Review & Swatches: New Wet n Wild Megashield Lip Colors SPF15

At this point I'm sure most of you have, at the very least, seen some reviews of these new lip colors from Wet n Wild, and I'm sure some of you already own a few. I received all 14 shades for review a while back, but I really wanted to take my time with these and get a feel for each one before I shared my thoughts with you. Now that I've worn all of these colors multiple times (some more often than others) I'm finally ready to give you the low-down!

Wet n Wild Megashield Lip Colors SPF15
(retail: $2.99 each, 0.1 oz)

From Wet n Wild:

Color, comfort, and care! Luxurious color delivers hours of sheer-to-moderate coverage that glides on buttery-soft for a smooth, moist-looking pout. Lips are pampered with Vitamin E, Amino Acids, Avocado Oil, and Rice Bran Oil that moisturize and condition for silky, soft comfort. And with SPF 15, lips are cared for and protected from harmful UVB rays.

Let's get straight to the swatches:

Birthday Suit:
frosty champagne nude

Peachy Keen:
frosty coppery-bronze

Make Me Blush:
similar to Peachy Keen but cooler

Arrest Me Copper:
shimmery copper-brown with very slight golden-green duochrome effect

Of the four shades above, my favorite is Arrest Me Copper. It reminds me of the long-ago-discontinued shade from MAC called Isis because it has that same type of very slight golden-green duochrome effect (Isis was a pale nude shimmer though, so they're not an exact match). If you're normally drawn toward shimmery copper lip colors, I think you'll love this color because it's rich and multi-dimensional in person (you can see the shimmer better in the picture of the tube above).

Bare-ly Legal:
light-medium nude creme

Ring Around The Rosy:
medium chocolate-raisin creme

A Currant Affair:
neutral red creme that leans warm (almost brick)

Of the three shades above, the one I've been wearing the most is A Currant Affair. On my lips (I'm a MAC NC20 and my lips are fairly pigmented), this color comes across as more of a neutral red (not too tomato-y orange but not quite blue-red either). It's almost a brick red, and what I like is that it's not super dark. It's just a really nice, standard go-to red that I find myself reaching for again and again.

Pink Chamagne:
frosty pale champagne-peach

Within These Adobe Walls:
light salmon-pink creme

It's A Girl:
shimmery blue-based pink

Pink Slip:
shimmery medium rose

My favorite of the four shades above is Pink Slip, but only because I can't really pull off light pinks. I find Pink Slip to be very wearable (not too light, not too dark) and would probably work on a variety of different skintones. It's a nice work-friendly shade that would be pretty for spring.

That's Berry Beautiful:
red creme that's cooler than A Currant Affair and more blue-based

Salsa Lessons:
a bright, tomato-red creme with orange/coral undertones

Lolly Popstar:
frosty medium pink that is warmer and darker than It's A Girl

My favorite shade of the three above is That's Berry Beautiful. I love wearing this color in the evening when nothing but a nice, blue-based red creme will do.

Summary
Texture, consistency and pigmentation: The texture of these lip colors is smooth and creamy. Every single one of them glides across the lips like silk without any effort at all. They're lighter on the lips than Revlon Lip Butters, and slicker as well. Pigmentation is superb for all 14 shades. I think Wet n Wild really downplayed the pigmentation of these lip colors when they said they provide "sheer to moderate coverage." These deliver one-stroke-color, meaning that one stroke across the lips yields incredible pigmentation. I haven't felt the need to build for more intensity with any of these shades--the color intensity is excellent with no effort at all. I find the creme shades to be a bit more moisturizing on my lips than the shimmers/frosts. The one issue I have with the formula of the shimmer/frosts is that some of them (in particular the lighter shades) can become a little cakey over time. I've encountered a few instances where the lighter, shimmery shades caked up a little in the center region of my lips after an hour or so of wear. One way to curb this is to apply a little less product during initial application.

Flavor/fragrance: Both the flavor and fragrance of these lip colors is very mild. They sort of remind me of MAC lipsticks because they have a very soft vanilla fragrance and flavor to them, but both the flavor and fragrance seem to completely disappear a few minutes after application for me.

Staying power: The darker shades yield the best staying power for me. In particular, the red cremes have very impressive staying power on my lips--four hours or longer. And when the darker shades fade, they leave a very nice, even stain behind. The lighter, shimmery shades last about 2-3 hours for me, which I think is good considering that lighter shades never seem to last long on my lips to begin with.

Finish: I very much prefer the cremes in this line to the shimmer/frosts. That's a personal choice, of course, and I always favor cremes when it comes to lip color. But I do want to warn you that the shimmery shades (in particular the lighter shades) can look very frosty on the lips, depending upon the color. If you don't like a frosty look, I'd stick with the medium-to-dark shimmery shades. As far as the lighter creme shades (like Bare-ly Legal and Within These Adobe Walls), I would suggest using the thinnest layer possible because these shades can look a little chalky (even though they're not dry in the slightest) if you overdo it and apply too much.

