The Lipstick League - Week of 7.27.15

The Lipstick League Question of the Week

Name the very first lipstick you ever purchased (if you can’t remember, pick the earliest one you remember purchasing).

G's answer: The earliest lipstick that I can remember purchasing with my own money was an original Wet n Wild lipstick (I have no idea what the number was). It was a bright cherry red creme that I wore to my prom, and it was in the old-style white tubes from the 80s, when all of WnW's packaging was white (like these nail polishes). This was before the old black tubes and before the silver tubes. If any of you can find a pic of the original white tubes, I would be so grateful. I would love to see one again!

  1. I remember those white tubes. I'm not sure what lipstick I bought first, but an early one that stands out is a late 1980s tube of some burgundy red I found for under a buck at a drugstore. I think it was called black cherry or something like that. I felt so grownup putting that on. I also remember a light to medium pinky nude by Cover Girl that I loved a lot, which I probably got in 1989 or 1990.

    1. Omg I was hoping you'd comment and remember those tubes, Heidi! Since we're the same age, I really hoped you'd remember them! I searched high and low on Google images for a pic, but nothing! :(

Oh and btw, I totally remember that CG shade. Well, I THINK I do...I remember loving one at that time that fits your description!

    2. Ha, I went looking for the white tubes, too. I remember the nail polish bottles you posted. I had a teal and a kind of forest green nail polish, probably pearl finish (or perle, as I think they called it then) and I am sure it was Wet n Wild. I'm also trying to remember that Cover Girl nude-brown I got. I loved that so much and cannot recall the name, but I remember wearing it so often.
I know I bought Maybelline Kissing Coolers and stuff like that, too, but that deep red and the pinky-brown made me feel so sophisticated. So did those Revlon ColorStay formulas when they first came out in those skinny black tubes. I loved Raisin Rage, Toast of New York and their Sandalwood Beige (which wasn't ColorStay, but a favorite of the time, when I was blonde and thought it worked, though it probably didn't).

  3. Thanks for the reminder of the horrible lipstick I wore! It was also Wet n Wild. It was a nude peach type color with a glittery lustre finish and I thought it looked so good on me that I happily forked over my dollar on a regular basis. Those were the days... Stacie xo

  5. Oh gosh, what a tough question! I honestly don't remember! It was probably a cheap drugstore lipstick though... from Catrice or Essence most likely.

  6. Ok I am totally going to be dating myself on this one! The first lipstick I ever bought was from Cutex!! It was a shimmery light pink that a 13 year old girl in the 70's would appreciate! I thought I was EVERYTHING with that lipstick!

  7. Sephora lipstick in a brick red color that I am not sure they make anymore. I only started wearing makeup in college.

    1. Well the fun thing about getting a later start is that you get to make up (pun intended) for lost time. Lol!! :)

    1. Aaaah, thank you! That's actually the exact same pic I linked to in my post. Those had white lettering, but the tubes before that were all white. I swear there is no photographic evidence of those tubes on the Internet! Lol! :(

  9. Probably a Wet n Wild lipstick in a shade similar to Cherry Frost, back in the early 90s, by my Mom to use on me for dance performances when I was in ballet. We were required to wear red lipstick, pink blush, royal blue eyeshadow and black eyeliner so we could be seen from the stage. Mom didn't mind sharing her Mary Kay makeup with me, but it was annoying when other girls in the class "forgot" their makeup and wanted to borrow ours. Yay for cheep drugstore cosmetics <3

  10. I don't remember the first lipstick I bought but I do remember that Photo was my very first MAC lipstick I purchased. Crazy to see those 90's browns are back in style.

  11. I don't think it was the first one, but the one I remember the most was a long, thin gray/taupe tube (I thiiiiink it was L'oreal) with a matte brown color. It was my signature color back in 1997.

  12. I feel like mine was probably mood lipstick that I bought at Claire's in maybe 1990.

  13. Jane brand in rockin' rose I think it was called.

  14. Actually it was Loco Coco. I found an old tube in my makeup case Lol.😂

  15. While I don't remember the first lipstick I purchased myself, I do recall the very first that my mom allowed me to chose back in 3rd grade...it was Cotton Candy by Brucci. It was a light pearly pink, and later on I got a similar shade by Brucci called Pookie Pink. I tried to look them up but there is no mention anywhere online.
