Review: Freeman Feeling Beautiful Dead Sea Minerals Facial Anti-Stress Mask

If you're stressed out, and looking at pictures of underwater dogs doesn't make you feel better (seriously, how could it not?), you might want to try a nice, affordable facial mask. Let's see how the new (previously only available in single-serving packets) Freeman Feeling Beautiful Dead Sea Minerals Facial Anti-Stress Mask worked for me, shall well?

Freeman Feeling Beautiful Dead Sea Minerals Facial Anti-Stress Mask
(retail: $3.99, 6 oz)

With a 4.8 out of 5 star average rating on Ulta.com, a 4.4 out of 5 average rating on Makeup Alley and an award from TotalBeauty.com under its belt, this mask has made quite the name for itself since its release. I received this product for review a while back, and I've used it about every two weeks for the past few months.

I've said in the past that products that contain clay (bentonite and kaolin) work extremely well for my oily skin, because clay really absorbs oils and has a way of , for lack of a better word, sucking the oil out from deep down in my pores. So I was happy to see that bentonite and kaolin are the 2nd and 3rd ingredients in this product. (There are also two forms of parabens in this formula, which I wanted to note in case you're trying to avoid those.)

The product itself is a beautiful teal color (hey, I'm a girl...color matters!). The texture is thick, but not difficult to spread across the skin. In fact, it's much easier to spread than other masks of this nature that I've used over the years.

No visitors for the next 20 minutes, please!

I like to keep this mask on for about 20 minutes. As with most masks, you should keep this on your skin until the mask is completely dry (depending on the temperature, this should take about 10 minutes) but I like it keep it on a little longer, until I can't move my mouth or wrinkle my nose, because I just want those clays to "suck" as much oil from my skin as possible.

Removal is extremely easy. I hate masks that leave me at my bathroom sink for 20 minutes, trying to get the gunk out of my hairline. I don't get that from this mask one bit--it rinses easily and effortlessly, which I very much appreciate.

The fragrance is also quite pleasant and not overpowering. It has a clean, sweet, slightly aquatic scent to it.

After removal, my skin feels fresh, clean and smooth. It doesn't feel dry or tight, and I've never once thought, "Oh no, my skin is parched now" after using this product (note: I have extremely oily skin, which is even worse in the summer). Only once did I encounter a breakout after using this mask, and it was a small one. For those who don't use masks, this is not uncommon. Masks tend to "purge" the skin, bringing impurities to the surface. I've broken out many times after using other masks and I basically expect it after a "deep cleaning". So I was happy that I only broke out once after using this product, and again, it was minor (two small flare-ups on one of my cheeks).

Who might like this mask:
Those with oily-to-very oily skin. This mask is a miracle-worker if your skin is like mine (very oily), especially now, in the dog days of summer. I don't know about you, but when it gets hot, I feel like I've got a constant layer of grime on my face. Residue from sunscreens, etc. can build up to the point where I just wish I could scrub my face raw sometimes. Thankfully, I don't have to, because this mask soaks up all that ickiness and basically "resets" my skin back to zero every time I use it.

Who might not like this mask:
If you have dry skin, or ever normal-bordering-on-dry, this mask might be too much for you, especially in the cooler months. Basically, if your skin doesn't have much oil to be absorbed in the first place, and you treasure the oil your skin does produce, I would skip this product and go for a mask that adds moisture instead. Also, those who are extremely sensitive to fragrance might want to skip this one, although I don't find the fragrance strong or overpowering (I know that some of you have to avoid fragrance altogether in your skincare, so that's why I'm adding this to the "might not like" list).

FINAL VERDICT: I see now why this product is so universally loved. For those with oily-to-very-oily skin, I think you'll be extremely pleased with how effective this product is at absorbing oils and giving your pores a good cleaning. The high clay content in this mask makes it ideal for my oily skin, and I love that, unlike other clay-based masks, it removes easily with water (no struggling at the sink). For $3.99, I think it's a great product to use in the summertime when you're feeling stressed and want to get that icky summertime "film" off your face.

  1. I use their masks religiously. The pineapple exfoliating mask is great, and smells so good.

  2. At least us greasy faced ones won't get wrinkles! So I'm told.

    1. More slow to wrinkle...you still get your basic crow's feet and forehead lines..but at least in my family (all oily skin), you don't look like the crypt keeper at 70.

