On the Runway: New Revlon PhotoReady BB Cream, Baby Sticks, Ultimate Suede Lipsticks and more

Over the past few days I've been sharing with you some of the drugstore brands that have been making appearances on the runway at Fashion Week New York this week. Well when it comes to Revlon, not only are their current products popping up on on the runway, but also some of their Spring 2013 products!

When you read the following press release, you'll see that some of the products that were used by Gucci Westman this week won't be available in stores until January 2013 or April 2013 (PhotoReady BB Cream, Baby Stick blush sticks, Ultimate Suede Lipstick (new line of lipsticks) and a new Top Speed nail shade).

So consider this a sneak-sneak peek of some of the Revlon products we'll see in drugstores next year:

Swatches: Chameleon duochrome nail polishes in Nucleus and Corona

It's become a bit of a tradition for me on Saturdays to show you my "weekend manicures". So I thought I'd show you two of the new duochromes/multichromes from Chameleon today!

NOTE: Chamelon nail polishes are sold at Walmart and Rite Aid, but they're also available with everyday free shipping (no minimum order) on the CQ website. They cost a little bit more when you order them directly from CQ, but if you can't find them in your area and you really want them, it might be worth it since shipping is free.

NOTE 2: The newer Chameleon shades all have space-related names on the CQ site, in case you're not sure which are old and which are new. I purchased these two polishes at my local Rite Aid for $3.99 each and even though all of the new shades were gorgeous, these are the two that really stood out to me.

Chameleon Nucleus (left) and Corona (right)
(retail: $3.99 at Rite Aid, 0.4 oz each)

As with all duochromes/multichromes, when you view the polishes at different angles, the colors shift:

Fashion Week: TRESemme on the Runway

Here's a glimpse at how TRESemme was used during New York Fashion Week. These looks were created for the Rebecca Minkoff show by TRESemme stylist Jeanie Syfu

Sidenote: I love, love, love TRESemme 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray. I've got long, naturally wavy hair and this spray gives my waves so much life and curl, without looking crunchy. Sometimes when I use this at night, I wake up in the morning and my waves are still in perfect ringlets (which never happens). I tried it on a whim when I spotted it at Target a few months ago and it's quickly moved up to one of my all-time fave styling products. The redhead model's hair below is almost exactly what my waves look like, even after a long night out on the town. Highly recommend this stuff.

Fashion Week: Butter LONDON on the Runway

I just received some info about how Butter London was worn on the runway recently at New York Fashion Week and thought I'd share! Take a peek:

New York Fashion Week Spring 2013
Nails by Katie Hughes, Global Colour Ambassador for butter LONDON

ERIN FETHERSTON

Overall Look: The designer's signature feminine style had a bit of an edge.  The collection consisted of flirty, feminine silhouettes with zippers, studs and texture.

Nail Design: The models weren't wearing bracelets or rings because Erin wanted the nails to be the accessory for the hands.  Metallic nails mimicked the look of jewelry, lending itself to the ultimate eye-catching accessory. We used Lillibet's Jubilee, a silver metallic colour with a lilac finish that adds a feminine touch to the rock & roll vintage feel.

Details: The nails were naturally rounded for a feminine finish.

More new releases from e.l.f.

Yesterday I posted pics of the new e.l.f. Pressed Mineral Eyeshadows. Thanks to reader CiCiSparkles21 for the heads-up about those, and also for alerting us to the fact that e.l.f. released two more new products!

(Note: If you're thinking of placing an e.l.f. order anytime soon, be sure to check out CiCi's comments on the You Tell Me page, which you can access via the top menu bar of this blog, for lots of new e.l.f. codes.)

First let's take a look at the new baked eyeshadow palettes:

Fashion Week: Essie on the Runway

Aside from the Fashion Week collections that hit the drugstores each spring and fall, I don't do much coverage of Fashion Week here on Nouveau Cheap. But when this info from Essie hit my desk, I wanted to share it with you because I personally find it fun when brands that we can easily purchase at the drugstore are used on the runway.

Take a peek at how Essie was used at the Veronica Beard and Tanya Taylor shows. Maybe these looks can give you a bit of "nailspiration":

My favorite brush cleaner

Psssst: would you like to know what I use to clean my brushes?

Aaaah. I love the smell of clean makeup brushes in the morning...

