A $4.99 Magnetic Palette You Can Find at Your Local Craft Store

If you are on #TeamDepot (aka: you de-pot your shadows, blushes, etc. and put them in empty magnetic palettes for ease of use), or if you've been thinking about joining #TeamDepot but you don't want to commit to higher-priced palettes, this post is for you!

How does a $4.99 palette with a strong magnetic base and a see-through (pink!) lid sound to you? If you're saying, "Heck yeah!" then keep reading for the scoop, and some pics of this palette in action...

Artbin Sew-lutions Slim Line Magnetic Needle Case at Joann Fabric & Craft Store
(regularly $9.99; on sale for $4.99)

The Artbin Sew-lutions Slim Line Magnetic Needle Case can be found at your local Joann Fabric & Craft Store (or online) for $9.99, however Joann often runs 50% off sales on their storage products, which they are running as of the time of this post. Alternatively, you can purchase this palette on Amazon for $4.99 (free shipping if you have Prime).

This palette has been taking the online beauty community by storm these days, and I'm guessing you may already have seen mentions of it on various beauty blogs, YouTube channels, makeup message boards, Reddit, etc. I wish I knew who originally discovered this gem, but I went down the rabbit hole the other night trying to find the first mention of it and I couldn't defiinitively confirm that (if you know, please comment below and fill us in!).

Want to see this palette in action? Here you go:

I received this great photo from reader @strangebeautyinfo on Instagram. As you can see, she de-potted her Wet n Wild eyeshadows (I spy singles, trios, 6-pans and 8-pans here) and placed them into two Artbin Needle Cases. I've seen many people mention that the magentic base on these palettes is quite strong (I mean, it's designed to hold scissors so it has to be pretty strong) but @strangebeautyinfo reinforced them by adding double-sided tape to the pans.

I know that some of you DIY your own palettes by using everything from CD cases to cookie tins to pencil boxes. But if you don't want to have to use double-sided tape or sheets of magnetic strips, and just want a palette that already contains a magnetic base (and a clear lid!) then this could be a very affordable alternative for you. You sure can't beat the price.

NOTE: There is a logo on the lower right corner of the lid (see HERE), but I've heard that a little polish remover or rubbing alcohol can remove it, or you could just put some cute stickers on top of the logo if the logo isn't to your liking.

If you don't have room in your budget for the ever-popular Z Palettes or UNII Palettes, this could be a nice alternative. And if you're someone like me, who is constantly tempted to join #TeamDepot but doesn't want to commit to an expensive palette, this could be a nice, hassle-free way to test the waters and see if de-potting is for you. I think I'm going to visit my local Joann this week while the sale is on, and finally take the plunge!

Thanks so much, @strangebeautyinfo, for the great pic of this palette in action!

  1. Very cool! This might inspire me to depot. Great tip about removing the logo. Thanks, G!

  2. I've been on the fence for a while but was looking into DIYs bc I refuse to spend like $20 and shipping for empty palettes! Lol but I think I'll hit up my Joann's for this! $5 is a great price and I'll probably use this for my wet n wild shadows too! I don't think I'd ever depot high end palettes though, but my drugstore shadows without special packaging I think I'll give it a go! Thanks for the info!

    1. That's my problem too. I'm just not sure if I'm a depotting kind of girl, so I don't want to commit to a higher priced, professional caliber palette until I know for sure I like this method. This is such a great alternative, considering that when you DIY, you have to buy tape and/or magnetic strips to turn a CD case into a palette. With this being five bucks total, how can I NOT try it, right?? :)

  3. I bought these a couple of years ago for this purpose but then they were out of stock for so long! They work pretty well, although I find the magnet isn't quite strong enough for some of my make-up pans (differences in metal content I would imagine). That being said, I had some double sided tape which fixed that problem. Very sturdy packaing and you can't beat the price! Thanks for the post-love your site!

    1. Thanks so much for the feedback! I've seen pics of people holding them upside down and the pans didn't drop, but your point about different metal content from pan to pan is excellent! If I end up becoming a depot girl, I will certainly invest in some tape if things slide around. Thanks again!

  4. A little bit of a tangent, but I depoted my eye shadow (mainly wet-n-wild) into a plastic watercolor paint container (like the kind that you buy at any store for kids to use). It's super sturdy and it was deep enough to put eye shadows on the top and bottom. I used hot glue and not magnets -- I just wanted all of my shadows in one spot and didn't care about moving 'em afterwards. It was a great $2 solution.

  5. Do you have any idea how these will work with Makeup Geek shadows? Avoiding buying a Z palette has been the main reason I haven't purchased any of these highly reviewed products yet.

    1. The link in my post (see the "NOTE") takes you to a blog post with pics of this palette holding some MUG shadows. Hope that helps!

