Physicians Formula: Five Products, Five Mini Reviews

A few months ago, I received an assortment of products by Physicians Formula for review. I've been testing these products out for over two months now and, instead of reviewing each one separately, I thought it might be fun to give you an at-a-glance overview of each product all within the same blog post. I was originally going to post this in a few weeks, but I sped things up since Physicians Formula is one of the brands that's 40% off this week at Ulta (and also on sale at Rite Aid and CVS) now through tomorrow (10/4). For more info on those sales, click here.

Physicians Formula Nude Wear Glowing Nude Blush in Rose

Rose

This cool-toned pink blush is best reserved for those with pale and very fair skintones, or those looking for a just very subtle wash of color. The pigmentation of this blush is definitely not as strong as other Physicians Formula blushes I've used over the years. I am a MAC NC20 and I have to build quite a bit for intensity. The silver lettering on the face of this blush is an overspray, so in time the shimmer and sparkle fade away and you're left with blushes that have a matte finish. It doesn't take long for the overspray to fade, so if you're looking for a matte blush, you'll get it pretty quickly. The formula is a bit on the powdery/chalky side, but this blush does blend in a nice, even manner. For me personally, this is more of a highlighter type of product and I find myself using it that way when I just want some subtle, all-over color to my face. There is no fragrance to this blush.

Physicians Formula Nude Wear Glowing Nude Powder in Medium
(retail: $14.95, 0.24 oz)

Medium

The face powder version of the blush I just showed you, this product has the same silver overspray that delivers some shimmer and sparkle the first few times you use it. After a few uses, the overspray pretty much disappears. The texture of this powder is a lot creamier than the blush (no chalkiness here), but the pigmentation is about the same. In other words, this is a sheer face powder and I cannot use it to conceal any flaws, even redness, etc. There's no coverage here, but it does do a nice job at oil control and keeping my shine at bay for a few hours. I like the way this powder sets my makeup, and I like that it makes me look like I'm not really wearing powder at all, while it also gives my skin a lovely, soft glow. I like this one more than I thought I would, and Medium is a nice color-match for my skintone. If you're drawn to delicate face powders that can enhance the look of your skin without providing any coverage, this might be worth a shot. There is no fragrance to this powder.

Physicians Formula The Bombshell Collection
Powder Palette Multi-Colored Custom Blush for Blondes

For Blondes

Full disclosure: I adore the original Powder Palette Blushes (the matte ones) so I was really excited to try one of these new versions. I rarely, if ever, pay attention to labels that say "for blondes," "for green eyes," etc. and I don't think that should stop you from trying either shade in this range. That said, what might stop you is that this blush is packed with silver glitter (sorry you can't really see that in my swatches). During application, glitter flies all over the place for me, and it's difficult to control. Once things settle down, this blush delivers a sheer wash of peachy-pink color to my skin and it has a nice sheen (in addition to the glitter), but I definitely have to build for more intensity. I don't find the pigmentation to be on the same level as the original Powder Palette Blushes, and that does make me sad because the packaging is so darned cute. Unless you have very pale/fair skin, this blush would probably be best used as an all-over highlighter if you're looking to bring some warmth and sparkle to your skin. There is no fragrance to this blush.

Physicians Formula Super CC Color Correction + Care CC Cream SPF30 in Light

Light

This CC cream reminds me very much of some of my beloved Korean BB Creams in terms of coverage and formula. Some of you asked what I was wearing during the big heat wave here in Southern California a few weeks ago (when I said I was so miserable that I would just slap on a BB cream, a little blush and that's it). Well, THIS is the product. This CC cream manages to cover most of my skin's flaws and it really evens out my skin in a way that I don't get with some other US BB/CC creams. It blends easily, it feels nice on the skin and it delivers enough moisture to my oily skin so that I can easily skip moisturizer when I wear it. I love that this is SPF30, and layering it with the SPF30 Powder (see below) is a nice bonus in terms of protection. The wear-time of this CC cream is also impressive, and I love that after about six hours (in hot weather) when this starts to wear down, it still looks natural (not patchy or weird). The ONLY issue I have with this CC cream is that the color is a tad dark for my NC20 skintone once it adjusts, but toning it down with the "Light" powder (below) seems to work well for me. This product does not oxidize on me, and it has not caused me any breakouts. It also removes easily with my regular facial cleanser. I didn't think PF could top their Organic Wear CC Cream, but I think I might prefer this one a tad bit more. This product doesn't have any fragrance, but there's a natural scent to it that sort of reminds me of what mascara smells like (but it's very subtle).

