Review and comparison: Maybelline Summer 2013 Limited Edition Color Show Nail Lacquer in Mint Mist

Since there are so many of us who love mint green polishes (myself included) I thought I would show you the new Limited Edition Color Show shade, Mint Mist, and compare it to a few other mint polishes in my stash. This polish is from the Maybelline Summer 2013 Limited Edition collection (click here to see the display) and should now be popping up at your local Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, Ulta and Kmart stores. I purchased this polish, as well as two others from the collection (which I will review as well) at my local Bed Bath and Beyond.
Maybelline Summer 2013 Limited Edition Color Show Nail Lacquer in Mint Mist
(retail: $2.99 at Bed, Bath & Beyond, 0.23 oz)

980 Mint Mist

Thee coats, no top coat:

This polish was sheer and streaky on the first coat and a bit better on the second coat. It really requires three coats for good opacity, but on the third coat I experienced some self-leveling issues (you can see that on my pinky and ring finger above) but a good top coat should level things out a bit. The formula was not terrible to work with, but I think that I will need to add a few drops of polish thinner to this one to help with the slightly-goopy third coat. Dry-time was average on all three coats.

When I saw this shade in-store, I immediately went to the permanent Color Show display to see how close this shade was the to the core shade, Green With Envy:

Left: Mint Mist (limited edition)
Right: Green With Envy (permanent)

As you can see, Mint Mist is lighter and bluer than Green With Envy.

Here's a comparison with a few other mint greens in my collection:

Pure Ice Home Run, Maybelline Mint Mist, Wet n Wild I Need A Refresh-Mint, Revlon Minted

Three coats of each polish, no top coat:

Pure Ice Home Run, Maybelline Mint Mist, Wet n Wild I Need A Refresh-Mint, Revlon Minted

As you can see, Mint Mist is the bluest of all. I would even go so far as to say that Mint Mist is as blue as you can go and still be a "mint green." It's funny because, when I'm wearing this one on my nails, it definitely looks green to me, but it's only when I see it next to other mint greens that I see how truly blue-based it is.

If you're a mint green fanatic like me, then this might be one to consider (if you're not opposed to applying three coats and you have some patience when it comes to application). It's a gorgeous shade and I think it would look especially stunning on deeper skintones.

  1. Thank you so much for this! With mint green being the go to color this season I've been looking for the perfect polish to go with all my mint green tops. And you've convinced me that I need...Revlon Minted! Is that a core shade?

    1. You're welcome! Sadly, Minted was recently discontinued (it was permanent for several years) but you can still find it at places like Big Lots and Marshalls.

  5. Ooh, this one looks close to Essie mint candy apple, which I still haven't gotten around to picking up. I can't wait to find this collection!

  6. This looks like it'd be similar to Fiver by Butter London! It's definitely a blueish mint, as opposed to Revlon's Minted.

  8. I have WNW In Need of a Refreshment which I LOVE and Revlon Minted, which I plan to wear soon. I believe I bought it on clearance at CVS and I'm glad because it is more green than the WNW.

  13. Wonderful comparison, I'm loving these shades right now! It would be cool if you could do one of these comparisons with Revlon Eclectic :3

  14. Pretty, but I still think I love Sinful Colors' Mint Apple more! (Have you tried any of the new WnW polishes at Dollar General? They had a shimmery mint green, I think called Retro Mint or something like that, which was really pretty.)

  15. Try Sinful Colors Mint Apple -- nice coverage with one coat, very subtle shimmer, color similar to Minted.

  17. I love WNW I Need a Refresh-mint! Not streaky and covers well, 2 coats is perfect. My first foray into non-beige/pink/red np colors. :) Amanda, Pure Ice is at Walmart, great formulas!!

  18. I bought this polish yesterday and put it on. I found it pretty difficult to work with. The color is really beautiful, though.

  19. I bought this and tested it on a loose tip at home, it was streaky and did not level well when it dried, I tried it on one more tip but its a difficult Polish to work with and I did not like the Forumla one bit. I took it back and spent the extra $4.50 on Essie's Mint Candy Apple which is identical maybe, a 'touch' truer colour than Mint that looks a little paler next to it however if you were not told they were different you probably could not tell ! Essies Formula was amazing, my first Essie product.
