree with her! I detect a chocolate note here, but there's also a vanilla cake note. I don't get any cupcake frosting, but I actually love the scent of chocolate covered donuts, so I love the scent of this lip balm.

As for the flavor, I think this actually tastes like a chocolate covered donut too, but it has that signature underlying mint note that you get with all Softlips Cubes. The mint is sort of in the background though, so when it mixes with the chocolate, it doesn't give off a Thin Mint Cookie vibe. To me, it almost tastes like if you were chewing mint gum, and then had a chocolate covered donut immediately afterward. Does that make sense? It's more like the mint is just lingering in the background, rather than becoming part of the flavor.

FINAL VERDICT: I think Cupcake is a fun addition to the Softlips Cube Hello Kitty collection, and I'm happy they gave us a dessert-type flavor in addition to the fruity flavors. I'm a big fan of bakery-type scents and flavors, and this one didn't disappoint. Plus, how cute is this packaging? I think this gift set is kind of the ultimate stocking stuffer for those who love lip balms and Hello Kitty, especially at $10.

Once again, this set can be found in-store at Target as well as other major retailers. You can purchase three of these flavors individually on the Softlips website, and thanks to several of you for letting me know that you can purchase the full set on the Sanrio website.

  1. I bought all of these individually when I saw them at Target but now I'll probably get the gift set as well! Overkill? Maybe but it's Hello Kitty and I'm a sucker. Thanks for the post!

    1. Hey Barbara! I've heard from readers who have found them in the beauty department, and I've also heard from readers who have found them on end-caps in the cold/flu medicine area, as well as by the registers. My best advice would be to look everywhere the next time you're in the store. Sorry I can't be more specific but it sounds like it really varies from store to store. Good luck and I hope you find these soon! :)

    1. I believe you'll be able to find at CVS, Walgreens and Kmart, but I'll try to get confirmation on that!

  4. I'm disappointed that these are SPF 15. I'm allergic to SPF lip balms, so it would be useless for me to try these (but I would like to).

    1. Aaaah, sorry! All of the permanent Softlips Cubes contain SPF, so I'm not surprised that the LE ones do too.

  5. I saw these at Target in the makeup dept. I am holding out for the Cupcake flavor. I don't really want the others but I think they are all adorable!!!

    1. Thanks, Robin! If you can't find the Cupcake single, maybe you can give the other three in this set away as stocking stuffers? Although I really think you might like them if you try them - - they don't remind me of any other lip balms I own. ;)

  7. I found mine today at Target in the Holiday section near all the wrapping paper and candy. They were $10.99 and here was also a 10% Softlips Cartwheel discount. I believe it's through 11/28, but I'm not positive. I also have a Target Red Card, so I got an additional 5% off. I know they usually mark down their holiday stuff in January, but I thought these might sell out.

  8. Yes they were in the big stocking stuffer display at my target. I was so disappointed with the sweet cupcake sent though. It had no resemblance of a cupcake at all & really just smelled like plastic. The packaging saves it for me though. I'm such a HK lover even at age 37!
