Swatches & First Impressions: Wet n Wild Summer 2014 Limited Edition Summer Festival Collection

Here's a look at what the Wet n Wild Summer 2014 Summer Festival Collection has to offer!

To give you an idea of what the actual displays look like, in case you haven't seen them at your local Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens, etc. yet, here are some promo images:

Thank you to everyone who submitted pics to me of the above displays--I received several submissions while I was on a break from the blog last month and I wish I could feature them all. Thanks again to everyone who took the time to share!

There is also a separate display for the limited edition brushes and sharpeners--many thanks to reader Ida for this pic of the display she spotted last week:

Wet n Wild Summer 2014 Limited Edition Eye Love L.A. Collection

I received both of the limited edition brushes and dual sharpener for review, but I did not receive the limited edition Under the Sheets Makeup Towlettes. If you have tried the towelettes, I'd love to know what you think of them!

So let's start with the trios:

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Overall, there is much improvement here from some previous limited edition trios. I didn't have to use any special techniques (like the ones I suggested in my review of the Spring 2013 Pop Art Craze Trios) to apply any of these shades. Speaking of the Pop Art Craze trios, I do see some shade similarities in this new collection, but none of these trios look to be exact dupes for the Pop Art Craze Trios. Most of the colors in this new collection are quite vibrant over primer, with a nice, smooth, creamy consistency. I didn't find a dry, hard or overly-chalky one in the bunch, but a few shades are a bit powdery and kick up some fallout during application. In the majority of these trios, the bottom shade in particular is quite reminiscent of the old-style Coloriocon Trios that we all love so much (buttery texture and great color payoff). If you were disappointed in previous limited edition trios, these will probably feel like a breath of fresh air to you, as Wet n Wild seems to have improved the formula. (By the way, I'm not alone in this opinion--I've seen many Wet n Wild fans on Instagram say the same thing.)

MY PICKS: Sun-Set to See and Standing My Camp-Ground!.

Wet n Wild Eyeshadow Brush (blue)
Angled Eyeshadow Brush (pink)
Dual Pencil Sharpener

Apologies--I don't have pricing for these as of the time of this post, but I am guessing they're all in the $1 - $2.99 range.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: As is the case with some other brushes that have dyed bristles, the blue brush required two washings before the blue dye stopped bleeding. The pink brush actually didn't bleed at all, even on the first washing. I find the blue brush to be a bit softer than the pink brush, but overall these are neither super prickly nor super soft. They're pretty much in the middle. These brushes haven't shed for me in the two times I've washed them, but they do have that signature scent that you find with some other animal hair brushes. The blades on the Dual Pencil Sharpener are pretty sharp. But if you're sharpening pencils that are encased with black material instead of wood, be aware of this:

For me, it feels like the black material on these types of pencils "catches" on the blade and it makes them a little bit difficult to pull out of the sharpener itself. Notice in the pic above that the "lead" in this pencil was sort of pulled out a bit from the pencil itself. As for the blade, you can see that this sharpener does sharpen to a nice, narrow point, even on creamier pencils.

Wet n Wild Summer 2014 Limited Edition Summer Festival Megaslicks Balm Stains
(retail: $2.99 each)

Tangerine and Tribal (top)
Festival Fashionista (bottom)

Tangerine and Tribal (left)
Festival Fashionista (right)

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Oddly enough, Tangerine and Tribal (the lighter shade of the two in the tube) appears darker on my skin. Tangerine and Tribal is a coral-pink creme with a lipstick-like opacity and it leaves a light pink stain behind as it wears away. Festival Fashionista is a peachy-orange with a slight pink undertone and it has more of a sheer, tinted-lip-balm type of finish. It does not leave a stain behind--it behaves more like a tinted lip balm and it doesn't have the staying power of  Tangerine and Tribal.

MY PICKS: It really depends on what type of lip colors you generally prefer. If you favor coral-pink opaque cremes, get Tangerine and Tribal. If you favor peachy-orange sheer washes of color, get Festival Fashionista.

Wet n Wild Summer 2014 Limited Edition Summer Festival Wild Shine Nail Colors
(retail: $0.99 each)

Wheel Romance, Spitfire, Chambray Showers
NOT PICTURED: Gyp-Sea Green

NOTE: There is a fourth shade in this collection called Gyp-Sea Green, which I did not receive for review.

