Review: Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stains in India Intrigue and Barcelona Nights

I think this is the fourth post I've done abut these new lip colors from Revlon, so it's about time I actually reviewed some, right? I found the display (click here to see what it looks like) at Rite Aid about two weeks ago and I picked up a warm pink and cool pink. Let's take a look!

Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stains in India Intrigue and Barcelona Nights
(retail: $9.99 each, 0.27 oz)

The Colorstay Moisture Stains come in twelve shades. I THOUGHT that all of the shades in this range had a creme finish, but that's actually not the case (as you're about to see).

No safety seals, but the stickers are pretty sturdy, so you should be able to tell if one has been partially peeled off/tampered with.

Ingredients: Water, Octyldodecanol, Polyglyceryl-2 Diisostearate, Butylene Glycol, Carthamus Tinctorius Oleosomes (Safflower), Stearyl Alcohol, Alcohol Denat., Ethylcellulose, Acrylates/Ethylhexylacrylate/Hema Copolymer, Cetyl PEG/PPG 10/1 Dimethicone, Hexyl Laurate, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Glycerin, Acrylates/Dimethylaminoethyl Methacrylate/Ethylhexyl Acrylate Copolymer, Xanthan Gum, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Panthenol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Fragrance, BHT, Tetrasodium EDTA, Ethylhexylglycerin, Benzyl Alcohol, 1, 2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Benzyl Benzoate, Limonene, Linalool, Hexyl Cinnamal, May Contain (+/-): Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Red 28 Lake (CI 45410), Red 33 (CI 17200), Yellow 5 Lake (CI 19140), Red 33 Lake (CI 17200), Red 7 Lake (CI 15850), Red 40 (CI 16035), Yellow 5 (CI 19140), Yellow 6 (CI 15985), Red 6 Lake (CI 15850), Blue 1 (CI 42090), Blue 1 Lake (CI 42090), Yellow 6 Lake (CI 15985)

India Intrigue, Barcelona Nights

The applicator is very similar to most of the lipgloss/liquid lipstick/lipstain hybrids we've seen at the drugstores over the last couple of years.

India Intrigue, Barcelona Nights

India Intrigue

India Intrigue is a deep, cool-toned berry that has purple undertones. The photo above was taken after one generous application. This lip color has a creme finish with tiny gold flakes--you can see the flakes a bit better in this close-up:

Barcelona Nights

Barcelona Nights is a warm berry creme. There is no shimmer (or gold flakes) in this one. The photo above was taken after applying a moderate amount of product to my lips. I also took this photo about 30 minutes after application, to show you that there's still a nice amount of shine left after this has been on your lips for a little while.

Texture and consistency: These feel very much like all of the other lipgloss/liquid lipstick/lipstain hybrids on the market. There's a cushiony, slick feeling to these that seems to be quite common with this type of lip color. The consistency is thick but also a bit runny, if that makes sense. These don't apply very evenly--it's difficult to get even coverage the first time you use one, and it take some practice. It's as if, every time you press your lips together, the color ends up more patchy and uneven than before (it should actually be the opposite, right??). The good news is that, after this lip color sits on the lips for a few minutes, things do even out considerably. This product is not sticky on initial application, but after about 20 minutes I find that my lips do feel a tiny bit sticky--but not NEARLY as sticky as other Colorstay long-wear lip colors I've used in the past (I'm looking at you, Colorstay Ultimate Suede Lip Colors).

Pigmentation and staying power: The pigmentation is quite nice on initial application--the two shades I chose are on the bold side, but not outrageously bright. But these do become more sheer after about an hour of wear and they go from looking like a liquid lipstick to a stain. The staying power of the two shades I purchased was decent, but not mind-blowing. I can get about 3-4 hours of wear from these, and the stain lasts for an hour or two after that. What is most surprising about these is that the SHINE lasts a lot longer than I thought it would. I can't get the shine in most of my lip colors to last over an hour, and sometimes I can get almost two hours of shine from this product.

Moisturization:  "Colorstay" is synonymous with "long-wearing" but, unlike some other long-wearing lip colors I've used over the years, these do not have that claustrophobic, suck-all-the-moisture-out-of-your-lips type of feel to them. My lips feel pretty hydrated the entire time that I'm wearing these, and I don't feel any drying effects afterward. I would say that they're probably the most hydrating Colorstay lip colors I've ever worn.

Fragrance and flavor: There is virtually no fragrance to these, but there is a flavor. Upon initial application, I get that sharp, plastic type of flavor that I also get with some other hybrids of this nature. That sharp note does ultimately fade, and what's left behind is a very mild, vanilla-ish floral type of flavor. After about 15 minutes, I don't really detect any flavor at all.

