The Wednesday Question

What types of beauty products do you feel are underrepresented in drugstores these days?

I would like to see more eyeshadow primers and face primers at the drugstore level. There are some brands that, for whatever reason, have never released primers even though they offer shadows and foundations. I would also like to see more cream shadows that have excellent staying power--I'm always sad when a cream shadow hits the market that creases and fades within just a few hours of application. For haircare, I would like to see more products geared toward those of us who have oily roots and dry ends. So many haircare lines have their products broken up into "moisture" and "clean" categories, but a lot of us need both.

  1. Linear holographic nail polishes! Not only are those under-represented at drugstores...they aren't represented at all. If a drugstore nail polish line claims to be "holographic," usually it means that the polish, at best, has holographic particles, but isn't a true linear.

  2. Interesting neutral eyeliners-- many mid/high-end brands have a great array of charcoals, variuos shades of taupes and browns, black infused with variously colored shimmer, etc, but apart from a few offerings from Physician's Formula there isn't much beyond beyond black/brown in the neutral eyeliner market.

  3. It's hard for me to find drugstore products for oily skin. I would love to see more products for oily roots and dry ends too. Also, more nude and earth tone nail polishes.

  4. real BB creams.

100% argan oil, not just argan oil infused.

completely waterproof felt tip eye liner.

  5. foundation for olive skintones, right now I use Revlon colorstay and color-correct it with a mineral foundation in my skin tone -medium Olive

  6. I definitely agree with you on everything you listed. The cream eyeshadows especially hit a nerve. I was so excited for the Color Tattoos. But those crease on me too! It's so annoying! Although, that didn't stop me from going on a crazy goose chase for the new LE shades. (Only ended up finding Gold Shimmer). The only creams that truly do not crease on me are MUFE Aqua Creams and Urban Decay shadow sticks. I may try the Milani pencils when I'm finished with my shadow sticks.

Also, tinted moisturizers seem to be a little lackluster in the drugstores. The Loreal Beautifier BB seems to be decent. But the problem with all the drugstore TMs is that their color ranges are so small. Yes, they're on the lower coverage side, but there is still coverage. More often than not, they're very pink toned. It leaves those with yellow toned skin out of luck. I know there are ways to combat this, yellow toned powder etc...but that's the thing. You don't want to feel like you're compromising. I don't really care how much money I'm saving if I need to do so much work to make a drugstore product work for me.

    1. If you are looking for a yellow toned TM try WnW.. I really like theirs. Better for oily skin than most. I also really like the Loreal Beautifier BB for reference, but it takes me longer to apply due to the consistency. Have you tried a good primer under the CT's? I wore gold shimmer alone the other day and it went all day, no problem. They crease like crazy on me without primer. Keep looking for the Beige one, it's a keeper for sure, they really need to add it to the permanent collection.

  7. Highlighters! I really don' think most drugstore brands have anything that could be used as a highlighter, and if they do there's a good chance it's a glitter bomb!

    1. If you have a Walmart near you give the hard candy baked bronzer in tiki a try it is better than my Mac highlighter ! :)

  8. Subtle highlighters (anything with the word "radiance" or "glow" tends to be a glitter bomb), nude eyeliners

  9. I wish there were larger eye shadow palettes (more than 4 eye shadows!). I either have to shop online or pay a lot for department brand palettes - not that I don't like either, I just wish there was an easily accessible, cheaper option.

    1. Maybelline has a few larger palettes.. but they are usually on the very bottom shelf hiding. I have a personal preference for quads and trios, especially well thought out ones where the colors really complement each other.. simplifies things.

  10. This may fall into the primer category, but I'd like to see more mattifying/pore minimizing products for oily skin.

  11. More colors of face/skin products.. and more testers. A good flesh toned liner. Decent shadow primer. Good brushes.

I really like Suave professionals almond and shea butter shampoo and conditioner, it's a great balance between clean and moisture. Gets all the oil and residue without stripping or drying. Very inexpensive. Also makes a great body wash (shampoo) and shave cream (conditioner). Since I have dry hair and oily skin I follow with a dab of oilve oil mixed with aloe vera gel to add moisture on the ends, and give a little weight without any greasy, sticky, or crunchy. Also helps if you concentrate the shampoo at the scalp, and conditioner at the ends.

  12. waterproof eyebrow pencils that really stay on through sweating and wiping

  13. Oh, I have one! I want more lip stains! I love them, but the drugstore versions are pretty lackluster where they exist. Also, liquid lipstick. I don't think there are really any at the drugstore that I can think of. I love Shiseido Lacquer Rouge, but $25 a tube is pretty rich for my blood!

  14. I would love to hear from anyone who has found a light auburn eyebrow pencil from a drugstore brand--they do not ever seem to have this color at the drugstore--only 'high end'.

  15. I want to see a cleansing oil, then i don't have to go to ulta or mac and spend $25!

  17. Another vote for more neutral cream eyeshadows. I'd also like to see a dupe for Mally Lip Fence made without parabens.

  18. Oil cleansers! I use baby oil now but would love to find one that has an emulsifier in it.

  19. I really wish there was a makeup setting spray for oily skin like the urban decay deslick Which is way out of my price range. I have tried the DIY versions of makeup setting sprays on you tube but they make me very oily :/

  20. Wow. This is a good question.

    Testers.

    Samples.

Drugstores need to carry more shades for darker brown women. When I say shades I mean an array not the usual 2 shades of brown makeup.

Darker concealer L'Oreal, Maybelline, and Revlon don't have any. Covergirl had their Queen Concealer, but it was too yellow for me. So Drugstores need to start carrying, Iman, Black Opal, Zuri, Posner, Ruby Kisses, Kiss New York, and Black Radiance.

Mattifying gel face lotion. I saw the most awesome product it was Garnier Even & Matte but it was sold in Africa and not here.

Real dark spot corrector without hydroquinone! I want to see some products with Kojic Acid, Alpha Arbutin, Bearberry Extract, Licorice Root Extract, and kojic dipalmitate.

Real natural lip colors for dark skinned women with a pink/red tint. Our lips aren't just brown. They're usually two toned.

More hair care brands for women of color that are complete.

Sulfur soap. (I don't know how those managed to disappear from the shelves.)

    Flesh toned lip liners.

Real BB creams that come in darker shades.

  21. I use and like the monistat chafing gel to powder as a makeup primer. It works great and is cheap.
A good eye primer would be nice. I love UD but it's so expensive. Some ppl say ELFs eye primer is pretty good.
I'm still on the looked for a creamy natural eye shadow. I bought a quad of Revlon creamy eyeshow in some neutral shades for everyday wear though and have been using that daily. It does crease some but since the colors are light it's not very noticeable. Gives my eyes a bright, fresh look.
I like the Suave Almond and Shea butter shampoo also, it's cone free I believe.
For dry shampoo,.which I use every other day I rally like Got2Be, they also have a dry conditioner out now that I really like.
Some good gel blushes like the Tarte cheek.stains that I lurve!

  22. A finishing product that's silicone-based and replaces powder. I use one now, but I've never seen one at a drugstore.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Nude lipsticks - like a real range and nude nailpolishes.
