The Wednesday Question

What is your skin type and what facial cleanser are you loving the most right now?

I have oily skin and currently I've been testing a few different cleansers which I'll be reviewing soon for you. But recently I was able to get a good deal on another bottle of the Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser and I still love that one as much as I did when I reviewed it back in 2012. It is definitely in my top five cleansers of all time and I've been going back to it quite a bit in between testing various other cleansers. But as we move into cooler weather, it will be time to bust out my cleansing oils again (I'll be reviewing another one very soon).

  1. I am 31, sensitive, oily as heck, and acne prone. I've been using and loving trader joes nourish for about a year. I will drive 2 hours to get it when I run out lol. (Well...to get that and cookie butter 😉)

    1. I picked up a bottle to try it after reading this, and so far so good! I have combination skin and I've noticed my forehead doesn't get as shiny during the day.

  2. My current facial cleanser is the First Aid Beauty Skin Rescue Deep Cleanser with Red Clay. I got it in one of my ipsy bags and I was so surprised how much I love it! I have combination skin so I need something that would clean away the dirt and oil well without drying my skin out. The basic Clean and Clear scrub as well as the Apricot one from St. Ives are still my favorites though. I prefer facial scrubs over cleansers in general.

  3. My skin is mostly normal, but it gets pretty dry in winter, especially once I hit my mid-30s. I'm not too loyal to any one cleanser. A lot of time I'll go for a moisturizing bar with ingredients like honey and chamomile or calendula. Sometimes I'll use a lavender-infused oil or jojoba to remove makeup. Or I'll use something like Cetaphil. I mainly look for stuff that doesn't have added fragrance and won't leave my skin feeling stripped.

  4. Hi G! this is my second tme commenting, not sure if my last attempt did not go through. Apologies if it shows up twice, but my skin is combination with an oily t-zone and some dryness in my cheeks, and my morning cleanser is the MB enzyme cleansing gel. for nighttime i take off makeup with neutrogena wipes and then cleanse with a salicylic acid cleanser or the MB glycolic foaming cleanser. I've also recently been using the Josie maran cleansing oil at night and i LOOOOVE how it makes my skin glow and feel like velvet, LOVE LOVE LOVE!! haha

  5. My skin is dry and I use the Garnier cleansing oil you reviewed a while back for makeup removal and Lush Angels on Bare Skin for exfoliating.

  7. I have combination skin that veers combination/oily or combination/dry depending on the weather. For a few blissful days a year, my skin is more normal. They are days I live for. My favourite cleanser of the moment is Shiseido perfect whip foam cleanser (just got off holiday). But now that I'm home it's more like DHC deep cleansing oil.

  8. Got an outstanding facial today and my aesthetician recommended Cetaphil Oil Control (with the purple label). I only used it once today and it felt pretty good, not drying or oily. She said foaming face washes are the best for oily skin.

  9. I have super oily and acne prone skin. I've noticed that as I get older, my skin reacts better to natural and/or organic products. I currently use SoapBox All Natural Bar Soap with African Shea Butter & Sea Salt Black Soap. It is amazing! It keeps my acne at bay and really gets the oil and dirt out of my skin. After I wash my skin, I use Dickinson's witch hazel toner, then Simple Ultra-light Gel Facial Moisturizer.

Two to three times a week, I do use a homemade facial scrub. It includes Organic brown sugar, raw natural honey, Trader Joe's Tea tree oil, Trader Joe's Vitamin E, and juice squeezed from a lemon. I wash my face with my soap, then do the scrub. The scrub is so moisturizing that I don't have to apply a moisturizer after I scrub. When I tell you that my skin has changed drastically since using this! It looks brighter, less breakouts, and I've even noticed that my makeup application is easy and stays on longer. Try it out!

PS I apologize for the long comment, but this one just spoke to me! Lol

  10. Garnier Nourishing Cleansing Oil for my dry, aging skin. I found out about it here and just love it! It removes all my makeup and doesn't leave my skin tight! I actually purchased Palmer"s Cleansing Gel and do not like it at all. I didn't even finish the bottle.

