UPDATE: Walgreens Balance Rewards Program

I received some updated information directly from Walgreens yesterday regarding the new Balance Rewards program so I wanted to share this information with you as quickly as possible (click here for my original post if you'd like an overview of this new program). Please take a moment to read through this information if you're planning on joining this new program:

UPDATE

Online enrollment for Balance Rewards will now begin after Labor Day on Thursday, September 6. Beginning that day, customers can join Balance Rewards online at Walgreens.com/balance or via the Walgreens mobile app. The national launch of Balance Rewards is Sunday, September 16, when customers can easily enroll in-store, online or via the mobile app and begin earning points and special savings, and start redeeming rewards.

Balance Rewards 10 Million Point Giveaway

For those taking advantage of the online enrollment period, Walgreens is running the Balance Rewards 10 Million Point Giveaway September 6 - 15th. During this time, customers who join Balance Rewards online or through the mobile app will have a chance to enter to win. Customers can earn additional entries into the sweepstakes by referring friends and family to the program. 10 Grand Prize Winners will each win 1 million points in their Balance Rewards account that can be redeemed at Walgreens stores, Walgreens.com, or Duane Reade stores.

Register Rewards

We’ve received a lot of questions about Register Rewards over the past week and also seen a lot of misinformation about the program online. To clarify, Register Rewards will continue in its current form for the foreseeable future. Register Rewards is a couponing program while Balance Rewards is a comprehensive loyalty program that offers exclusive savings and the opportunity to earn points and instantly redeem rewards.

Additional information regarding the Balance Rewards program:

Instant Points

• Members can instantly earn and redeem points for
thousands of items in store and online.

• Members will earn points for activities that help them
stay well, like Walk with Walgreens, immunizations
and — where states allow — for prescriptions.

• Members receive exclusive access to the Walgreens
online Pharmacy Chat service, 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week, 365 days a year.

Endless Rewards

• Members can redeem points immediately in-store or
online for a little something special or hold off until they
have earned more points for an even greater reward.

• Points will not expire as long as members remain active
by shopping at Walgreens at least once every six months
and redeem their points within three years.

• Points go further as you earn more.

DUANE READE

• The Balance Rewards program is active at both
Duane Reade and Walgreens. Duane Reade
customers can now earn and redeem points at
more than 7,900 stores nationwide.

• Customers can join Balance Rewards at any
Duane Reade or Walgreens store at the checkout
counter, pharmacy and photo kiosk or online at
duanereade.com/balance.

• Duane Reade FlexRewards program points will be
converted to Balance Rewards and become available
when customers join in the new program.

Restrictions apply see terms and conditions.

Due to state and federal laws, points cannot be earned on some items. Points will not be awarded to
anyone who currently is or was at any time in 6 months prior to purchasing Pharmacy Items covered by
Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare or other government-funded healthcare program. Pharmacy Items must be
purchased at participating Walgreens Drugstore, Rxpress, Duane Reade, or Walgreens Pharmacy locations
(“Participating Stores”) to earn points. Excludes Pharmacy Items purchased from AR, NJ or NY pharmacies
and prescriptions transferred to a Participating Store located in AL, MS, OR or PR.
For terms and conditions for full details on all point earnings and redemptions, visit Walgreens.com/Balance.

  3. Will the number of points we earn be deducted if we use coupons?

  4. I can't wait to sign up for this program. I must prefer Walgreen's over CVS or Rite-Aid and have been waiting a very long time for a program like this!

  5. I am glad to see the Register Rewards are not going away. That is what was communicated by store employees.

  6. The September 30th ad is the ad that will require the loyalty card for what is now going to be termed 'Loyalty Pricing' instead of 'ad pricing'.

  10. Awesome! I have a bunch of points on my Duane Reade FlexRewards card and wondered what would happen to them under the new Balance Rewards program. It's good to know that they'll be converted and I'll be able to use them at Walgreens stores now too :)

    1. Mimsy - how did the Duane Reade's Flex program work before?
Did you get points for purchases based on the amount you spent? Or only on items that were flagged as reward items that week?
I was disappointed to learn that I won't get any points for my purchases at Walgreens unless it's a particular item that's advertised to give points for that specific week. (I spend about $400 a month at Walgreens, but I could still earn zero points.)
