Review: NYX Love In Rio Eyeshadow Trio in Segredos de Giselle

Continuing my mini-series of reviews of some of the new-for-2013 products from NYX, today I'd like to show you the Love in Rio Segredos de Giselle eyeshadow trio. If you're a NYX lover, be sure to check back in the days and weeks to come, because I've got lots more to show you from NYX!
NYX Love in Rio Eyeshadow Trio in Segredos de Giselle
(retail: $5.99, 0.105 oz)

There are a whopping 22 trios in the Love in Rio palette collection. They can be purchased on the NYX website as well as at Ulta (in-store and online). The Segredos de Giselle trio (translation: Secrets of Giselle) contains some basic, work-friendly shades--let's see how it worked for me.

I absolutely love the little "bow" on the newer NYX palettes...

As you can see, all three shades in this trio are shimmers (but not frosts).  Here's what they look like on the back of my hand (no primer):

Hello, my little work-appropriate eye!

For the look above, I used no primer beforehand. Using a basic eyeshadow brush:
  • I applied the light beige shade all over my lid and up into the crease.
  • Then, I applied the pink shade under my browbone and the inside corner of my eye.
  • Lastly, I applied the brown shade in my outer "v" and under my lower lashline.

What you need to know about this trio: The texture of these shadows is very nice and buttery, but a little of the soft side. I always seem to have better luck with the texture and pigmentation of the shadows in NYX palettes (vs. their single eyeshadows) and this trio is no exception. These shadows go on very easily, even without primer. I can get about 4-5 hours of wear before some noticeable fading when I don't wear primer but, if I apply primer first, these shadows last me all day and in to the night. All three colors blend very easily, and there's only a bit of fallout with the two lighter shades (nothing crazy though). The beige shade in this trio reminds me very much of Stila Wheat. It's one of those versatile shades that you can use as a base, highlighter or to soften up darker colors. It's probably the shade that you'll get the most mileage from if you purchase this trio. The brown shade is nice as well, especially if you like warmer browns. It works nicely as a crease color for daytime, and also as an all-over wash from lid to crease. The light pink shade is the color I find myself reaching for the least, but that's only because I don't normally wear pinks near my eyes. It does work well for me as a brow-bone shade though (as you can see above).

FINAL VERDICT: If you're looking for a workhorse trio that you can throw in your bag and use with lots of your other shadows, this might be one to consider. Even without primer, I find the pigmentation of these shadows to be impressive, as well as the staying power. This is one of those trios that's not terribly exciting or glamorous, but it's one that you might find yourself reaching for the most on a day-to-day basis. The only word of caution I have for you is to not press too hard with your brush, applicator, etc. because these shadows are a bit soft (not ridiculously soft though, but it's still easy to make a mess if you tend to be heavy-handed).

Do you own any of the NYX Love in Rio eyeshadow trios? I'd love to hear from you!

  1. Good to know that not ALL of NYX's new palettes are terrible. Maybe it's just the brights and mattes? The Smoky palette was horribly lacking in pigment when I swatched it at Ulta. So far, the new colorful palettes have disappointed! It *almost* put me off this whole "Love in..." collection but this gives me hope. You can never have too many neutrals.

  2. Pretty colors. I'm knee-deep in palettes at the moment, but once I use some up I might have to grab this one. It looks like it would be a good standby.

  3. Does anyone know how this compares to Covergirl's shimmering sands?

  4. I do not have any of the trios.. but I have three of the larger "paris" palettes. I swatched every single one of the new "love" palettes as well as most of the other newer ones (including the neutral and smokey as well as the very large palette, the name of which escapes me at the moment) when I got the chance to go to an Ulta on a trip. There are a lot of duplicates within the "love" palettes which is why I bought the larger ones, better value for the money. I found them to be a little "hit or miss" (I would really suggest swatching first in store) but there are some really nice shadows in there...and they were all better than the smokey/neutral and large palette which were quite disappointing. A lot of unique colors as well. The packaging was really nice.. cute, user friendly, and well made. I would certainly buy more of them if given the chance. I have Merci Beaucoup, Let Them Eat Cake, and Pardon My French.. and would recommend any of them.

  5. I have a couple of these trios and love them! I was quite pleased at how the texture and pigmentation improved compared to NYX's Smokey Palette. Oh how I was disappointed by that one!

  6. Pretty! This trio looks a lot like WnW's Walking on Eggshells to me, though...

  7. I've got the Nighttime in Rio (matte hot pink, matte violet, sparkly black) and I lurrrve it - no problem with the mattes as far as I'm concerned. Not the most practical set of colors but I couldn't resist... (PS I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who squees over the bow on the packaging!)
