Review: Maybelline Limited Edition Baby Lips in Coral Crush and Twinkle

So I finally found the display for the limited edition Baby Lips lip balms at a local CVS, and I grabbed the last remaining Coral Crush/Twinkle duo and ran for the register! I've been wanting this duo ever since I posted about it back in the middle of October, so I thought I'd give you my thoughts on it in case you're wondering if it's worth the hunt:

Maybelline Baby Lips Limited Edition 2-Pack in Coral Crush & Twinkle
(retail: $7.99 at CVS and Walgreens)
Keep reading for my full review...

This review is just going to cover the scent/flavor/color of these two Baby Lips shades. I reviewed the entire Baby Lips line back in December of 2011, so if you'd like to know my thoughts on the consistency, moisturization, etc., please see my original review here.

Before you "break the surface" of these balms, they look quite dry:

But after they come in contact with your skin, you can see that their true texture becomes visible:

Let's start with Coral Crush:

The swatch you see above was taken after I ran Coral Crush across my skin several times. The peachy-orange tint in this lip balm is very subtle, but you can build it for a little more intensity. I don't think you're going to get a bright orange color pay-off unless your natural lips are very fair. My lips have medium pigmentation and it takes over a dozen swipes for me to see any color at all, and even then it's very subtle. On the plus side, I think one of you mentioned that Coral Crush smells and tastes like orange Starburst candies, and you were so right! If you like orange Starbursts, I'm betting you're going to love the scent/flavor of this lip balm. The flavor and fragrance both subside within a few minutes though--I wouldn't consider this lip balm heavily scented or flavored.

Now for Twinkle:

There's no color to this one, but it does have some very, very fine, subtle shimmer (I'm talking subtle enough for a very young girl to wear without raising any eyebrows). The best part about Twinkle is definitely the flavor/fragrance. Do you love peach Jolly Ranchers? If so, you're probably going to love Twinkle. To me, the scent and flavor are very reminiscent of peach-flavored Jolly Ranchers, although I also get a hint of plain tart frozen yogurt (specifically the plain tart flavor they sell at Yogurtland, which I happen to love).

So...are these worth the hunt?

Well if you already love/collect Baby Lips lip balms, then I'd say they'd make a nice addition to your collection. If you like orange and peach candies, then I think you'll get a kick out of both of these balms. But if you're looking for a nicely-pigmented sheer orange lip color, you're not going to get it with Coral Crush. It's very subtle, although it is buildable (but even after building, don't expect intense pigmentation).

Do you already own any of the Maybelline Baby Lips Limited Edition shades? If so, what do you think of them? Don't forget that Maybelline's going to release two additional LE shades soon (I can't wait to see those in person).

  2. I found these at Walgreens a couple weeks ago (after reading your news that they were out). You're right about the light color, etc., but they are definitely a welcome addition to my massive lip balm collection. Now I'm on the hunt for the new colors you'd blogged about last week.

    1. Thanks Heidi, for confirming you didn't get strong color payoff from this either. They're fun though! :)

  3. I have been hunting this duo down like crazy but all I can find is the duo with Quenched and Pink Punch! If you found it recently then there might be hope for me as well! Yay! Lol.

  4. Thanks for the review! I'm glad I'm not missing out on much.. I thought Coral Crush would be more pigmented but guess not! My lips are also of medium pigmentation but I don't think I'd swipe it on 12x just for a coral color. The CVS here sold out of all 4 packs of this duo before the sale this week.

    1. You're welcome! And yep, I don't think you'd get good color payoff either. :(

  5. I bought all 3 of the LE packs because of all the great things I heard about them. Unfortunately, they did not work for me! I was SO disappointed to discover that they actually dried my lips out :( Guess I will be sticking with my EOS, which I LOVE.

    1. So funny that you mention that. It seems that the people who love eos don't love these, and vice versa!

    2. I love both EOS and Baby Lips, I use the EOS at night and when I wake up in the morning my lips still feel moisturized.. Both are great products. But then I love Lip Balms lol

  6. Due to the printed ads Maybelline has put out featuring the Coral Crush shade, I was hoping *that* was what you'd get... now, I'm perfectly happy giving up the search for this elusive shade as it doesn't seem to be at all what I thought.

Now, if I could find a lip balm-type product (as opposed to a lip stick) that produced *that* kind of color payoff, and actually moisturized my lips (lack sunscreen isn't a deal breaker,) I'd be all over it.

    1. Maybe try the Carmex Moisture Plus tinted balms I reviewed a while back? They are very moisturizing and have good color payoff:

    2. Have you tried the Palladio tinted lip balms? I really like them and the orange one may work for you. They are about the same price as Baby Lips, may be worth a try!

  9. Good to know, G. because if you believe the ads in the fashion magazine you would think you would get an almost lipstick like color. I think the Baby Lips are ok, but so definately on the look out for Coral Crush, now that I see the review I will pass this one up. I wanted it for the color!

  14. I got this pair and love them both. Coral Crush appears subtle on my medium color lips, too... but it's a nice shade of popsicle orange/coral. I like it. Twinkle is quite a surprise, actually... it gives a special shine when I'm outdoors. You know that moist/glossy look you want in your lips when you have no makeup on?? Well, at least that's what I go for. That's exactly what I get with Twinkle.

  15. I LOVE the Baby Lips products. They hydrate my lips but leave a cute colour and scent behind. The ones i am currently using came in a 2 pack. Unfortunatly, I can't remember the names. But it was a Barbie pink and a soft pink.I love the colours and I am currently in the want to try the dark red (cherry i think). I would definatly buy the whole collection

  16. I just found all of the 5 limited edition baby lips shades at CVS earlier today! I'm so glad! I've been on the hunt for these for ages! I have 3 limited edition ones so far, and I'm going back to buy more today!

  17. Omygosh, G! Okay, I'm going to be a complete dork-weirdo here and comment on something that has nothing to do with the Baby Lips- I love tart-flavored frozen yogurt too!!! It's my favorite flavor- and I love that Yogurtland has it, because so few yogurt places actually offer it.
Okay, that's the end of my awkward comment. Next time I'll be consistent to topic, I promise! =)
