Reader Review: NEW Sally Hansen Limited Edition Sugar Coat Nail Colors (the sparkly shades)

Yesterday I showed you bottle shots of the eight NEW shades in the Sally Hansen Sugar Coat polish line, and today I have a wonderful reader-review (with swatches) of the sparkly shades thanks to longtime reader Tara, who purchased these polishes recently.

To refresh your memory, here are bottle shots of the three sparkly shades in this new range (thanks to reader Kelli):

Sally Hansen Limited Edition Sugar Coat Nail Colors in Royal Icing, Treat-Heart, Pink Sprinkles

Take it away, Tara!

Royal Icing

Royal Icing. It's like Sinful Colors Cinderella on steroids in the bottle - the most lovely powder blue brimming with twinkling pink sparkles that shift to twinkling baby yellow sparkles.  And then I swatched it. The 1st coat was completely see-through and patchy.  The 2nd coat was completely see through and even patchier - it looked like some powder blue flocked chunks had formed.  Also, the 1st coat dried almost instantly but the 2nd coat took a little while.  3rd coat, still see-through.  And the powder blue chunks are even bigger now. And it didn't seem to be drying.  And I didn't want to pull major bald spots so...I left it to dry over night.  Applied a 4th coat this morning and this is what you see in the pics.  It's 99% opaque.  It's not crazy thick but four coats is...a lot of coats.  The formula is...funky.  It kinda looks like powder blue flocking sprinkled over a glitter polish.  One wrong move and it's easy to pull a huge bald spot.  Definitely have to let each coat fully dry before applying more.  And definitely DO NOT go over wet areas that have begun to set, which is almost instantaneously.  The good part:  the almost constantly visible pink sparkle/twinkle/glow glistening between the powder blue bits that my camera refused to pick up. And that pink sparkle/glow shifts to yellow!

Treat-Heart

Treat-Heart.  This one is odd. 1st coat, totally see-through.  I was surprised because it looked so dense in the bottle.  Same scary you-better-watch-it-or-huge-bald-spots/giant mess will occur formula.  Wait for total dryness between coats.  1st coat dried like lightning.  2nd coat took a while.  3rd coat took a little while longer. At least there is total opacity at 3 coats though!  Treat-Heart looks more like a metallic version of the regular Sugar Coats in indirect light.  If it gets hit with some light it does have some sparkly-ness but something about it looks...bleh.  I feel like it's a paler weaker version of Crushed Candy (from the Jesse's Girl Frosted Gumdrops Collection).

Pink Sprinkles

Pink Sprinkles.  This is a cranberry jelly texture polish with red and gold irregular bits. There is no pink here.  Maybe they mixed up the labels and this one was supposed to be Treat-Heart?  Anyway...this one is odd too!  The first coat looks like a cranberry jelly polish with sparkly irregular red and gold pieces in it.  First coat, totally see through.  Second coat, totally see through.  Third coat, kinda see through but I let it dry completely and it became opaque.  The cranberry jelly turns textured and the shiny irregular pieces sparkle between the texture.  The formula was runny and strange.

Thanks so much, Tara, for the beautiful photos and insightful review! It sounds like these are a bit high-maintenance and may take some effort to get "just right" but, if you love your textured polishes, it could be worth the effort! Despite the sheerness of Royal Icing, I think I "need" that one. How about you? Anything here catching your eye?

  1. Royal Icing is the first textured polish I have really wanted! Once I heard it is the textured version of Sinful Cinderella I knew I needed it! But if it is with difficult, I will def hold back and wait till a sale or coupon or something. Thanks G and Tara!!

  2. I had to get all 3 of these as they are so gorgeous. I haven't had a chance to try them out though. I don't mind doing a little work in application if I can get a gorgeous mani that lasts as a result. I think I will try a corresponding base though as undies to help with the opacity some as I don't really want to use more than 2 coats.

  3. that's weird because my bottle of royal icing applied beautifully and opaque in 3 thin coats. maybe you got a janky bottle?

  4. The key to textured polishes is to wait about 5-10 minutes between coats. It can't be rushed or it will end up clumpy.

  5. Gah! I swore after buying and trying Sour Apple and having so many formula issues with that polish that I would not purchase any more of these Sugar Coat polishes. However, the crazy polish addict inside of me is screaming "I WANT THIS COLLECTION!" Why must you do this to me Sally Hansen....

  6. I decided to get on board the trend with Royal Icing and I can't find it anywhere. Every display is sold out of Royal Icing...I will keep looking. Odds are I will only where it once so I won't let the formula put me off!

  7. I wonder what a couple of coats of these would look like over darker colors. Royal Icing over navy blue? Pink Sprinkles over cranberry? Color me curious.

I just managed to get Sour Apple today, the only color I wanted from the first collection of Sugar Coats, but I guess I'll have to keep my eye out for these new colors too. Ouch, my aching wallet.

  11. I still want Royal Icing. I have Teenage Dream from Katy Perry x OPI; its rather difficult to work with and comes out sheer yet I can get it to go opaque! I WILL work with Royal Icing!

  12. I think I will stick to using Cinderella and just stick to the Gem Crush polishes they have as well. To me those are worth it since glitter gets on easily. :3

  15. I think I'm just too spoiled now by my Frosted Gumdrops collex.... all of my former lemmings for these just died based on how hard they sound to work with. I am still such a novice! thanks for saving me a ton of time, effort and frustration :) seriously!

  16. HEY G!!!!! BIG thing for Atlanta/Dunwoody residents: Walgreens at Chamblee Dunwoody RD has $1 Off coupons for ANY Sugar Coats AND they have the limited edition colors!! I don't know if all Walgreens have them but a $1 off is great, since they're $5.99 at Walgreens ^_^ They're under the nail polish remover, because there isn't a placard for them to sit in. Just look down and COUPONS! :D

  17. I got a both Royal Icing and Pink Sprinkles and I'm glad I didn't see this review beforehand. I didn't have any such application problems. I wonder if it's just the method? I loaded up my brush and did quick, thicker coats with a light hand and it went on very smoothly for me. I can't remember if I needed 2 or 3 coats, but I didn't get huge bald patches. I did notice that it could clump, but that only happened on 1 of 10 fingers. I LOVE the color of Pink Sprinkles, it looks delicious to me, and I almost lost it when I saw Royal Icing, because it's like a texture Cinderella. Maybe these are just ones you need to practice with a little to make it work.
