Breaking Beauty News: L'Oreal to Acquire NYX

In addition to owning Maybelline, Urban Decay, Essie, Garnier, The Body Shop and countless other beauty brands we know and love, cosmetics giant L'Oreal will soon acquire NYX. Over the past few weeks, I've been reading articles indicating that this was going to happen, but it's now official. You can read the entire Bloomberg article here.

  1. I'm disappointed..I've been trying to purchase only cruelty free beauty items and NYX was one of the few remaining cruelty free drugstore brands

    1. I'm not sure if you avoid all L'Oreal brands that are CF (UD, TBS) but if the China issue is your concern, keep checking in with Jen at Mybeautybunny... she's awaiting info about whether they'll sell to China and thus lose their CF status. Hope that helps!

    2. I am with you on that. It was a sad day when Milani and Jordana were no longer CF. The thought of losing Urban Decay and NYX from the CF bunch is rather devastating.

  2. Also very disappointed to hear this. NYX was one of very few cruelty free drug store cosmetic brands left. Guess I'll be sticking with E.L.F and Physician's Formula.

  3. I'm excited about this. I'm hoping this means NYX products will become more available in my area. The closest ULTA is an hour away, and our CVS {and other drugstores people claim they find NYX in} doesn't carry the brand. I'm looking forward to seeing NYX in a drugstore near me!

  4. Very happy, just "discovered" NYX thru your blog and I'm very impress with their quality and beautiful colors. :-)

  5. This is interesting! L'Oréal is really becoming a monopoly. Like the Comcast of the beauty industry.

    1. I agree. It is really awful that all these massive brands are buying every single company out there. In the end we suffer with lousy products and higher prices.

  6. i hope this means nyx will become more readily available. I can still get them at ricky's locations in NY, but still, it would be even sweeter if I can just pop to my nearest drugstore for nyx stuff

  7. Sh... Shoot!!! Shoot, that's of course what I meant! It sucks I feel like l'Oréal is going to buy everything lol it was one of the only good cruelty free brand (yeah I know Wet n Wild is still there lol) ...

  8. Wow I had no idea that they owned all those companies!

  9. I think it's a good thing! Loreal has not tried to change the cruelty free status of other companies like Urban Decay.

  10. I always have mixed feeling about small companies being acquired by larger corporations. Yes the products will be at more stores. But, the small company can lose some of it's creative control.

  11. This is not good. :| Urban Decay's prices took a hike when L'Oreal acquired them--I don't think availability will increase, I think NYX's affordable prices will be jacked upwards. The NAKED palette was only $50 when it launched, before L'Oreal. Now that L'Oreal has them under their thumb, the price is up to $54. I'm pretty sure the liquid foundation was $38 at first launch, now it's $39. :| This will also mean lots of people running from NYX like it's a plague, the same way it went with UD due to the China scare (they never sold out for that market, guys. Chill.) and being bought up by L'Oreal. NYX would technically count as an independent brand the way Too Faced is: not owned by a big company, but now that will unfortunately change.

I find it funny that the article mentions "expanding distribution internationally" when there are quite a few Asia-based bloggers who rave over NYX! Expansion could possibly mean they start selling in China and BAM! No more cruelty free AND inexpensive.

    1. There is no indication that L'Oreal is buying out Too Faced. Where did you find that info?

    2. I didn't say Too Faced was being bought nor did I imply it was being bought. I reference Too Faced because they're an indie company, the way NYX was formerly. Now that L'Oreal owns NYX, it's no longer independent of the big brand houses.

  12. I just want to mention that L'Oreal doesn't test on animals anymore -- they mention on their website's FAQ page. They haven't tested products on animals since the 80s, and haven't tested ingredients since March 2013. They do still sell in countries where testing is required (e.g. China), so they aren't "cruelty-free," but I think this isn't information everyone's been privy to! Take it as you will.. personally I will still keep buying L'Oreal and daughter companies' products, but I can understand still being against them since they aren't 100% CF.

  13. Personally I am disappointed. NYX is becoming more and more expensive. A brush cleaner should NOT cost $15. I remember when their products cost as little as 1$. I am just afraid the prices will keep going up :(

  14. I am hoping NYX prices will stay low but I doubt it. I bought my first NYX lipgloss like ten years ago at some clothing store (now closed) for $1.00. I still have it for keepsake...

  15. who cares. i'm glad this may mean i will be able to find NYX in my area. i don't live in a big city. the closest mall or even target is an hour and a half away from me and my local CVS & walgreens don't carry NYX. we just got a CVS and i was thrilled it carries a small selection of milani...

  16. Thanks for the heads up, perhaps this is why I am now seeing nyx products being sold in CVS stores. I'm thinking the have already acquired nyx and maybe the info is only being leaked as a maybe although it has most likely actually happened. It's possible L'Oreal was not ready to tell the public yet in fear that loyalists to nyx cosmetics would drop that brand once they found out. I would not be surprised.