Light

I have oily skin and I usually go for powders that give me a very matte finish, because I know that the matte finish will quickly turn into a "natural" finish once my skin's oils kick in. That said, I love this powder. It goes on quite matte and the shade "Light" does look a bit pale on me at first, but it somehow adjusts to my skintone after about 30 minutes of wear and then it looks quite natural. I'm not sure how this product might work for those with dry skin, but I can confirm that it's excellent for my oily skin. It does a great job at keeping shininess at bay for several hours before I need to touch up, and I love that it actually does seem to give my skin a hint of extra brightness. It doesn't give a ton of coverage, but it does cover some of my skin's flaws; it mostly just evens things out. I've been wearing this over the CC cream above and I absolutely love that combo. One warning though: like many other PF powders, this product can get extra powdery and it kicks up fallout when you're swirling your brush and applying to your face. If you're OK with that, I think it's worth a shot. I also love that it contains SPF30 (I would never rely solely on this powder for sun protection, but it's a nice added bonus). There is no fragrance to this powder.

I hope this post helps give you a better idea of what these Physicians Formula products have to offer. If you've tried anything featured here, I would absolutely love to hear from you! Please share your experiences below.

  1. Great review! I am also very disappointed with those PF powders and blushes. I immediately returned the ones I bought! They are fairly useless. They are good for anyone with perfect skin who just want a touch of extra radiance.LOL. But I do use the PF Organic CC Cream and I will use NOTHING else. It is amazing. And it's the first drugstore (foundation, CC/BB that does not oxidize on me and look terrible after a few hours!). I just love it! That CC cream and powder looks good too! I'm tempted to try the powder (I have oily skin like yourself).

    1. Thank you!

I like what you said about the powder...it really does give a touch of radiance but unless you already have really good skin, that might not be enough. I too adore the Organic Wear CC cream so I would love to know if you agree that the Super CC is even a tad better. If you end up getting it, plus keep me posted? Thanks!!

  2. This is a great little round-up review! I've always been interested in Physician Formula products but I never tried it because I felt like they were too expensive for drugstore (and lots of products I felt I could get for comparable quality at a lower price, or just spend a bit more and get something from Sephora). That BB cream looks really promising though and I will definitely put it on my list!

For me, PF is definitely a line that merits some exploring! :) The great thing is that their products constantly go on sale at the drugstores and Ulta, so you'll never have to pay full price. :)

  3. I kept the FOR BLONDES blush but also realized it didn't give enough color punch. I repurchased the original blushes.. they don't have the same deep color anymore... but I kept them too.. oil free all the way for a so I'm limited.

    Thanks for the reviews.

    1. You're very welcome!

I'm sorry to hear you had the same issue with the blush. And regarding the original ones, I stocked up a while back when CVS was having one of their clearance sales, so I haven't purchased one recently. I'll have to pick one up to compare. Thanks!

  5. PF is one of the only DS brands that actually have really great BB/CC creams. I'll definitely be picking this one up! Thanks for the review!

  6. I might have to try the CC cream once some of my current stash runs out. That looks pretty good. The blushes/highlighters, though, don't seem to have a lot of color payoff. I have that cream highlighter quad from ELF, which I still prefer to everything else I have of that ilk. But a good CC cream ... I'm always on the prowl.

  7. Another great review! I ran out and snagged the cc cream and powder from Ulta yesterday. Also thanks to you, I used the 3.50 coupon. I got both for about $10! I wore them today and I'm pretty impressed. No oxidation!!! I did a lot of running around and I'm very surprised how well it managed my oily skin. You rock, G! Thank you.

  8. Funny that I came across this today. I just bought from Walmart yesterday a kit with the CC cream, concealer, and powder for $19.99. I used them all this morning. I got Light/Medium (the only color they had in a kit) and the CC cream is a bit dark for me as well (I am NC15) but I blended well and had no trouble. Considering each item is about $13 each at Walmart, I thought $20 was a steal for all three!

    1. I got the same kit from Target. They had both the BB and the CC in a kit for $19.99, Super great deal!
