Review: White Rain Boutique Collection Skincare from Dollar Tree

When it comes to bath & body products at Dollar Tree, I feel like they can end up in one of two categories: "pleasant surprise" or "epic fail." So when I finally found the new-ish skincare products from White Rain at my local Dollar Tree a month or two ago, I just had to give them a shot. I mean, for a dollar each, why not roll the dice, right?

White Rain Boutique Collection Skincare
(retail: $1 each at Dollar Tree, 4 oz.)

Keep reading for my full review...

As I've mentioned here on the blog before, White Rain is a brand that's been around for decades (my mom exclusively used White Rain hairspray when I was a kid, back when it looked like this). White Rain is made by High Ridge, which is the same company that makes Vo5, Zest, Coast and Rave. Their products are made in the USA.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, on to the reviews!

White Rain Boutique Collection
Shea Butter Body Lotion, Daily Foot & Heel Cream, Facial Cleanser & Make-Up Remover

There is also a Gentle Facial Scrub and Moisturizing Shower Gel in the White Rain Boutique collection (you can see what those look like here), but I couldn't find those products at my Dollar Tree.

As far as the packaging goes, I like it! The tubes are long and narrow and the finish on the tubes is matte. Overall, I find the packaging and design to be very pleasant (more on the elegant side of the spectrum than the obnoxious side, which is always appreciated). All of these products have flip-top lids.

Shea Butter Body Lotion

This product is a standard, opaque white lotion (nothing exciting, which is why I'm not including any photos). The consistency isn't super thin or watery, but it's definintely not a thick body cream. It's a lotion, for sure. The fragrance is very pleasant--it smells sweet yet clean; sort of like a shampoo.

Overall, this is a pretty standard lotion. It sinks into the skin quickly and it leaves a soft residue behind. It doesn't feel sticky or greasy after it sets; if anything, it feels a little bit waxy to the touch, much like other lotions that contain similar ingredients. Obviously I would have liked to have seen shea butter up higher on the list of ingredients (it is, after all, in the name of the product), but for $1, I'm not disappointed with this lotion. I've actually used lotions from the drugstore that cost 5-7 times as much, with less favorable results.

This is the kind of lotion that I can keep in my car for emergencies or throw in a tote bag and not really worry about losing. In other words, it's a good "just in case" type of product.

Daily Foot & Heel Cream

It's sort of funny to me that THIS product actually appears to contain more shea butter than the Shea Butter Body Lotion, since shea butter is higher up on the list of ingredients. Also, fragrance is lower down on the list (it's the last ingredient) than in the Shea Butter Body Lotion, so this could be a better option for those who are sensitive to fragrance in their skincare.

For me, this didn't cut it as a foot cream, since it's kind of thin and really more like a body lotion. It's a TINY bit thicker than the Shea Butter Body Lotion, but not really by much. I actually find that this makes a nice hand cream, rather than a foot cream. This product is opaque white, just like the Shea Butter Body Lotion, but it has more of a glycerin-y type texture, if that makes sense. I don't get as much of a waxy feel on my skin after this cream sets (it aborbs very quickly, just like the lotion) and my skin just feels soft after I use it.

The fragrance is similar to the body lotion, but to me it smells more floral; almost like that pink generic hand soap you find in public restrooms. Sort of. I don't know...it smells familiar yet generic to me. Pleasant, but not noteworthy.

I can see myself keeping this in my desk drawer, purse or car. If you work in an office and are typically the person that people come to when they need hand lotion (my title in pretty much every office job I've ever held!), this could be a nice one to whip out and not have to worry about people using up your "good stuff."

Facial Cleanser & Make-Up Remover

This facial cleanser is clear and colorlesss, with a thin, gel type of texture. The way it feels during application reminds me of the Simple Moisturizing Facial Wash, if you're familiar with that product. It has that same gel-like texture, and it's also low-foaming (just like the Simple cleanser). The scent is, once again, pleasant, but not noteworthy. It's sort of fresh and clean, with a little bit of a floral note. Also, the scent is not strong (it's the last igredient in the formula).

Overall, this is a pretty standard facial cleanser that I neither loved nor hated. It did an OK job at removing my makeup, but it did not remove stubborn mascara or waterproof eyeliner. This is the type of product that you might want to use as a second-step cleanser (after a cleansing balm, etc.) or you could use it by itself on low-makeup days. I also tried it for washing my makeup brushes and it did a pretty good job at that!

I also want to note that my skin doesn't feel dry or tight after rinsing this product, but of course your mileage may vary there (keep in mind that I have oily skin).

FINAL VERDICT: To answer the question I posed at the top of this review, I would definitely consider these products to be a "pleasant surprise" rather than an "epic fail." I like the lotion, but I prefer the foot cream a tiny bit more (and I like the foot cream more for hands than feet). The cleanser is actually a lot better than I was expecting it to be, and I can see it being a "back-up" type of product that I would reach for if I'm out of my favorite cleanser (it also does a decent job at cleaning makeup brushes). If you're on a super tight budget, these could definitely be products to consider (I have most certainly used worse, both from the drugstore and dollar store). I also like the idea of having these in the car, or for travel in general, because the low price means you don't have to worry about losing them. And they're easy to replenish as well, when you run out.

Have you tried any White Rain Boutique Collection products from Dollar Tree? If so, I would love to know what you've tried, and how these products have been working for you!

  1. The facial cleanser seems good to me considering it's only one dollar! The ingredients shouldn't be irritating to the skin

  2. I have tried the cleanser & the facial scrub. I haven't seen the others at my DT yet. The scrub is mild & I think good for sensitive skin. I agree, they aren't phenomenal nor are they bad products! Def worth a dollar & a good amount of product for a buck!!

  3. Thanks for the review! I have had several "epic fails" when it comes to skincare and body lotion from the drugstore, so it is nice to know that these work.

  4. I bought the facial scrub G and it's fine. For a buck I didn't expect it to be super gritty and it wasn't. It has a very mild grainyness. It's good to keep on hand.

  5. I'm loving the packaging the most. I might try these once I use some stuff up. I just took stock and I need eight hands and eight feet to get through some of my purchases.

  8. Awesome! I saw these at my local dollar tree, but like you I was skeptical. Will definitely have to try them out, especially the fact that they're paraben-free.

  9. I tried both the Heel and Foot Cream and the Facial Cleanser and found the former to be about average, but the Cleanser was quite a pleasant surprise for me! It took off my mascara and blush as well as foundation with little trouble; overall, I will buy more of the Cleanser but probably skip on the Heel and Foot Cream next time around.

  11. I have tried the Facial Cleanser and I liked it so much that I bought a second container of it for when I run out. It does the job just as good as any other cleansers that I've used in the past and the price is right. I hope that Dollar Tree continues to carry this product.

  12. I loved the foot cream - smells great and works at least as well as what you'd buy in Bath & Body Works. I had a bad reaction to the facial wash, though, which was disappointing because it smelled so good! I'm 40 years old and have never had an allergic reaction to a skin product...so it might be smart to test it on a small patch of skin first. My face swelled up like a beet and I had hives everywhere the product had touched...but Benadryl brought everything back to normal in about an hour.
