Spotted at CVS: e.l.f. nail color display (dupe alert)

I searched waaaay back into my archives and I'm telling you, either I'm losing it, or I don't think I have ever seen e.l.f. at CVS before. Am I losing it? Do you remember any kits or special value sets surfacing at CVS in the past few years? I know we've seen e.l.f. at Walgreens (and of course Target, Big Lots and Dollar Tree) but at CVS? I think this might be a first.

Reader Shannon was actually the first person to bring this display to my attention (she spotted it at her local CVS back on April 26th).

Longtime reader Rachel spotted this display the other day at her local CVS and was nice enough to share some pics:

(retail: $1.99 each at CVS)

Keep reading for more pics from Rachel and some swatches from reader Dawn...

There are six shades in this display and none of them have shade names:

Longtime reader Dawn also spotted this display at her local CVS and was nice enough to share pics and a swatch comparison with us:

Dawn also shared a comparison of the flakie polish in this display to Essie Shine of the Times:

e.l.f. orange glitter (on bare nail), Essie Shine of the Times (one coat over black), e.l.f. flakie (three coats over black)

Dawn said that it took three coats of the e.l.f. flakie to reach the coverage of one coat of Essie Shine of the Times. Dawn also said that the e.l.f. flakie took quite a while to dry.

If you never picked up Shine of the Times (or the original Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure), this could be a good option at just $1.99, but be prepared to apply multiple coats, and you might want to slap a quick-dry top coat on when you're done, just to help cut down on the long dry-time.

Have you spotted/purchased any of the polishes in this new CVS display? Thoughts?

Thanks SO much, Dawn and Rachel, for the great pics! And thanks to readers Stephanie and LizK for sharing info about this collection as well.

  1. Not these kind but I'm starting to see more e.l.f. polishes at Kmart. Along with some newerish OPI, China Glaze, ORLY, SP Salon Perfect. :)

  2. Ugh - I haven't seen elf anywhere - scratch that - I haven't seen elf nail polish anywhere. Every Target that I've been to only has makeup, no nail color. No Walgreens by me either, and haven't had any luck at Walmart. The two Walmarts closest to me changed up their cosmetics areas and added some new brands, but elf was not one of them. I really hate to order $2 polish online and pay $5 for shipping...

  3. I saw an ELF display at my KROGER last week which made me do a double take. It was a rotating column display of a wide range of their $1 line standing next to the health/beauty aisle. I literally thought to myself, "I need to send a picture to Nouveau Cheap," but we were in a mega hurry. This makes me sad now! Maybe later this week I'll head back to scout it out!

    1. OMG, Carolyn, I saw the same thing at Albertsons! I was like, "What are $1 e.l.f. items doing at my grocery store???" I guess they're branching out. :)

  4. Bought two the other day, the mint green and the orange flakie; the orange's brush was pretty jacked up and will make it difficult to use, and I was not impressed with the glitter itself. The mint green/jade is okay, I think the formula is easy to use but the width of the container makes it difficult to hold the brush just right. :-\

  6. Oh, I hope to find these at CVS. They'd be a fun way to cash in my CVS bucks! I'm spotting e.l.f. in all kinds of places, but the only time I see nail polishes are at Big Lots, the end cap at Target (for some holiday display) and one local grocery store -- and those were tucked in by the cough drops or something!

  9. You aren't losing it. This is the first time I've ever seen ELF at CVS either. However, it didn't shock me that much because I've been seeing ELF and NYX both popping up in unexpected places lately.

I passed on these because I'm pretty sure most are dupes from their regular line. The flaky is pretty, but it looks the same as their core line flakey which...uhhh...doesn't seem to be on the ELF site anymore. Anyway, I got more than one of those the last time ELF had a big sale.

If any of your readers are jonesy for a flakey polish though (or is it flakie?), this one is both pretty and inexpensive.

  10. This display was in my local CVS back in April, and I purchased the "lavender" color. I don't really understand why the polishes don't have names....strange, IMHO. I've got to tell you, the lavender is amazing!! It has a lustre, and depending on the light, almost takes on a cornflower blue hue at times. Two coats provided full coverage, and my mani lasted five days with no chipping!

  11. This display was at my Big Lots today so I grabbed the flakie :)
