My current favorite lipstick: revealed (and reviewed)

Thanks for all of the great guesses on yesterday's "mystery lipstick" post. It's now time for the big reveal. If you'll recall, the only clue I gave you was that this lipstick retails for under $7...

Keep reading to see if you were right...

Congratulations to reader Emma, who was the only one to correctly guess that this is NYX Matte Lipstick in Whipped Caviar!

NYX Matte Lipstick in Whipped Caviar
(retail: $6 on the NYX website, 0.14 oz)

Here's a swatch that shows you what it looks in direct light and also in indirect light:

Here's why I'm absolutely obsessed with this color:

First of all, I love mattes in the fall and winter. I've been wearing matte lipsticks since the 1990s and I swear to you, this formula is one of the most non-drying I have ever tried. It's like wrapping your lips in a soft, comfy sweater! It just feels so creamy and smooth (if it looks drying in the pic above, that's only because my lips are currently chapped due to the weather and everything looks drying in extreme close-up on my lips). But you'll have to trust me here--I know drying matte formulas and this is not one of them.

As far as matte lipsticks go, this one also has incredible staying power on my lips. I can put it on in the early morning and I can still see it by lunchtime. Also, it wears down evenly (no ring-around-the-lips).

And let's not forget the COLOR! I'd called Whipped Caviar a pinky-brown-nude, but it's on the lighter end of the spectrum (it's definitely not a medium-toned pinky-brown-nude when it's on my lips). It's as close as I can come to wearing a full-on nude. On my NC20 skintone it looks nude-ish, but it's got enough pink in it to keep me from looking pale and sickly. It's my number one go-to shade when I'm wearing a smoky eye:

In the above pic, I paired Whipped Caviar with the shimmery/smoky look I did in my review for the e.l.f. Natural Eye palette. I think that wearing a blush that has pink undertones really pulls the look together. For me, this is as nude as I can go when it comes to my lips, and I LOVE that it's just nude enough. (PS: I'm wearing CoverGirl Simply Ageless Blush in Lush Berry on my cheeks, in case you're wondering.)

I also love wearing Whipped Caviar on light or no-makeup days. It really pulls a light-makeup-look together and gives me a much more polished and put-together appearance, as opposed to wearing a clear or sheer gloss. It's really a go-to shade for me in almost any situation--I can't think of another lipstick that I've purchased in the past year that is this versatile for my needs and my skintone. LOVE it. Oh, and it's essentially fragrance- and flavor-free.

Do you own any NYX Matte Lipsticks? If so, how do you like them? I'd love to try additional shades in the future, but I'm just so stuck on this one, I haven't even though about venturing out yet!

You can purchase NYX Matte Lipsticks on the NYX website, Ulta (in-store and online), Cherry Culture and various beauty supply stores throughout the nation. As of the time of this post, NYX Matte Lipsticks are currently on sale at Cherry Culture for $4.50.

This product was purchased with personal funds.

  1. Looks like a big winner, I like how satiny it is, yet still matte. This shade really flatters you!

  2. I love NYX Matte lipsticks too! I think they're one of the best matte formulations out there. I have Whipped Caviar, Strawberry Daiquiri and Shocking Pink. I really want to get Pure Red, Indie Flick and Alabama.

  3. It's beautiful! To me it looks an awful like Tarte's matte lip surgence in Exposed, which is my fave lippie right now.

  4. It looks lovely on you! Unfortunately, I haven't found any NYX lip formulas to work on me, including the matte lipsticks - I have Indie Flick (gorgeous color!), but I found it kind of chalky, didn't last very long, and wore off unevenly, leaving a ring around my mouth. The round lipsticks don't work for me either (too slippery), but I know lots of people just love them. Just shows YMMV, I guess.

  9. I am in LOVE with NYX matte lipstick in Shocking Pink! I wear it on days when I need a mood boost and it perks me right up :) It's a bold but surprisingly very wearable pink that would look stunning on any skin tone.

    1. When I saw shocking pink in person it looked way too blue-pink for me (boo!) But it's so pretty!

  12. I actually bought a NYX matte lipstick right around the time they were released. I'm a fan as well! I have For Audrey which is a "mid-tone blue pink," but a quick look on the site and it seems like the name has been changed to just Audrey. The swatch is totally off too, because I don't think of this as a very bright pink.

I agree with everything you said, I'm really impressed by its staying power and don't find it drying either. I prefer it to the matte lip cream even though I like those too.

This is one of those lipsticks I always forget I own and then I dig it out and wear it nonstop till I misplace it again! haha

    1. So glad to hear you've had the same experience with these!

And I wonder if they changed the name because of the China Glaze polish named For Audrey? I know that polish came out before the lipstick. Hum....

  13. Gah! I KNEW it was going to be a NYX Matte Lipstick, but the comments made me think otherwise, so I really thought it was going to be E.L.F! Haha.. Anyways, that was fun. :) It's such a pretty brownie-pink! I'll have to check it out.

  14. Does anyone know what the scent on these are like? Scent and taste can really determine how often I reach for a color (I almost never touch my Covergirl, Maybelline, and Rimmel lipsticks for this reason--whereas Revlon gets a lot of wear).

    1. I address the scent and flavor in my review above. Hope that helps.

  15. This looks great. I love the shade, but would need one that is a bit darker for me, since I have darker skin. It's so hard for me to find a good nude lipstick that doesn't look chaulky or too orangey. I've always wanted that good pinky/brown shade that Halle Berry wears, but it's so tough to find. I reminds me of my search for the perfect maroon shade in the early 90's, leading me to Verushka by MAC.

  16. OMG, want. I LOVE matte lipsticks. Matter of fact, I go against the grain whenever I read something about wearing gloss to look younger ... I find I look like I'm trying too hard when I wear gloss, and love how I look with a matte lip color SO much better.

    Must run to Ulta STAT.

  17. I own a few but Pure Red is my go-to shade. I've had at least 2 or 3 customers at work ask me what I'm wearing and where they can buy it because they love it so much on me.

  18. I have three NYX matte lipsticks so far (Whipped Caviar, Audrey, and Merlot), and my favorite is definitely Merlot!! You should check it out. (also this is my first comment, yay!)

  19. Perfect shade - I have to look for that one in the tiny bit of NYX we have in our drug store. Shades like this are great to have a few around because they work with any outfit and for any occasion. I have never been good about stashing my 'that day I am wearing this color' in my purse to go with me. I end up with about 10 shades in my purse and never can find 'the' one I want. So now I try to only carry one neutral with me. ...that is unless I am wearing my fav red, then it HAS to come with me.

  20. looks great on you! I can't do mattes whatsoever but the shade reminds me of MAC Impressive Cremesheen and Rimmel Kate #8 (or 7, the pinky nude, the exact # esxapes me atm.) both my favorite shades for smoky or neutral eyes or simply when I can't figure what to wear. The Rimmel is slightly pinker than Impressive and neither are drying on me which is a dealbreaker this time of year. Shades like this always make me feel more 'finished' because I don't care for 'true' nude lips (aka the color of concealer) on me, I HAVE to have some color! :)

  21. I've gone back and forth on purchasing this several times! Sometimes brown-nude shades like this look very odd on me, and sometimes they're really flattering; the only place near me that carries this line of lipsticks is a juniors clothing store, and I don't trust their testers enough to want to use it on my face! After seeing how beautiful this is on you, though, I may have to go swatch it one last time and take a chance on buying it!

  22. I knew I recognized that packaging! :) I have this lipstick in Merlot and I love it.

  23. It is practically a dupe for my favorite Chanel color, Cashmere!