It's actually not even a "real" brush cleaner, but it's awesome, inexpensive, and it's good for the environment.

Any guesses?

Spotted: New NYC Limited Edition Fashion Predator Collection

NYC has been rocking lately when it comes to LE collections (Peach Sparkle from the Summer LE collection still makes me swoon and of course I'm still loving that red shadow from the Halloween collection). So here's another new collection that we might want to add to the "must-find" list.

A huge thanks to reader KD for this sighting. KD spotted the new NYC Fashion Predator Collection at her local Meijer and was nice enough to share:

(Note: the price tags in this photo are in reference to products on the shelf above this display. NYC products retail for $0.99 - $4.99 each)

I don't believe that we have ever seen NYC offer two different polish formulas in one LE collection before. In this case, we have polishes from both the In A New York Color Minute formula and also the Expert Last formula, which is a formula NYC reserves exclusively for limited edition collections like this one from this summer. I love the Expert Last formula and I hope that NYC eventually makes this part of their permanent collection. But for now, I'll take what I can get!

Lots of new beauty products hitting drugstore shelves these days, and I'm doing my best to help us all keep up with them! It's exhausting when the seasons change and the new crop of products come in, but it's also very exciting...so much possibility and potential, right?

Michelle Obama's nail color: revealed

Wow, you guys are ON it! Right after I posted about the First Lady's fabulous nail color last night, I received a flood of responses on Facebook, Twitter and in the comments letting me know that the shade has just been revealed!

Per Tamron Hall of MSNBC (who Mr. G happens to have a huge crush on, by the way), the mystery nail color is:

SHARE:

The First Lady wears gray nail polish

Regardless of your political persuasion, I think the one thing we can all agree on (maybe?) is that Michelle Obama rocked some awesome nail polish last night. I love that instead of a predictable shade like salmon or nude, she opted for more of a nontraditional bluish-gray shade that tied into the bluish-gray accents in her dress:

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the White House has not officially revealed the exact brand or shade.

UPDATE: The nail polish that Mrs. Obama was wearing last night has been revealed. Click here for details.

But...here are some (possible) clues:
  • The dress she wore for last night's DNC Convention speech was designed by Tracy Reese (who of course partners regularly with Sally Hansen to create her own limited edition Sally Hansen Tracy Reese nail colors each season).

What do you think the First Lady was wearing on her nails last night?

Note: this post is about nail polish and nothing more. This is not a political blog, so please limit your comments to nail polish--there are lots of places on the internet where you can debate political ideologies but this is not one of them.

Glitches, fixes and comments, oh my!

Some not-so-fun-or-glamourous things to discuss here on the blog today, so let me try to keep this as short and sweet and possible:

  • Google Reader and Facebook link issues. Thanks to many of you for letting me know that if you're trying to access this blog using Google Chrome, and you're clicking a link via Google Reader or Facebook, the link might redirect you to the Google homepage instead of to my blog post. I'm so sorry about that, and please know that I'm trying to fix this glitch. In the meantime, you can try using another browser like Firefox or Safari and that should work just fine.

  • Ongoing search bar issues. I am well aware of the fact that the Google-powered search bar at the top of my blog doesn't always work for Internet Explorer users. Over the years, I've tried a zillion different search bar applications, and Google is by far the most accurate and comprehensive when it comes to searching deep into my archives. So until I can fix this glitch for IE users, here's my solution: if you use Internet Explorer and you want to search my blog, just go to google.com and type "nouveaucheap" + whatever you're searching for. This should bring up the exact (or similar) results that you'd get if you were able to use the Google search bar that's embedded into my blog.

  • "For New Readers" and "Shopping Tips" pages not loading. Thanks to all of the readers who took the time to let me know that two of the tabs on the upper menu bar of this blog ("For New Readers" and "Shopping Tips") have not been loading lately. I apologize for this, and just fixed the issue. Both pages load fine now, so if you click on those pages regularly for info, they're working again!

  • Comments, comments, comments. I've had the same comment policy in place on this blog since early 2010. However, I have updated it recently by adding a new subsection regarding the You Tell Me page. If you're new to the blog, you can check out my comment policy or any of the other policies pertaining to this blog by clicking the "Policies" link on the top menu bar, right between the "About/Contact" tab and "Press" tab. (PS: the "Press" tab is not for members of the press, it's actually the one spot where I share when Nouveau Cheap has been mentioned in the press...just in case you're curious).

