Five Buck Friday

After a brief hiatus for the holidays, Five Buck Friday is back and this week I've got a couple of fun little suggestions for your five-buck-fix. For new readers, this series is dedicated to beauty products that I personally own and love. The theme here is that everything I recommend in these posts will set you back a grand total of...five bucks!

Keep reading for this week's Five Buck Friday picks...

Chapstick Green Apple Moisturizer SPF15 (retail: around $1.99 for 0.15 oz, wherever Chapstick products are sold). If you love Green Apple Jolly Ranchers, you might just love this lip balm too. It smells and tastes exactly like the candy to me (it even looks like one with its green translucent stick), and I've been reaching for it every time I need some added moisture underneath my drier lip colors. It's not a super moisturizing lip balm on its own, but I think it works beautifully to add a touch of moisture to lipsticks that are a little bit dry (this balm works exceptionally well underneath my Wet n Wild Megalast Lipsticks).

Wet n Wild Megalast Lipstick in Cherry Picking (retail: $1.99 for 0.11 oz, wherever Wet n Wild products are sold). Speaking of WnW Megalast Lipsticks, here's my current favorite shade that I can't seem to get enough of these days. Cherry Picking is a shade I originally didn't really consider a staple in my makeup bag, but I recently "rediscovered" this color and I've been reaching for it every time I want a bright, cheerful pop of color when I'm taking it easy with the rest of my face (click here for swatches). Paired with black liquid liner on my upper lids, minimal shadow, lots of mascara and a soft wash of blush on my cheeks, Cherry Picking is a perfect shade to make my face come alive. It's reminiscent of Revlon's iconic Cherries in the Snow, so it's going to be one of those shades that looks more pink/magenta on some, while more of a blue-based red on others. I am usually scared of colors like this but, for some reason, Cherry Picking totally works for me, so I hope it does for you too. Try slapping on a layer of that Chapstick Green Apple lip balm first (or any other not-super-moisturizing lip balm you own) and you should be good to go for hours.
LA Colors Colorcraze Nail Polish in Cactus (retail: $1 for 0.44 oz, at Dollar Tree and wherever else LA Colors products are sold). I've owned this polish for a while now, but it wasn't until reader Ari kindly shared with me her awesome dupe discovery that I rediscovered my love for this polish (thanks again, Ari!). I love olive/army green nail colors in general, and I had forgotten that this one's surprisingly complex when worn over black or other dark shades (although it looks great on its own too). To see it in some different lights, check out Kelly's swatches here, and then compare those to Scrangie's swatches of Deborah Lippmann Chain Reaction. If you don't have any olive/army greens in your polish collection, this is a great one to start with and I'm betting it will leave you wanting more and more of them! For a buck at Dollar Tree? It's a no-brainer.

That's it for this installment of Five Buck Friday. See you next Friday for more affordable splurges!

  1. I grabbed one of the green apple chapsticks over the holidays.. and it is super yummy. Tastes/smells just like a Jolly Rancher candy, but not so strong that it is overpowering. I also have one in orange cremecicle and chocolate ice cream flavors.. and they are both super yummy as well. I keep one in each of my cars, and another in my purse.. I find them perfect for topping a lip product on the go just for a bit of extra moisture (like after a meal), without being so wet or oily that it breaks down my lipstick, even works well over my Maybelline 24hr lipcolor which is rather particular and prefers it's own topcoat. Another plus is that they do not seem to melt in hot weather as easily as some others I have had in the past.

  2. Loving this post G.! Next time through Walgreens I think I will revisit Cherry Picking! As a cool tone blue eyed blonde I usually don't gravitate to Olive greens so I am really lacking in that dept. I just left the Dollar Tree literally 2 min before reading this....Im still in the car!! Lol

  3. ITA with Cherry Picking! I recently found this unopened in my stash. It's perfect with a subdued face!

I'm heading to the dollar tree for LA Colors Cactus. A Deborah Lippmann dupe for a buck? I'm sold!

Thanks so much for another 5 Buck Friday. I love this series!!

  4. Yay, Five Buck Friday is back! I love Five Buck Friday, as I'm on a super-tight budget, but still love makeup and goodies. :)

I've been eying the Green Apple Chapstick for a while, but I wasn't sure just how green apple-y it was. This has sold it for me, gotta go get it. Probably have to get the Orange Creamsicle one, too, if I can find it again... I used to love Orange Creamsicles before they changed them.
