Review: Revlon Limited Edition Chroma Chameleon Nail Enamel in Tanzanite

I'm not sure if a lot of people missed my original post about this collection back in the beginning of March, but in the last few weeks I've received several photo submissions and heads-ups about the Chroma Chameleon Collection. So the good news is that this collection still seems to be popping up in many retail locations, in case you've been looking for it since March.

And just a quick reminder: please do a search on my blog before you send pics or info to me--otherwise it can be a waste of your time and efforts and I always feel horrible having to say that I can't feature your pics/info because I've already posted pics of the same collection in a previous blog post!

After seeing this collection in person several weeks ago at Rite Aid, only one shade came home with me. Let's take a look:
Revlon Limited Edition Chroma Chameleon Nail Enamel in Tanzanite
(retail: $7.99, 0.23 oz)

I'm sorry but how can you NOT think of this song when you see the words "Chroma Chameleon"??

Culture Club - Karma Chameleon

Keep reading for lots of swatches...

The reason why I chose this polish was because I don't have another duochrome purple quite like this. In the bottle, there's a lovely, dark, antique gold shade that comes through:

But the big question:

Is that gold color ever visible on the nail?

Let's see!

Two coats, no top coat:

It's definitely not visible in bright light, but here are lots of additional photos taken in variety of different lights:

So yeah. That gold that's in the bottle never quite appears on the nail, but that's not to say that this polish lacks a chameleon quality. It can turn from bright, royal purple to violet and then to an almost dusty pinkish-lavender depending on the lighting and angle. Also, Tanzanite has that same dark green base to it that polishes like Orly Space Cadet have. In certain lights that green base comes through a bit stronger, but for the most part you're going to see varying shades of purple from this polish.

The formula on this one was much better than I was anticipating. The consistency is very nice and easy to work with, and it's not terribly streaky or sheer, even on the first coat. I only needed two coats for very good opacity. Dry time was impressive as well. Very good on the first coat and good on the second coat too.

FINAL VERDICT: If the price of the Chroma Chameleon polishes doesn't scare you off ($7.99 for 0.29 oz), then you might be happy with some of these if you don't already own any duochromes and want to see what the fuss is all about. I like that they're easily accessible, and I also like that the shade I purchased only required two coats for very good opacity. Granted, the color shift isn't super strong or mind-blowing, but it's still quite pretty. None of the shades in this range seem terribly unique compared to other salon brand or indie duochrome collections but, for drugstore, I think Tanazanite is easier to work with than say, the Chameleon polishes from Sherer, which require at least three coats (or a creme base coat underneath). If you can get the Chroma Chameleon polishes on sale (tomorrow, 5/11, is the last day for 40% off at Rite Aid!) or on clearance, even better.

Do you own any polishes from the Limited Edition Chroma Chameleon Collection? Thoughts?

  4. This is so pretty. I do love the blue shade, too, but don't want to pay $8 for these. Kind of hoping they'll turn up at Big Lots in a few months!

  6. I have Topaz and Pink Quartz. They're a bit sheer - requiring 3 coats apiece, but the duochrome is really lovely in both of them. I'm sorry Tanzanite ended up such a letdown.

  11. Looks similar to Deborah Lippmann Private Dancer (which came in a Sample Society box), I think the DL has a bit more visible goldish flash but it's still pretty subtle.

  12. Well, THAT was shiny. Nearly blinding from the photos! I like it, but it's not a shade I would buy. I have a few purples already though none of them are "chameleon" colors.

  13. Amethyst from this line is sooo amazing! There is hardly a duo chrome effect but still a beautiful purple. I wish the bottle wasn't so small. I may need to find another one for backup.