Chambray Showers (two coats)
Spitfire (two coats)
Wheel Romance (three coats)

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: I was SO excited to see Chambray Showers because it totally reminds me of the Limited Edition shade Bird Bath (from the Wet n Wild Spring 2011 Limited Edition Bloom Collection, which is still one of my favorite WnW collections of all time). I'm not sure if Chambray Showers is an exact dupe (I blew through my bottle of Bird Bath long ago so I can't compare them for you) but I know it is close. And, just like Bird Bath, it only requires two coats for good opacity. That's rare for a baby blue creme, right?  As for Spitfire, JELLY ALERT! This is a lovely orangey-tomato-red jelly that only needs two coats for great opacity. If you loved Contact High (the green jelly from the Summer 2014 Limited Edition Megalast Collection), you'll probably love this one too. I can't wait to do a jelly sandwich with it. Wheel Romance is a light coral-pink creme and while it did require three coats for good opacity, the formula was easy to work with. This is the kind of color that tends to look amazing on tanned skin and those with deeper skintones.

MY PICKS: At this price, I say grab all three.

I hope that this post gives you a better idea of what the Wet n Wild Summer 2014 Collections have to offer. I'm seeing these displays pop up more and more as the weeks go by, so if you haven't seen them at your local Rite Aid, Walgreens, CVS, Kmart, etc. yet, keep checking back because they might pop up soon. And don't forget that the Fall 2014 Collections are now starting to make an appearance (I've heard from readers who have spotted the limited edition 5-pans and the limited edition nail colors and lipsticks at both Kmart and Walgreens so far).

Do you already own any of the Wet n Wild Summer 2014 Collection products? I'd love to hear how they're working for you. And thanks again to reader Ida for the pic of the brush display!

  4. I have gyp-sea green and looooove it. It's a green but teal but blue toned creme. I have many similar but it's quite unique! I also bought Ferris-Wheel Romance (the orangey cream np). I've been using both a lot with Sinful Bright Lucite.

    1. So I hit up 2 Rite Aids yesterday day and Kmart. I found all the shadows but no lipstick and nail polish. I was going to buy a shadow but couldn't decide which one so I left empty handed. The hunt continues.

  9. I've been keeping an eye open for the display with the nail polishes and lippies, only to find one picked-clean one (with different nail polishes thrown into the mix, just to fill the display). I picked up the No Scalpers shadow trio, though. Mainly for that pretty periwinkle shade. I've been debating getting more but now that I've seen those five-pans for fall, I'm waiting for those.

  10. To soften animal hair brushes, use conditioner. :3 Yes, the conditioner you slather on your head! Cheap conditioner works JUST FINE. I have cheapie scratchy brushes (fake MAC that are actually pretty dang nice!) from eBay and some from the grocery store, just condition after washing and they soften right up. Sadly, this doesn't work for animal hair kabuki; atleast not the Bare Minerals/Bare Escentuals kabuki in my experience which is goat hair. They make conditioner for pets, so why wouldn't conditioner work on brushes? (Please don't use your conditioner on your pets though—they lick themselves/eachother afterall!)

  11. I want the polishes but no luck! I am so sad because I love the polishes! I also loved last years pop art craze polishes! I love the trios especially the sunset to see and no scalpels allowed. I have been wearing them so much! I can't wait for the 5 pan fall limited edition shadows! Thanks for the review G! This is my very first time commenting on your blog!

    1. I love the Pop art collection polishes too and wondering how this blue compares. Dying to find this blue and the teal/green one, along with the lip balm pencils. I have a couple from when they first came out and holy staining Batman! The darker mauve one especially. Love them <3

  13. Tonight I found picked over dismay at Kmart. All 4 lippies were there... I bought the 2 tangerine ones. The original nail polishes were nearly all gone, but I was able to get the red and the green.

I hit up a rite aid and 2 CVS stores with no luck. My search continues.

  15. The tangerine Lippy is very pink and bright. Odd that it comes out now. I like it, but would have liked to wear it longer. It's a summer color for sure. What a bummer, summer is almost over. I need the other 2 nail polishes.. the blue and pink. Hunting is fun only when you find your prey.
