Review: Revlon Nail Enamel in Eclectic

Some of the products featured in this post were given to Nouveau Cheap directly from the brand. For my full disclosure, please see the bottom of this blog post.

I received some of the new-for-2013 Revlon polishes for review a while back, so today I thought I'd kick off this mini-series of reviews with the new shade Eclectic. Since Minted (the other minty-green creme in the permanent Revlon Nail Enamel lineup) was discontinued, and I happen to own Minted, I'll show you some comparison swatches at the end of this post.
Revlon Nail Enamel in 580 Eclectic
(retail: around $4.99, 0.5 oz)

Keep reading for swatches...

Eclectic is a light teal-ish, mint-ish creme. It's quite sheer on the first and second coats, so it does require three coats for good opacity. The formula, though thin and watery, is easy to work with. I don't detect any streaks after three coats.

(three coats, no top coat)

(apologies for all of the visible cuticle oil--I've been doing polish swatches all morning and I needed some heavy hydration!)

I'm trying to think of any shades that I have that closely resemble Eclectic, and I can't think of one. It's greener than China Glaze For Audrey and Wet n Wild I Need a Refresh-Mint, but it's bluer than most of the mint green cremes that I own. In that respect, I'd say Eclectic is just like its name...eclectic!

Now for a comparison of Revlon Minted (now discontinued) and Eclectic. Some say that Eclectic took Minted's place in the permanent line-up...let's see if that's true:

(three coats of each color, no top coat)

Not even close. As you can see, Minted is more of a traditional pastel mint green creme.

If you love Minted and never got a chance to grab it, don't worry because the Revlon Top Speed shade, Jaded, is a VERY close substitution.

FINAL VERDICT: If you are a mint or teal creme lover, I would suggest taking a look at Eclectic. No, it's not a good substitution for Minted, but that's OK since you can get Jaded in the Top Speed collection for that. Eclectic is just that--it's greener than lots of other mint cremes at the drugstore,  but it's also bluer than lots of pastel green cremes out there. It does require three coats for good opacity, but since it's so unique and beautiful (to me at least!) I think it's worth the extra effort.

In other Revlon nail enamel news: I noticed that the previously-limited-edition shade Sheer Seafoam is now listed on the Revlon website (in the core collection). This is great news for those of you who didn't get it when it was part of the Gucci Westman Summer 2012 Escapism Collection. I know a lot of people didn't care for Sheer Seafoam when it first came out (it's very true to its name--super sheer) BUT, it's an excellent jelly polish for jelly sandwiches (click here to see the jelly sandwich I made with Sheer Seafoam).

Do you own Revlon Eclectic? If so, how would you compared it to other minty or teal cremes that you own?

  1. It also looks similar to Sinful Colors Mint Apple. I love Mint Apple and the price!

    1. I thought that too, at first, but Mint Apple is greener. Also, Mint Apple contains fine gold shimmer whereas Eclectic is shimmer-free. Hope that helps!

  2. I own Jaded from the Top Speed line, and I like it because it's more on the yellow side compared to my WnW I Need a Refresh-Mint, Essie Mint Candy Apple, and Mint Sorbet from Revlon's Scented line, which are all fairly blue. The only thing I don't like about Jaded is that it never takes less than three coats to look good. Needless to say, I love mint nail polish! I spotted Eclectic the other day at Target, but it didn't come home with me.

  3. I think it's a dupe for Essie's Turquoise & Caicos. I tried swatching the two side by side and I could barely tell the difference.

  4. It looks pretty similar to Essie's Turquoise and Caicos too! At least as far as I can tell.

  6. I pick up this enamel at CVS last week during the sale, but I changed my mind and went with some of the Revlon Nail Art enamels instead. Thanks for the review. Considering adding it to my short list...

  7. I love it! It's like my two current obsessions, pale blue and mint green, in one.

  11. Revlon's old Minted reminds me of Sally Hansen's Mint Sorbet. Its actually on my nails now! lol

  12. I really like this one. The only mint polish I have is Spoiled's Toad-ally Amazing, which I love. I like Revlon polish so may have to pick this one up sometime.

  13. This reminds me a lot of a Revlon one I have that is called Mint Gelato and is a scented polish. Either way, I love these kinds of shades and Eclectic looks great on you!

  14. I own Revlon's Eclectic (in fact I just painted my nails this color before stumbling upon your post!). It is nearly an exact dupe for Essie's Turquoise and Caicos-- I swatched them side-by-side on my nails and CANNOT tell the difference! I think Essie's formula is a little nicer (2 coats to Revlon's 3) but the color is identical. At Walmart, the Revlon polishes are only in the upper $3 range and the Essie are nearly $8, so it is a significant savings for the same color.

  15. OMG yay, I've been hunting for Sheer Seafoam for ages! I even had my friend in England looking for it for me! I'm a sucker for both jellies and teals, so combine the two and I'm done for! I didn't realize it had been LE...it never turned up in the stores around here. :(

Your review was stolen. Word for word, including swatches! She stole from me too.. She even removed your watermark. Sorry to put a link in here, but I thought you should know...