FINAL VERDICT: I went into these hoping they wouldn't be like some other long-wearing lip colors I've owned in the past (heavy, drying and extremely sticky). I'm very happy that these are not too heavy or sticky, and I haven't experienced any drying. However, I'm not sold on the staying power, because I expect more from a Colorstay product. I think that 3-4 hours would be impressive if these were in the Super Lustrous or Colorburst lines, but for Colorstay I expect a minimum of 5-6 hours of wear. Also, application can be a bit finicky until you figure these out (they're not a slap-on-and-go type of product) and that might be frustrating for some. I think Revlon did name these appropriately, though. They have some nice moisture to them, and they do leave a stain behind.. I just wish the stain stuck around a bit longer. If you're looking for a lip color that stays pigmented and opaque for a longer amount of time, I would probably recommend the Wet n Wild Fergie Vicious Varnishes. I'm kind of on the fence about these Moisture Stains--I don't think they're bad, but I'm not itching to buy additional shades.

Do you own any Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stains? I would love to hear how they're working for YOU!

  1. "Moisture Stain" really?

    This is an unappetizing name...

  3. I bought LA Exclusive, which is a light pink and I absolutely love it and it's been the only lip product I have been wearing recently. It's super moisturizing and I am actually looking forward to buying more shades. I bought mine at walgreens.

  4. I bought Barcelona Nights and Cannes Crush last week when Rite Aid had all Revlon lip products for $5.99 . I agree with your review all the way. However with Cannes Crush which is s pinky corally color the stain lasted all day and was still noticeable the next day. These are definately not swipe and go they do need to be applied with a mirror.

    1. I'm so glad to hear that Cannes Crush had better staying power, Robin!! Sounds like these can vary wildly from shade to shade, eh? Do you think you'll buy more?

    2. G. I am not sure I would buy more. Depends if new shades with shimmer are introduced. And if they are $5.99 again! Lol

  5. I only have one of these, a nude color, and I hate it. It applies so unevenly and goopy, it looks really gross on my lips. And when I open my mouth, little lines of lip color are attached to my lips, if that makes sense - gross. I will say the ones in your pictures look nicer than the one I have, application wise.

    1. I'm so sorry to hear that. :( I've heard that the nude shades are particularly finicky and you just confirmed that. Boo!

I only had that "stringy" issue when I applied a lot of product, and it eventually wwnt away. Have you tried wiping down the applicator a bit before aapplying? I'm curious to know if it still does that for you when using a little less product. Thanks!

    2. In general with these liquid lip products I feel like the nude and light colors are much more difficult to work with and don't look as good as bright colors. I almost found this across the board so I don't even bother with getting the lighter shades anymore.

  6. I was so certain I would love these I also bought 2 and I also feel on the fence about them. I am thinking I will return them because I don't see myself reaching for them and I didn't think the stain was impressive at all, which is what I was wanting.

    1. Same here about the stain, without that they aren't much different from the L'oreal color caresse liquid lips or whatever they are called. Too bad. Kinda goopy too, not a repurchase for me.

  8. These are okay, but I really prefer the Maybelline ones. They're easier to apply and I think they look nicer on.

  9. I picked up Cannes Crush and I'm definitely underwhelmed. It felt nice going on and I love the bright pinky coral color. However, the gloss lasted only about an hour and I saw little no stain. I like the Wet n Wild Vampy Varnish formula a lot more. I just wish they made a similar color to Cannes Crush!

  10. I have seen these but have waited to buy any pending a review. I'm glad I waited. These seem to be just meh. Thanks for saving me money!

  12. Did you ever try the loreal color caresse products that are similar to these? I really love those, and they have great staying power.

    1. LoL I just said this before seeing your comment. I prefer the L'oreal out of the two. These have like 0 stain power on me :(

  13. I bought London Posh and was so mad. The tube looks like a nice natural blush color, but when I applied it... SO MUCH GOLD SHIMMER! I returned it immediately because you couldnt even see the creme base color under all the shimmer.

  14. I have Milan Moment and New York Scene. I generally hate gloss and surprisingly like these a lot. It's true they really don't offer a lot of staying power, though, and at first application it is kind of uneven. I apply and then sort of have to press my lips together a couple times to sort of level it and make sure there are no uneven spots, usually then evening it with my index finger but then it blends in a bit more naturally for me. The lighter shade, Milan Moment, gives me better staying power, though, and it's more a medium orangey shade. You're right about that initial plasticky taste, though. I try not to lick my lips but I got a taste of this and was surprised. Fortunately it fades. I like the two I got, though, but I'm not sure I want any more unless I could score a non-shimmer on deep discount, mainly because these are pretty pricey. I think any of the balms are a better deal, and the matte and balm stains offer much longer coverage.
