Review: Vaseline Rosy Lips Lip Therapy

Unless you've been reading my blog for a while, you probably have no idea how much I've been anticipating the release of this product. I first posted about Rosy Lips back in October of 2012, and it's literally taken me a whole year to find it. The first "official" US sighting (official as in, by a Nouveau Cheap reader) was in October of THIS year, so that's an awful long time to pine for a drugstore lip product, right?

Rosy Lips has been out in the UK for a few years now (where it comes in a tin), but here in the US it comes in the same type of teeny tiny jar as the other Lip Therapies (original and Cocoa Butter):

NEW Vaseline Rosy Lips Lip Therapy
(retail: around $1.99, 0.25 oz)

The photo above is "reality" and the photo below is what this product looked like to me when I finally saw it at Walgreens:

When I finally found it, I swear I thought a miniature unicorn was going to come galloping out of the little counter display. Anyway, now that I have it, and now that I've used it several times, here's my take on it...

If you've never seen a Vaseline Lip Therapy before, I need to emphasis that it's TINY. I grabbed a Revlon nail polish to place next to it, just for perspective:

The jar has a detachable lid:

On a Q-Tip, it's got a beautiful, rosy tint to it:

But once you get it on your skin, you'll find the tint to be very, very subtle (reminds of Smith's Rosebud Salve, but even less pigmented):

If it weren't for the fragrance, I might be a little disappointed with Rosy Lips. However, the fragrance is so lovely and intoxicating to me that I'm happy to say this baby was worth the wait!

This fragrance actually reminds me a bit of the Nivea Olive Oil & Lemon lip balm. It's got that same lovely, fresh herbal-ness to it, only Rosy Lips also has a beautiful, soft rose note. I was thinking this might smell (and taste) like rosewater, which is an ingredient I LOVE in Persian desserts such as saffron rice pudding (yum). But I don't get rosewater here--this is more of a fresh, herbal scent that's softly laced with rose. I haven't been able to stop sniffing this little jar since I bought it.

The flavor is very, very mild. It pretty much tastes like plain Vaseline, but a little bit of the fragrance does come through onto the taste buds (it's not strong through--it's actually very pleasant to me).

As for texture, moisturization, etc. it's standard Vaseline petroleum jelly with a bit of fragrance and dye. If you're already a user of petroleum jelly, you won't encounter any surprises here. It feels like regular Vaseline petroleum jelly on the skin. If you're not a petroleum jelly fan, I'm certainly not going to try and persuade you to try this. I already like other lip products that contain large amounts of petrolatum (Smith's Rosebud Salve, Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm, Aquaphor, etc.), so using pure petroleum jelly isn't a huge leap for me. But if you tend to stay away from petroleum-based lip products, don't even consider this one!

FINAL VERDICT: If you're already a fan of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly and you love the scent of Nivea Olive Oil & Lemon Lip Balm, I think you're going to LOVE this one. If you've never tried the Nivea lip balm, then just be aware that Rosy Lips doesn't have a traditional, pure rose scent to it. It's herbal and fresh, with a soft, sweet rose note. There's not much pigment here, which is why I didn't photograph it on my lips (it reads as colorless on my medium-pigmented lips) but if you don't have much pigment to your lips, you might experience a soft, rosy wash of color. Because of the adorable packaging and intoxicating fragrance, this product was worth the wait for me.

Have you tried Vaseline Rosy Lips yet? If so, what do you think of it? As of the time of this post, Rosy Lips has been spotted at Walgreens and Target, but I expect it to be everywhere soon. If you can't find this in the lip balm aisle, check the lotion aisle! Some retailers like to put Lip Therapy next to the Vaseline body lotions.

  2. I just bought this about a week ago! I already love it. I also have medium-pigmented lips so I don't notice any colour, but the scent alone was worth the purchase. So lovely!

    1. I absolutely agree... that scent is so lovely, I don't care at all about the lack of color! Lol!

  3. Yep bought at target. I've never used Vaseline lip products before and I like this one.

  4. Seems like the tint might be more to make your lips look a bit healthier if they're in really bad shape than to tint already-fairly-healthy ones.

    1. The package (see pic above) actually says "leaves behind a sheer pink tint" but sheer = invisible for me.

  5. Would you say that if you already have Smiths Rosebud Salve its not worth purchasing?

    1. That's a tough one. If you're looking for more pigment than Smith's, definitely DON'T get this one. But if you're more about the fragrance, I personally love this over Smith's.

