The Wednesday Question: Makeup Newbie Edition

Name three drugstore beauty products that you would recommend to a makeup newbie.

There are so many, but I think I would start with:

1) e.l.f. Studio Small Stipple Brush (great for powders, foundations, blushes, cream blushes, highlighters, etc.)

2) Either Milani Eyeshadow Primer or Wet n Wild Fergie Eyeshadow Primer (I adore them both)

3) Essence Lash Mania Reloaded Mascara (as I mentioned in my review, I believe this is one of the best universal mascaras around and great for all lash types)

  1. 1. Jordana Best Lash Extreme Mascara - It's 3 dollars, it gives you length and volume, and it's formula is easy to use. It's not waterproof, but that means less rubbing to get it off at the end of the day and just a few extra checks in a mirror.

    2. A nude lipstick like Rimmel London Let's Get Naked - Simple, creamy, lasts a while, and if you aren't an expert at applying lipstick it's forgiving.

    3. Brow Pencil. There are a lot to choose from, but right now I'm liking NYX Auto Eyebrow Pencil. Easy to apply, blends out with the brush to get rid of harsh lines ,and takes almost no time at all.

  2. I definitely agree with the Fergie primer! And elf has so many great brushes. (Though I tend to like their eye brushes more than their face brushes.)

I'd go for the brows-lips-lashes "holy trinity", get them comfortable with defining those areas well before moving in to really have fun with eyeshadows and foundations:
    1. Rimmel ScandalEyes Kohl in either brown or taupe - sold as "eyeliner", but work great as brow pencils as well. (The whole line is excellent, really...)
    2. Revlon Colorstay Balmstain in Honey (any of them, but Honey is such a great versatile color that looks good on so many skintones.)
    3. CoverGirl LashBlash Length

(Then if I could add a fourth and a fifth I'd go for Fergie eyeshadow primer and Maybelline's color tattoos.)

  3. I think the new Maybelline nudes palette is perfect for a beginner. It's easy to work with, has all the shades you need for complete eye looks, and is cheap. If you have the money (wait for a sale, they go 50% off frequently) the ELF studio brush set is a great starter set. The Sonia Kashuk economy line is great as well. Ecotools sells a dual ended eye brush set that has everything you need for eyes, it's about $6. If you apply your foundation with fingers you really only need one face brush (just buff it clean on a towel between products), the Ecotools blush brush would be a good one. I'm a big fan of the Rimmel matte BB, it's about $5 and has very good pigmentation and fantastic staying power. I second the suggestion of WnW eye primer. Jordana has very good blushes, liners, eye crayons, and lip products cheap. Kmart has the best selection in my area.

  4. According to Robyn from Brightest Bulb in the Box, the NYX HD High Definition Eyeshadow Base is actually equivalent to LORAC's Behind the Scenes Primer (which I can also second!) so I would HIGHLY recommend it to a newbie (and, really, everyone)!

  5. ELF eyeshadow primer, Miss Manga mascara, and I can agree with your ELF Stipple brush. Even though I don't use it for all those reasons, the fact that it can be is excellent.

  6. Talking about newbie in makeup, it just hit me: about a year ago I started to get obsessed with nail polish! Although I've always been obsessed with eyeshadows.

  7. Wow so many and hard to narrow down!
    1) Ecotools brush set- easy to clean, excellent quality, good price
    2) Wet n' Wild or Milani eyeshadow primer
    3) Wet n' Wild Color Icon eyeshadow (either a single or a palette)

  8. 1. Nivea kiss of care tinted lip balm (the one w/ the clear core) I could put it on w/out a mirror! Ps- I found a newish shade at Ulta last month, think its called Caramel.
    2. I agree w/ G.'s #2 chioce...those are my fav eye primers too, Fergie WNW being 1st choice imo
    3. An eyelash curler, and since it is really a tool imma cheat and through in somethin' else...the elf studio mascara with the ball tip...only $3usd and really is one of the best I've ever tried (elf never wowed me w/ mascara prior.)

  9. OK, here goes...

    1) NAIL POLISH TOP COAT: NYC Grand Central Station. Cost: $1-2. Apply while colored polish is wet. Reapply every 1-2 days. Stock up during sales (BOGO free & 40% off). You won't regret it.

    2) EYESHADOW PRIMER: ELF, cost: $1. I haven't used the other ones mentioned here, but this is cheap and does the job. Once you use primer you will never go back.

    3) MASCARA: NYC, cost: $2-4, most are cheap and effective, and some are fantastic. Experiment for yourself. I'm not likely to ever go back to Maybeline or Loreal.

  12. Oops I don't think my first comment posted!

    Anyway, my top 3 are

    1. Maybelline Color Tattoos. I own almost every color and they are a god send lol. Dramatic Black from the new leathers collection is excellent as an eyeliner. LE Nude Pink is the perfect eye-shadow base. LE Nude Compliment is great as a one-eyeshadow look. Seriously, these babies are still going strong 14 hours on me.

    2. L'oreal Miss Manga Mascara. I've heard mixed reviews on this, but for me it's absolutely HG status. Hands down my favorite mascara! No clumps and my lashes look amazing. Looks great with Jordana Best Lash mascara!

    3. Revlon Colorburst Lipgloss. I have almost every color of these too! Great pigmentation, not super sticky, and great colors to choose from.

  13. 1. Milani liquid eye liner pencil. I'm often reaching for this instead of my UD 24/7 glide-on eye pencil. I think it's much smoother!
    2. Wet N Wild Color Icon eye shadow palette in Comfort Zone. One of my faves!

  14. Man, I wouldn't know where to start. I'd probably ask the newbie what they want their makeup to do, and go from there. If they want a bit of polish and then be ready to go, then just a BB cream, mascara and tinted lip balm, and depending on whether they want unscented/scented, long or voluminous lashes, we'd go from there. I would want the newbie to know that they can return stuff to drugstores, though, so if they hate it they don't have to keep it, and encourage them to take advantage of sales and don't be afraid to experiment. It's makeup; it washes off!

  15. 1. Wet 'n Wild Megalast lipsticks, there's a shade for everyone from the natural nudes to vampy shades. They're very pigmented and last long. And if you use a lip balm before applying they won't be as drying.

    2. Maybelline Lash Discovery or Full N Soft layered with L'Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black

    3. NYX powder blush

  16. 1. Wet n Wild definitely!! The walking on eggshells palette is their best one!! The pink color works as a beautiful eyeshadow and my fave use is as a highlight...the brown color looks beautiful in the crease even though it looks shimmery

    2. Rimmel London lip liners in mauve shimmer and tiramisu...great under nude lipsticks!!

    3. My beloved Covergirl clump crusher mascara and now my bombshell maacara...they are the best!!

  17. For amazing lashes I would recommend L'oral Voluminous mascara. For a full coverage and long wear foundation Revlon color stay. And for blushes I would recommend Milani's makeup line because they have beautiful baked blushes and bronzers.

  18. 1. wet n wild comfort zone palette
    2. maybelline rocket volum express mascara
    3. covergirl outlast 3 in1 foundation

  19. My choices would be:

    1. 11-piece brush set from eBay - it has every brush a newbie could ever need
    2. 88 Warm palette - neutrals shades are very beginner-friendly
    3. Wet N Wild Megalast lipstick - it's affordable and easily-available
