Review and Swatches: Flower by Drew Barrymore Nail Lacquer in April Showers

Probably one of the most anticipated drugstore beauty debuts of the past few years (that I can recall), Flower by Drew Barrymore is now at Walmart (click here for more details). I ordered an assortment of Flower cosmetics online, which I will be reviewing in the weeks to come, so I thought I'd kick things off with the one nail polish I ordered.

Since this is a completely new brand, I'm going to be a little bit more detailed in my review than I would be for an established brand, just to give you as much detail as possible. So let's get started:

Flower Nail Lacquer in April Showers
(retail: $4.98, 0.4 oz)

Per the labels of everything I purchased, Flower cosmetics are "Proudly made in the USA" and they "never test on animals."

The Scent for Less: Vince Camuto Eau de Parfum

 Vince Camuto Eau de Parfum

Quite possibly one of the prettiest fragrance bottles I own, Vince Camuto EDP has a fragrance that's every bit as lovely as its bottle (rich, spicy and super sexy). But what's even better? It's a more affordable and, dare I say, better alternative to Victor & Rolf Flowerbomb (in my opinion, of course).

Five Buck Friday

I can't believe how quickly this week flew by. Here we are again at Friday, so it's time for another look at some Nouveau Cheap-approved beauty products that will, of course, set you back a grand total of five bucks! So let's get started:

NYC Matte Me Crazy Top Coat (retail: $1.99 for 0.33 oz, wherever NYC products are sold). This was such a great surprise when I first tried it last April (click here for my full review). Unlike some other affordable matte top coats I've tried in the past that left with me more of a satin-matte look, Matte Me Crazy delivers on its matte effect, and is probably the least expensive matte top coat out there. If you don't like the look of 100% matte nails, consider applying Matte Me Crazy over your entire nail (on top of your favorite polish) and then adding a glossy top coat to just your tips for a fun take on the classic French manicure (like this).

L'Oreal Feria Color Moisturizing Treatment (retail: $2.99 at Sally Beauty for 1.0 oz, $2.69 for Sally Club Members). I don't usually recommend trial sizes in this series, but this is an exception since I think it's wise to try a sample before purchasing a full size tube (the full-size tube is $8.79 at Sally Beauty for 6.0 oz, or $7.99 for Sally Club members). So here's the deal: if you've ever colored your hair at home using a box kit from the drugstore, you know that the conditioners that come in those kits are kind of amazing. They instantly detangle the hair like a hot knife through butter, and they can leave even the most coarse or dry hair feeling and looking like silk. Many years ago, I was in search of an affordable drugstore equivalent to those conditioners, and a co-worker told me about the L'Oreal Feria Color Moisture Treatment available at Sally Beauty. I bought it immediately and I've loved it ever since. It's very, very close to the conditioners your find in at-home hair color kits, and the price is right. Granted you can get the same effect with salon brand conditioners or treatments, but if you're on a tight budget, I think you might be very pleased with this one. Don't take my word for it though--check out the reviews on the Sally website here.

That's it for this installment of Five Buck Friday. Have you tried either of these products? I'd love to hear from you!

Sally Hansen Fog for $1.49 at Ulta NOW (and more)

We all know that the Sally Hansen Smooth & Perfect line of polishes is being phased out, and you have probably seen them on deep clearance at Walgreens, etc. for a few months now.  But I wanted to take a minute to let you know that one shade--Fog--is currently on clearance on the Ulta website for $1.49

Why is this such a big deal? Well if you don't already own Fog and you missed my original post about this, this polish in particular is excellent for creating your own DIY milky glitter polish. You might recall that I did a milky glitter polish drugstore round-up a while back and, in that post, I included a little DIY tutorial about how to achieve a milky glitter manicure using a basic glitter polish + a sheer milky polish. Fog is great for creating your own milky glitter polish because of its neutral color and sheerness, and you can use it with just about any glitter polish out there. Here's a pic from my original post:

One coat of Sally Hansen Smooth and Perfect polish in Fog
+
One coat of  Spoiled by Wet n Wild nail color in Shuffle the Deck ($1.99 at CVS)
 +
One additional coat of Sally Hansen Fog
 =
your very own milky glitter manicure!

