Review: The Body Shop Colour Crush Eyeshadow in Chocolate Linger

A few months ago when The Body Shop was running one of their 40% off sitewide sales (which happen quite frequently), I was about $5 shy from qualifying for free shipping. So I decided to toss one of the newer shades in the Color Crush eyeshadow line in my cart (these retail for $10 but since I got it during a 40% off sale I only paid $6 for it). To tell you the truth, I wasn't really expecting much from this shadow, but it turned out to be quite the little gem. Take a look!

NOTE: As of the time of this post, The Body Shop is not running a 40% off sitewide sale, however they are running a promotion where you can get B3G2FREE, B2G1FREE or BOGO1/2OFF sitewide.

The Colour Crush line contains a whopping 33 shades which you can view HERE.

An intensely pigmented, pearlescent or matte eyeshadow (dependent on color) with a silky-soft texture. It’s easy to blend and great for building layers of color.

In the pan, this shadow looks like a cool taupe in certain lights, but more neutral in others. But when swatched, there's a warmth that comes out:

To get a better idea of this shade, I thought it might be helpful swatch it next to some other neutral taupe/browns:

Urban Decay Rewind, The Body Shop Chocolate Linger, Urban Decay Naked
(all colors swatched over primer)

As you can see, Chocolate Linger is right in the middle between the two. This is great for me personally, because sometimes I feel like UD Rewind is too dark for certain looks, while UD Naked is too light. This really is right in the middle between the two.

Texture and consistency: I have owned probably a hundred or more matte eyeshadows over the course of my life, both high-end and drugstore, and the texture of this one is up there with the best of them. It's not grainy, chalky or patchy--it is very smooth (but not quite as buttery as UD Rewind). In terms of fallout, it's about the same as what you get with UD mattes. It's not excessive, but there is a little bit of powder in the pan when you're picking up color with your brush (this is just the nature of matte shadows).

Pigmentation and blendability: Without primer, you will have to build for intensity (which I totally expected given the shade of this shadow). But when worn over primer, the pigmentation is fantastic and I love how easily, and smoothly, it blends. I've been wearing this both as an all-over color and also in the crease, paired with a cream matte, and I love it both ways. The color doesn't become muddy when you layer it on top of other colors, and it really does blend effortlessly.

Staying power: Without primer, I can get about 4 hours of wear before I start to see significant fading. But I always prefer to wear my shadows with primer and this one performs beautifully over primer. I can easily get a full eight hours of wear, no problem. I've even gone ten hours and the color is still hanging in there.

Fragrance: I detect no fragrance to this eyeshadow.

FINAL VERDICT: If you're looking for a warm-leaning matte taupe for your crease or to use as an all-over eye color, I don't think you can go wrong with The Body Shop Chocolate Linger. This shadow far exceeded my expectations in every category, and I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to grab more shades during the next sale (which is always right around the corner when it comes to The Body Shop). For me personally, this is one of those "just right" shades because it's not too dark and it's not too light, which makes it ideal for all sorts of uses (I bet it would even work as a brow shade if this was a good color-match for your brows). Chocolate Linger is pretty close to perfect for me, and I hope it will be for you if you give it a try!

  1. I own the same shade it's a great color to define the crease. Also, I have it in golden girl (very beautiful to brighten the inner corners of your eyes).

  3. It's not the most exciting shade, but I bet it looks great on the eyes. It's one of those colors that you just can't go wrong with.