  • Speaking of comments. The ongoing issue with double-comments doesn't seem to be going away any time soon. I realize that this is frustrating for you and I wish I could fix it (believe me, I've tried). Since I moderate my comments, I'm able to sometimes catch double-posts and delete the second (or third) comment, but sometimes I don't always catch them. So please do not feel bad if you double-comment and I don't catch it. I'm in NO way upset when I see double-comments because I'm grateful to receive comments in general. And the fact that you're concerned enough about leaving a comment here that you post it twice is something I'm grateful for and appreciate very much!

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this long and admittedly boring post.

Spotted: Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure polishes for $0.99 each

Attention California, Nevada, Arizona and Texas readers: guess what? Reader my mom spotted Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure nail polishes at a local 99-Cent Only store here in San Diego!

My mom, who is 72 years young and has a thing for glitter polishes, recently made this discovery and didn't even call me to tell me, can you believe it? I was over visiting her and my dad yesterday and commented on the new polish she was wearing, and it was only then that she enlightened me to this deal!

My mom found Sally Hansen 419 Hidden Treasure (not to be confused with the original Hidden Treasure) and 414 Cherry Cherry Bang Bang for, of course, $0.99 each at 99-Cent Only.

My mom, proudly showing off her find (she's wearing two coats of 419 Hidden Treasure in these photos, and wanted me to tell you that she didn't use a base coat or top coat and has gotten five days of wear so far without any chips--she's seriously impressed!):

Thanks so much to reader CiCiSparkles21 for the update that the big e.l.f. Labor Day Sale has been revealed and is now underway:

You've got about 11 hours left (from the time of this blog post) to get free shipping at e.l.f. with any $15+ order. Enter code LABORDAY at checkout. Ends tonight (9/3) at midnight Pacific.

And thanks to reader Maureen for the heads-up that Eve Pearl will be on HauteLook tomorrow, 9/4, beginning at 8AM Pacific. Obviously we won't know what products will be offered until the sale goes live, so if you're an Eve Pearl fan, log on bright and early tomorrow for the best selection.

Sidenote: I've been wanting to try the famous Eve Pearl Salmon Concealer for years now, but I've missed it the last few times it was on HauteLook (and the full price of $37 is out of my budget). I really hope it's available tomorrow for a good price--do any of you here own it? Thoughts? And if you bought it when it was on HauteLook the last time, what was the sale price? Thanks!

Lipstick League Question of the Week:

What compelled you to start a beauty blog?

G's answer: I've been obsessed with all things beauty-related since I was about ten years old (which was a long time ago--1980 to be exact). I never thought anyone else would care about my opinions of beauty products but, a few years ago, I used to work for a company where I was lucky enough to work with some amazing women. We all become quite close after working together for a while, and just like most offices, we'd go to lunch and chit chat about non-work-related things. Over the years, I came to be known as the go-to girl for info on beauty products, and they gave me the office nickname of "beauty guru". I used to write these long, detailed emails to my colleagues, answering questions about products, giving advice, etc. Eventually, one colleague in particular urged me to start a beauty blog. And it was because of her insistence that I finally took the plunge in 2009 and created Nouveau Cheap. I can't thank her enough for not giving up on me, because starting this blog was one of the best things I've ever done. Otherwise, how would I have met all of YOU?

If you have a beauty blog, how and why did you start it?

The Weekly Drugstore Makeup Sales (9/2 - 9/8)

A lot of us have been hoping for Maybelline sales at the drugstores to go along with LE Fashion Week Collection, and we finally got them this week. All three chains are running Maybelline sales, so haul away! (My suggestions? The Olive Martini Quad and the Barely Beige Color Tattoo.)

For those new to drugstore sales, when I indicate a "limit" next to a rewards offer, that limit is only in reference to the rewards, NOT to the amount of products you can buy. For example, at Rite Aid this week, Maybelline is BOGO1/2OFF and you get $5+UP when you spend $15. The limit on this offer is 4, which means that you get the $5+UP a total of four times. The "limit 4" does not apply to how many products you can buy--you can buy as many as you'd like and get the BOGO1/2OFF deal, but you'll only get the +UP Rewards a total of four times. I tend to get asked this question a lot, so I hope this clears it up.