Other notable clearance deals available on the Ulta website as of the time of this post (while supplies last):

And thanks to reader Lesley for the reminder that Badger Cuticle Care (my holy grail cuticle balm) is available on the Ulta website too ($5.99).

Also don't forget that Ulta's current promotions include a coupon for $3.50 off a $10 purchase online or in-store (I'm pretty sure that all of  the products mentioned in this post will qualify for that coupon). And you also can get free shipping on any order of $25 or more with code SHIPJAN13.

Happy clearance shopping!

New beauty box subscription service: We Are Onyx

This press release just hit my in-box and I wanted to share it ASAP. I don't currently know anything more about this service than what's on the site, but take a peek:

We Are Onyx is dedicated exclusively to black women and black beauty products. Subscribers to the site pay a monthly fee of $20 and create their personalized beauty profile. Using information from their profile, Onyx sends subscribers monthly beauty products. They can then access an array of video tutorials that explain how to use these products.

According to the brands listed on the site as of the time of this post, it looks like the monthly boxes focus more on haircare and body care at this time.

Also, according to the website, the monthly fee is $20 with free shipping, no hidden fees, and you can cancel at any time.

What do you think about this new beauty box subscription service? Do you think this might be a good fit for you? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Innovative new makeup primer from Shiseido (you HAVE to see this)

Reader Taylor sent me a link to a video that I just had to share with you. Take a minute to watch this demonstration of the new Shiseido Fullmake Washable Base:

So...what do you think? I'm fascinated by it but, at the same time, I'm wondering if the base itself will be easily removed with only warm water? The guy in the video says that when people tried it, they ran cotton over their faces afterward and didn't see any color. So that proves that the makeup is gone, but what about the base

Anyway, I'm intrigued, but I think I'll need to see some reviews first before I go running to my local Asian markets in a crazed search for this product. What about you? Would you try it?

Thanks so much, Taylor, for the link!

Review: New Styli-Style Lip Paint in Tres Chic

Remember back in October when I gave you that sneak-peek at the new products from the recently relaunched drugstore brand, Styli-Style? Well now that Styli-Style is back with so many new products (click here for a store locator or to purchase online), I'm delighted to be able to bring you a series of product reviews, thanks to an assortment of products that I received directly from the brand.

So I'd like to kick things off with their new liquid lipstick called Lip Paint.

(NOTE: for those new to this brand, if you see items on deep clearance at Big Lots, Rite Aid, etc. right now, please know that those are the older products that used to be available at drugstores, and not the newly relaunched products.)

The "old school" Herbal Essences products have landed at Target

Back at the end of December when I posted about how Herbal Essences was bringing back their formulas from the 1990s in the pink and yellow bottles, I heard from many of you who were extremely happy about this (seriously--you guys were really happy about this!).

So I'm delighted to tell you that reader Brandie spotted the new-old favorites at  her local Target the other day. They're not yet available for purchase on the Target website, but you can click here to view the Shine Collection (click on a product to access the store locator) and click here to view the Smooth Collection (click on a product to access the store locator).

It looks like the bottles have been slightly updated, although still very reminiscent of the original design. Also, I can't remember if the shampoos in the original line were silicone-free, but they are now (and the conditioners are sulfate-free). Take a peek:

Palmer's Eventone BB Cream: now at Target

Ever since my original post last July about the new BB creams from Palmer's, I've been looking for them (I've heard from some of you who have able to find this line at Walmart). I don't often shop at Walmart, so I've been scouring Target and all the drugstores for this new line but to no avail. So I'm delighted to tell you that reader Melissa spotted the Palmer's Eventone BB creams at her local Target! Take a peek:

Spotted: Hourglass and Shiseido cosmetics at Costco

Huge thanks to longtime reader Tammie for this one! Tammie spotted some killer deals at her local Costco recently and was nice enough to share:

image credit: Tammie for Nouveau Cheap

From left to right: Hourglass Film Noir Full Spectrum Mascara for $9.97 (retail: $28 at Sephora, click here for Scrangie's review), Hourglass Prodigy Lip Glosses in Opium and Pulse for $6.97 each (retail: $26 each at Sephora, click here for Karla Sugar's swatches), Shiseido Luminizing Lip Gloss in Pop Life for $10.97 (retail: $22 at Sephora, click here for Temptalia's swatches).

