RIP Sally Hansen Pacific Blue

My dearest nail polish fanatics,

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that our beloved Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Nail Color in Pacific Blue is bidding us a fond farewell. My dear friend Lois of Shades of Beauty Inc. shared THIS PHOTO with me today alerting me to the fact that Sally Hansen Pacific Blue as we know her and love her has changed. Some may say this change is for the better, but many of us loved our dear friend exactly the way she was--an exquisite, vibrant blue creme that spawned countless impersonators since her birth in 2009.

As they say, all good things must come to an end. And that end for Pacific Blue is a transformation into something deeper, darker and with a new-found shimmer (*gasp*). This is not the Pacific Blue that has brought such happiness to my fingers and toes over the years. This is something more akin to, as Lois pointed out, China Glaze Frostbite. Pretty? Yes. But this is not my Pacific Blue.

With that, I offer this condolence. It appears that this metamorphosis is still pretty new--only a few of you have mentioned spotting the new version in the marketplace. So you may be still be able to find back-ups of the original Pacific Blue at your local drugstores. If you find them, buy them. Pacific Blue is wildly popular within the polish community for a reason (just look at the 70+ comments on my Instagram post for proof). It's an exquisite formula and the color is so vibrant and alive...I dare say it's better than any other lookalike out there. It's the original, and it's a must-have for any polish collector.

I leave you with this:

RIP, Pacific Blue. You will be missed.

  1. *pours one out for Pacific Blue* What a bummer! Thanks for the heads up.

Also, that Boyz II Men video killed me. (If you watched "Psych," there was a hilarious episode featuring this song!)

    1. Haha! I loved that episode!

Very sad about Pacific Blue. Why on earth do companies think it's okay to completely change something but keep the same name??

    2. I totally agree with you, at least they could pick a different name :(

  2. What if you already have Essie Butler Please? Still worth it to buy Pacific Blue?

    1. Yes, in my humble opinion, it is. To me, they are different.

  3. SO GLAD I bought it before the change!!

  4. I am so glad that I bought several backups many years ago...

  5. it seems that drugstores in my end of iowa do not carry it as I've checked in walmart, target, ulta, walgreens and cvs and 3 different cities. bummer cause it looks very pretty. what would be an easy to find doupe for it?

    1. Essie's Butler Please is considered a dupe, but I will say that its formula is god-awful. It might be something you want to consider though, if the color is what you're after.

    2. @Jessica Beck, I have a spare if you'd like one. :)

  6. Why is it that some nail polish makers will use the same color and slap a different name on it and others will keep the same name and reformulate? Either way, it isn't very cool!

  7. I do not like the colour blue. I do not own any blue nail polish. I have to say (and have said it before) that Pacific Blue is just gorgeous. If I had to ever wear blue polish it would be this one. After clicking the link for the China Glaze polish I will say this: EWWWWW. lol that's not a formula change or an 'improvement' that is a massacre!!!

  8. I've got a couple Walgreens that are slow to stock...I should be able to grab a couple. Only color of nail polish I have finished the bottle.

  9. Why.....why would they do this to us?

  10. Omg noooo! This is literally my favorite polish ever. This is maddening. I'm gonna need to hunt down at least 3 or 4 or 10 backup bottles...

  11. My CVS has both in stock right now.

  12. I bought some about a month ago, got it home and was very, very confused why what was on my nails looked NOTHING like the swatches I had seen online.

  13. And the new formula is a bit sheer and gloopy. *sadface*

  14. Guess I have to get another back up. I love that color!

  15. This is a shame indeed...glad I own the original. Will have to buy a backup or two. Thanks for the info.

  16. This is the blue I wear to Dodgers games. :-(

  17. I guess I had better make a stop at the drugstore today. I really don't think I have this in my collection. I usually shy away from bright/deep dark blue for fear of staining! I really hate when it happens! But it really is so pretty!

    1. The original version of this blue does not stain at all, it's a very well behaved polish!

  18. Fergie Havasu Blue is a limited edition dupe for PB. Sorry to say I didn't keep PB since the other was cheaper. My stash is chock full of blue polish and I layer anyway, so I don't feel so bad. Just a tiny twinge of remorse that nearly has me going out to buy PB again... but I won't do it... I must be strong!

  19. Hello I follow this blog and I have a bit of news...Today I did find 3 bottles of Pacific Blue(original) and with my QR code the darn things were $1.99..so I went from SOL to sitting pretty. Run to your Nearest Walgreens and with the app you save $$$$

  20. This bites. I have gotten so many compliments on this polish. I love blue and this one rox out loud! I must go finish my tantrum now :'(

  21. My Ulta had two bottles of the original today, so you know I snatched them up!!

  22. I've never even seen Pacific Blue in person :(

    ReplyDelete
  23. Snatched the last one at my Walgreens yesterday!

  24. My local Rite Aid only has the new Pacific Blue now. Walgreens had neither, but my CVS had both with lots of the original PB left and Sally Hansen is BOGO50 this week, so I grabbed two! My Ulta also had two of the original.

  25. THIS IS FLAT OUT RIDICULOUS!!! I really wish to understand why companies do this!!!!!

Ladies, DON'T WAIT to hunt down the originals! People will be cleaning out whatever's left at every drugstore, and the most I personally have seen in one location is four at any given time. Some literally will have one original left behind a bunch of the new formulation. Bend down and look! LOL!

  26. Mellow Yellow has also been changed.... And I hear Coral Reef is heading that direction, too...... :(

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm in Canada, and yesterday hunted down this polish at one of the Shoppers Drug Mart locations in town. First I saw the new version, but digging all of them out rewarded me with several bottled of the original formula behind the new one. (I also have to say, yuck to the new one! I have China Glaze Frostbite and this doesn't look a lot like it, IMO... Frostbite is much nicer!)

So, don't despair if the front bottle is the new one - check the bottles behind it, too.

  28. I snatched the last 3 bottles in my town, a backup of Coral Reef and a bottle of Mellow Yellow. I'm feeling paranoid...may grab a backup of Mint Sorbet just in case <_<

  29. I just bought two bottles of this, and tried it for the first time... I can't believe they changed it! The new version is much less unique. For Twin Cities (MN) nail polish freaks, there are two bottles of original formula left at Walgreens in Burnsville (the one by Target, right across from Burnsville Center.) There was also one left at Burnsville Kmart as of noon 6/22. :)

  30. OMGoodness; after reading this post I had to run to my Helmer and check my SH Pacific Blue. Thankfully, I have the original "real" shade, not the new imposter. Whew, disaster averted. I tried to pick up another bottle today (You know, "a pair and a spare", but neither my local CVS or Walgreen's had any Pacific Blue, new or old! Wake up, Sally!

  31. I looked at HEB, Walgreens, and CVSs in my area for a backup bottle of Pacific Blue, to no avail... I even ordered it online through Ulta to see if they'd send me a new one - another fail. BUT - I went to Big Lots and found a random single bottle of the old school, awesome Pacific Blue in a nail polish bucket. CRAZY but I definitely bought it and am super happy!

  32. It also seems they have changed bubblegum pink, but I liked the change on that one. Not thrilled about pb change

    ReplyDelete
  33. I was so sad to see that they changed the color! The original color was unique, and the new color that they changed it to is a typical royal blue that you can find anywhere! It's really sad they changed the color because it was definitely one of my favorites!