  6. Pinned this for later! I'm looking to start depotting and this is a great alternative than a more expensive palette! Thank you!

  7. I have one Unii palette I got a while ago when it was on super sale, but I still haven't depotted anything. I'm kinda scared of ruining my eyeshadows, but I'm inspired by the Wet n Wild shadow palette above!!! So many shadows in one container.

  8. I found this post dated 6 months ago, showing 18 MUG eyeshadows can fit into it http://imgur.com/a/Qf94O. Hobby Lobby has it too but shipping to Canada either difficult or expensive

  9. I freaked and went to Joanns right after I saw your post , anyone going in store can pull up the 60% off coupon mine came out to $4.32 thanks G :)

  10. I did this with a cd case as well! if you look around you can save so much money doing DIY palettes!

  11. Oh G! Last time I tried a depot I used a CD case and it bugged me that I couldn't get everything in it properly. Also it opened and everything broke. I think this is brilliant! I only hope I can get to Jo-Ann this week!

  12. Hahaha! Love this. I work at Joann and saw these a few months ago. I decided to wait for a coupon and of course we didn't get them in again until recently. Good thing I work tomorrow...

  13. This is great... I have a ton of MAC shadows and blushes (housed in big MAC palettes) that I need a "travel" style palette that I can just mix and match the stuff I want to have with me for that day or use for the week...etc. I'm ordering one from Amazon (was already placing an order, so perfect timing)!

  14. That is a great idea. Wonder if Hobby Lobby or Michaels has something similar. Even if you don't want to depot it's nice to have for products that are sold in pans.

I use CD cases and double sided tape. Cheap, very nice to store and label, transparent. No hassle at all just pop the insert out, takes two seconds. The only hard part was finding old fashioned fat CD cases (Office Depot). The shadows are secure but can be removed if I need to. I took one to Sally's with me one time to buy some more of their single shadows and make sure I didn't get duplicates.. dropped it on the concrete floor. Nothing moved, nothing broke.

  16. Also if you want a real z palette looking on tkbranding sells a "kit" of 2 for 19 dollars with stickers or without the stickers 2 for 15 :)

  17. This is such a cool idea! Thank you for posting this! :)

  18. I have done this it works well but you do need to get the magnetin strips for some items.

  19. I'm not finding these have any magnetic properties, am I doing something wrong...? I depotted my WnW shadows in them.

  20. Dang, I wish that came in other colors. I love the idea. I'm just not a pink kind of woman.

  21. I bought this palette at Joanns a couple of weeks ago and here's what I did to make this work.

    1. Remove the white paper on top of the magnet. It gives a "cleaner" look when the powder strays and it makes the magnet stronger.

    2. Use thin magnetic adhesive sheets on the back of your pans. I bought this at Walmart: http://www.craftprojectideas.com/index.php/products/basic-elements/magnets/53-magnetic-sheets

    3. Do not use the thicker magnets on the back of your pans. I found these did not stick as well.

    Good luck!

  24. I highly recommend the MAC Pro Palettes. They are only $8 and the website has free shipping with no minimums. They are very professional looking and hold a LOT! I have two of the large duo palettes. One caveat, I feel they are too large and heavy for travel.

  26. Thanks so much for posting this I had a few loosies that needed a protective housing and didnt feel like spending alot on a palette. Going to my Jo anns today!

  27. ooh thanks for the scoop though if u try and purchase via Amazon its only $4.99 if you buy it with a $25 purchase.

  28. I just ordered from amazon. i'm prime, but these didnt ship for free unless I had 25.00. I'm perplexed about that. Anyway, Now I have to figure out how to depot because I have a bunch of Wet and Wild that I'd like to do.

  29. If anyone orders online, code SRBR122 gets you 60% off one. Just grabbed two of them for $8.99! Great deal!

  30. I am not part of the #TeamDepot, but after seeing the pics above I am inspired to try depotting a few of my eyeshadows. I know I have a 20% off Joann's coupon somewhere that I can use on this magnetic case.

  31. I went to hobby lobby today and bought 2 of these. They are 7.99 but were on sale for half price!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Our JoAnns honored the online price after we pulled it up on a phone. They honored it as a "competitor's price," telling us not to expect online pricing in-store. We didn't press our luck with the coupon on top of it.

  33. If anyone is interested, magnetic sheets are a rip off. Go to a home improvement store and buy magnetic vent covers. Insanely cheap, and you get a whole bunch for, like, $5

    ReplyDelete
  34. My local store also had this for reg price $9.99 And they would only honor the $4.99 online price if I could show them the online ad and if it did not show an "online exclusive" price notice. But my cellphone could not load the internet so I didn't buy anything. :/