I obviously can't guarantee that you'll find these items at your Costco, but it's sure worth a trip if you're an Hourglass and/or Shiseido fan.

Thanks so much, Tammie, for the great sighting and pic!

New Vo5 Island Coconut Shampoo and Conditioner (and more)

Back in November I did a blog post about a new line of haircare products from Vo5 called Salon Series (this line claims to have "a fragrance like no other"; for more details click here). Well that new line is finally on the Vo5 website and you can check out all the products here, in case you haven't seen them in stores yet.

But that's not all we have to look forward to this year from Vo5. Reader Meagan on Facebook just alerted me to the fact that Vo5 has released a new fragrance in their core line:

New Glitter Polishes from Victoria's Secret

Remember last September when I posted that sneak-peek at the new Victoria's Secret nail polishes? I'm sure some of you have already spotted/purchased these new offerings in stores (they're not yet available online as of the time of this post), but did you know that VS is also releasing new glitter polishes?

A huge thanks to my pal Halifax of Sparkled Beauty for the heads-up that Victoria's Secret has four glitters in their new polish range, as well as some metallics. Click here for a peek.

A kind reader on my original post said that these polishes retail for $12 each, although she was able to get them during a sale for $10 each (I haven't been in a VS store for a while so I cannot personally confirm).

Thanks so much, Halifax, for the heads-up about these!

Nail Rock Nail Caviar Collection has landed in the US

Nail Rock, a UK brand whose products have been available at Top Shop and ASOS (UK websites) for a while now, has landed in the US and what's even better than that? They're at Walgreens! (Note: I believe Nail Rock's Eye Rock and Lip Rock collections have previously been spotted in US drugstores, but this is the first nail product sighting I've seen in US drugstores--please correct me if I'm wrong!).

Reader Fitzy of Lacquer Lad not only spotted the Nail Rock Nail Caviar display at his local Walgreens, but was nice enough to include pics of all of the shades, as well as detailed pics of the kit he purchased. Take a peek:

image credit: Fitzy for Nouveau Cheap
Nail Rock Nail Caviar Collection
(retail: $6.99 each at Walgreens)

Unlike the Pretty Woman Nail Pearls (which come in three shades and include a bottle of micro-beads and a funnel for $7.99 each), Nail Rock's version comes in four shades (there are actually more shades out there, but there are four in this particular display) and inludes a jar of micro-beads and a bottle of polish. Another difference is that the Pretty Woman Nail Pearls include directions to "Paint, pour, wait, enjoy" while the Nail Rock directions are to "Paint, dip, press, dry."

The Lipstick League – week of 1.7.12

Congratulations to our very own Brittany of Clumps of Mascara who gave birth to a beautiful baby girl this week! She’s already following in her mama’s fabulous footsteps (check out the adorable cosmetic case that was awaiting her arrival!).

Lipstick League Question of the Week:

Is there a beauty brand that has very rarely, if ever, failed you? If so, enlighten us and tell us why you think their products work so well for you.

G's answer: Maybelline concealers never let me down, and I can't really explain why. I've tried concealers from every brand at the drugstore and I always go back to Maybelline. There must be a magical combination of ingredients that Maybelline puts into their concealer formulas that just really works for my particular skin. I've had great success with their Dream Mousse Concealer (RIP), Mineral Power Concealer, SuperStay concealer (my Holy Grail) and also Age Rewind, which I've been using quite a bit lately (I love the Brightener). I have the Dream Lumi Concealer in my "to test" bin right now, and I'm hoping that one performs well for me too.