  6. I've got the UK version that comes in a tin, and love it so much! It seems more opaque than this one to my eye, and the tint is a bit stronger - definitely noticeable on the lips. If I ever run out of that guy, I'll probably buy this to replace it :)

    1. Aaah, lucky you!!! And now that you tell me the pigmentation is better, I want to try the UK version even more now. Lol

  7. Got mine at Walgreens too, was up front near the body washes/lotions in the same display as the Cocoa Butter one, which I also love. I like this better than Smith's Rosebud, its thicker and lasts longer for

    1. If you actually read this review, you'd see that I mention this EXACTLY:

"it's standard Vaseline petroleum jelly with a bit of fragrance and dye"

What did I expect? Well, I expected a nice flavor (this exceeded my expectations there) and I also expected a bit more tint (it was below my expectations there).

I don't appreciate the sarcasm/rudeness, especially if you didn't read the actual review. Hope that clears thing up for you!

  9. The herbal/rose scent sounds lovely and the teeny tiny size is so cute. I'll have to grab one of these the next time I'm at the drugstore.

  10. I love these cute little things, I have the others (plain and cocoa butter) but have yet to spot the rosy lips. I have a small lip balm problem...

  11. I will probably pick this up during a sale. I love the Cocoa Butter. The packaging is too cute to pass up!

  13. I got this about a month ago solely because of the adorable packaging, I'm not much of a floral person but I love anything pink and I LOVE anything miniature! I tell you if you put anything in a miniature package I buy it for some reason. .. anyway, this thing is so cute and so pink that whenever I put it on I get this odd urge to eat it or bite it for some reason? So I love it... but in a really weird way

    1. I also want everything in cute little miniature packaging. Whenever I see these little Vaseline tubs, I want to buy them only for that reason (I have resisted so far). I don't use lip balm, only lipstick and gloss, and I don't like to use lip products in tubs. Still, the cute little things call to me.

  15. G - I really enjoy all of your reviews and everything you do for your readers, your blog is my number one place to go.
However, I especially enjoyed the picture of with all of the fireworks on it - that is exactly how I feel when I find a drugstore item that has been eluding me (when I've driven to 500 Walgreens and 500 CVSs) - you basically put my feelings into a picture and for that I thank you!

  16. I never thought I would be so excited about Vaseline, but I am! YAY!

  17. This is so damn cute! I only wish it had a touch more pigment. But I bet I'll buy it when I find it, especially if it has a rosy scent.

  18. I bought mine 2 weeks ago. I was really hesitant to purchase a tinted Vaseline that was so tiny for $1.99 when I can get a huge tub for half of that.
But I did, and I can say I love it, that said, I won't purchase it again, as it is just too expensive and the lid detaches all the way so it is not safe for inside my purse.
It's cute and I love it, but one is enough!

  19. Are all posts put on approval for safety, g? This was my first time posting, but it looks like an idiot got through above. LOL.

  20. I grabbed the last lonely one at Target in Milford, MA. It was in a little display box along with the cocoa and regular ones, in the body lotion aisle. Hoping for restock; they will make awesome stocking stuffers or cute little gifties!

  21. I just bought this two days ago, and did a happy dance when I found it at Target. I'm actually thankful that it doesn't have a rosey scent, that was what eventually turned me off of Rosebud Salve.

  22. I bought mine in Asia and mine came in a tube similar to Nivea or Blistex lip balms in the US. I use it all of the time, at least now I know i can get back ups.

  23. I just found mine today at Walgreens. I have been a fan of Vaseline Lip Therapy for years. I was used to just the plain lip therapy in the tube, which to me tastes like lemon. It was always pleasant. Then I tried the cherry in the tube. I have tried the little tubs now. I really wish the cocoa butter and the rosy lips came in the tubes. They were easier to deal with. I am pleased with the rosy lips product. It has a very faint tint on my lips, and I am fair skinned. The scent is very pleasant and I am not overly impressed with "rose" scents in general. Overall, a good product. :D

  24. Would love it if there was a way to use it without dipping my fingers in or having to use an applicator or cotton swab. I bet it's great product!

    1. Invest in a lip brush. Elf has a good one for $3, and it's very handy for products like this or liquidy lip colors like the OCC lip tars.

  25. I just got one of these with a packet of Qtip pointed applicators. I really, really enjoy the fragrance, although I agree that it's not doing much for me pigmentation-wise. :)

  26. Oh gosh this one's soo cute! I'm used to seeing big petroleum jelly tubs, but this one's so tiny and pink. Wish we had this in our country. I'd definitely buy. :)

  27. Thanks for the review. I dab Vaseline on my lips all the time. I might continue to buy the large tubs and figure out a way to add a little tint to some of it, so as to get the most bang for my money. I don't think I pay much more for a 14 oz size. Perhaps about $3.00.