    2. I agree. We are slower to wrinkle (thanks, mom!!). ;)

  3. I wrote this on facebook, but I'll share here too. This, and the avocado clay mask, are my favorites. I've got some CVS ECBs so I may see if they have this one and buy a bottle. I hated having a bunch of individual packets laying around.

  4. I, too, hate having the packets - what're you supposed to do with the extra that you don't use? I always put them in a zippy bag, but then I worried that it's effectiveness was in question, so I threw them out. Ugh! Yay - no more. Actually on my way to WMart, so I think I'll give it a go - my skin is not too oily, but sweat has been my constant (and I mean right-out-of-the-shower-with-a-fan-blowing-on-me&still-sweating! que horrible!) companion for the past couple of months and it's really screwing up my skin, in spite of my best efforts to keep it under wraps. Hoping this will help purge. Thanks for the review, as always, G. (I ALWAYS read them, even if I don't comment!)

Oh, and if I can pose a question for you & your readers: how in the double hockey sticks is everyone dealing with the heat/sweat issue and their skincare/make-up routine? As I mentioned above, sweating is a major issue for me - right out of the gate from the shower, which screws up moisturizing, bb cream, forget powder... and with a fan blowing on me to cool me down not helping, I'm kinda in need of help. Putting "my face on" when I finally get to work is not really an option, so I really could use some sweatproof my face tips (I'm already using Milani's infinite eyeliner (bought after your review & that i love now that i've really figured out how to use it well) and waterproof mascara), especially with a bb cream base and powder. ANY THING would be a help! Thanks in advance!!!

    1. I'm afraid I won't be much help, Jenn, but my solution is that I don't even try to put on anything more than sunscreen, my eyebrows and lipstick. And of course my nails are always done. Perspiration is a MAJOR issue for me, and that's with the AC blasting. It doesn't help that I live in Florida, either. Hopefully, you reside in a state/region that has 4 actual seasons!

    2. Here's what I've been doing: I use a good face primer and a tinted moisturizer with spf (or BB cream) so that I can skip the extra layers of moisturizer and sunscreen (unless i'm going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time, in which case I use a separate sunscreen).

Then I use a long-wear concealer and an oil control powder.

For eyes, I use a long-wear cream shadow and a long-wear liquid liner on just the upper lash line and apply a water proof mascara (or one that I know won't smudge in the heat) and apply it to just my upper lashes.

For cheeks I use a cream blush and top it with a powder blush for extra insurance.

For lips, I either wear a stain or tinted balm, and that's it!

This look usually stays put for several hours but I also make sure to keep oil blotting sheets in my purse for touch ups throughout day. :)

  5. I really want to try this now! I love Freeman masks. I can always use another mask to add to my rotation.

  6. I love the color of it too, but I think I'll pass on this because I have reallllly dry skin...I live in Florida and even in the summer, I can try blotting my face with an oil-blotting sheet and absolutely nothing gets on it.

  7. My fav is the Cucumber peel-off mask. I like to peel it off, even though it's kind of weird/icky, LOL. It does leave my skin smooth and clean-feeling. I think the clay based masks are too drying for me =/

  8. I'll be waiting for the next sale on Freeman to try this mask & that pineapple one someone mentioned :-) I've been using the clean+ clear mattifier face wash and I reallynoticed a difference in the amount of oil my skin produces... I would be so happy to find a mask that will also help!

  9. This looks very promising! I have tried the green clay mask before and I love that although it dries my skin almost too much. I may try this!

  10. Does anyone know where i can find this? I looked everywhere from walmart to rite aid and there was nothing =(

  11. Nice review! I've tried several Freeman Masks. I'll have to try this one after I use up my Queene Helene Mint Julep Masque (Which by the way I LOVE) As a fellow oily skin person, I'm always on the hunt for products that work well.

  12. Thanks for the review. I LOVE clay masks, but the current one I am using is kind of expensive. I was thinking of either getting the clay powder itself, but this is tempting to try, as well!

  13. Great review! I just bought this today, and I'm so excited to use it. Quick questions: when you say you used it "every two weeks for the past few months," do you mean once every two weeks? Just want to make sure :)