  11. My skin is dry/sensitive and at the moment I'm using Philosophy but since I'm almost out I'll be returning to Cetaphil. I'm going to try the body wash for my face instead of the facial cleanser this time because I've heard people say the body wash is even gentler on your face.

  12. I have acne prone oily skin, and there are tons of products on the market for acne. However, my skin is terribly sensitive and everything burns it! I used to use the Clinique 3 Step, but my skin can't handle the toner anymore! It burns so bad! Also, I can't use much of Neutrogena's products anymore, anything with grapefruit scent burns. I had to throw out all my acne washes and all my burts bees grapefruit wipes and go back to basics.
I am on doxycycline pills for acne, and epiduo, so my skin is super sensitive. I really love the Clearisil Hydra Blast wash now! It's really creamy, like Pond's cream, and it foam up really well. I just splurged on CeraVe fash wash... we'll see how it works. Also, I've tried Cetaphil, and it makes my skin soft, but also leaves it oily. Any suggestions for gentle, acne washes?

    1. I have a few suggestions, if I may...one would be the Dr. Bronner's liquid castile soap in baby mild formula. You mentioned that you like Cetaphil but that it leaves you oily, have you seen the Cetaphil for oily skin? The packaging is very similar but is says for oily skin and is a gel as opposed to lotion based. Most stores sell the "compare to" versions of both, so that's an option too (Whole Foods makes their own and the brand is called 365.) Another is a recent fav of mine, it's by Palmer's and it comes in a clear bottle w a peachy coloured pump, not sure of the exact name (sorry I'm not home now) but I think it has the word sensitive on it. You really want a wash that does just that, something that simply cleanses and doesn't treat as your using some heavy duty stuff for that anyway. Oh, I just remembered another good one, it's a facial cleanser by Sebamed,

    2. Super-duper oily here, I mean I could go into bussiness with Crisco, no joke! My staple for years (and I always go back) has been Dr. Bronner's liquid castile (all varities except almond work wonders for me.) Thing is, I'm always game for trying new things and so quite often I change it up. Lately I've found some othere washes that I just LOVE! Palmer's makes a gel cleanser in a clear bottle w a peach coloured pump (sorry don't have exact name on me) and it worked great for me. I forgot to mention that besides being dreadfully oily, I do get the monthly hormonal spot or two which is totally okay by me since many yrs ago I suffered terrible (mostly cheek) acne.

  13. I have dry skin and I don't think anything will ever compare to my Olay Gentle Foaming Cleanser. I honestly have no idea why they call it a foaming cleanser, because it is a cream texture. I use it as a makeup remover and facial cleanser, because I can't be bothered with an additional step. It's the best!

  14. Combination skin. I use the CVS knock off of Olay Total Effects Revitalizing Foaming Cleanser. Excellent value with 2 for 1 offer and product is amazing.

  15. I have combination (super oily t-zone and extra dry cheeks), mildly sensitive, and acne prone (mainly hormonal, cystic-like acne along my right jawline) skin. I never thought I'd still be battling acne in my mid-30s! I'm currently on my second tube of Alba Botanica Good & Clean Gentle Acne Wash and I love it. It has 1% salicylic acid and I've noticed that my hormonal breakouts aren't as bad and are happening with less frequency.

Also, twice a week, in the shower, I've been using St. Ives Pink Lemon and Mandarin Orange scrub. It's very creamy and gentle, so it doesn't give me the amount of exfoliation I prefer. I've been following it up with Freeman Charcoal and Black Sugar mask. I use the Freeman mask opposite of how the instructions say to use it, though - I use it as a scrub first and then once the sugar is dissolved, I let it sit for 10-15 minutes while I finish up my shower.

My skin looks better now than it has in years.

  16. I have sensitive, dehydrated skin and I love the Ultra Gentle cleanser, too! I use creamy baby oil to remove heavy makeup, then wash with the cleanser once to remove most of the oil, a 2nd time with the Clarisonic, and if the Clarisonic comes back super dirty, a 3rd time with a baby washcloth. It's the one thing that doesn't dry out my skin. If it was a super light makeup day or no makeup day, the baby washcloth is enough with 1 wash. :)