Packaging: I've never been a big fan of lip colors that don't fully retract into the case, because I'm generally a klutz and I tend to hit the stick with the lid when I'm opening and closing the tube. However, I will say that because these stickers are a bit more narrow than the average lipstick, I've managed to keep these lip colors nice and tidy (it's a miracle!). Another thing I don't love about the packaging of these lip colors is the labels and safety seals. Do not get me wrong: I LOVE safety seals on drugstore beauty products (in fact I despise when brands don't put safety seals on their products) but I found the labels and stickers on these tubes to be almost too much. I understand that Wet n Wild needs to affix the product info on the tubes, which is great, but combined with the safety seals, it's a struggle to peel off all of the layers and then the tube is left with sticker residue that never quite seems to go away. I'm sure I could use Goo Gone to remove it but..I'm lazy.

FINAL VERDICT: Are the new Wet n Wild Megashield Lip Colors perfect? No. Are they worth $2.99? YES. I would actually pay double that amount for some of the shades in this range. I think they're moisturizing, creamy, pigmented and have great staying power, which are all things I look for in a lip color. On the downside, some of the shades in the range are very frosty, the sticks don't fully retract into the cases and the labels/safety seals leave sticker residue behind, but those three things don't deter me personally because the shades that work for me REALLY work for me. I think that if you can find a few shades that work well for you in this collection, you'll be quite happy with your purchases. Personally, I'm willing to work around a few packaging flaws in exchange for a lip color that's dependable and works well for me...and only costs $2.99.

  1. do you think it's a girl would look okay on light-medium warm skin tones?

    1. I think it would, because even though it's blue-based, it's not SUPER blue, if that makes sense! Give it a whirl, but keep your receipt for an exchange or return if it doesn't work for you. Let me know how you like it! :)

  2. I did like these formula-wise but I wish so many of them weren't frosty. I picked up pink champagne and peachy keen and didn't realize they had a frost finish until I applied them. With my dry lips frostiness is a super huge no-no. I do want to go back and pick up some of the creme finishes though.

  4. I'm confused about these... are they tinted balms comparable to Revlon butters or L'Oreal balms? Or are they a moisturizing lipstick?

I too love your reviews G., you give us a ton of info, and such great photos. I actually read through all of the others you linked and still preferred yours. So many people just say they hate it or love it, without giving the details of why... so we can decide if it will work for us. You tend to be very neutral, giving both the pros and cons, and are so generous in providing other opinions without the "insecurity" some other bloggers seem to have. You take the time to respond to many of our comments and questions. I guess I just wanted to say Thank You. You are the only blogger I subscribe to.

    1. To me, they're more like really moisturizing lipsticks. :)

And WOW! I don't even know what to say except for THANK YOU, from the very bottom of my heart. You truly have no idea how much that means to me. xoxo

  7. PBI, to Unknown ... while I don't know how they're marketed, my personal finding is that these are a moisturizing lipstick as opposed to a balm like the Revlon butters.

(I should put it out there that I actually hate the Revlon butters ... just not my thing. They dry my lips out terribly, are too sheer & glossy for my taste, and don't last at all. Just MY experience ;-)

I tried these with trepidation after having the "bleh" experience with Revlon ... and came to find that I LOVE these because of the fact that they truly moisturize and provide opaque color. They're not a treatment, but my lips feel great when wearing these.

I have Birthday Suit & Pink Champagne, and never even SAW Within These Adobe Walls, which I MUST have :-)

Thank you, G, for continually putting out such great & thorough reviews :-)

    1. Hey sweets! How ya been? :)

I totally agree with your description of these. We are makeup twinsies in so many ways it's not even funny! (I think the only exception would be the lip butters because you know how much I love those. Lol)

Btw, it's looking like our beloved powder foundation is going bye bye. Waaah! Have you found a ds replacement yet?

Thanks so much for your sweet words. Your comments always put a smile on my face. xo

    2. Thanks so much, exactly what I was wondering. I hated the Revlon butters too, for exactly the same reasons. I think I will give one of these a try next time I go shopping.

I have been trying, in vain, to find your "HG powder foundation" myself because I really wanted to try it, we seem to have very similar skin (very oily combination). I had a feeling it had been discontinued because I cannot find it anywhere. I did find a compact foundation I really love, but it is not a powder... Revlon new complexion all in one compact foundation. It goes on creamy (I apply with a flat top brush), and at first you will think "no way this is going to work" but leave it alone for a few minutes.... it sets to a really nice powder finish. It has great coverage, I even use it as concealer with a smaller brush..... it really is like foundation, concealer, and powder all in one. In fact I find it best if I do not put powder on top of it, except for maybe a tiny bit on my T-zone, and only after it sets... or else it can go really cakey if you powder it wet. But it stays smooth and matte all day for me (with primer), and feels lovely on like you have nothing on your face.

  8. I just picked one of these up this week at CVS. I picked up the "it's a girl" one and it looks nice on my medium tone skin. These are 30% off this week and there was a $1 off coupon attached. So i got it for $1.09 plus local tax here in PA.

G- Just wanted to say that I've been a long time "lurker" of your webiste and I absolutely love your blog. I thought this would be a good first time comment. Hope you are feeling better G.

  9. Hi G,
Hope you're much better today! I love the way you write your blogs. Info, pics and more pics, and your writing style is entertaining (at least to me) and very smooth (in a very good way)!
Do you think any of the lighter creme shades like Barely Legal and Within these Adobe Walls would work for me (I have very, very light skin, almost porcelain)?
    Thanks and take care!

    1. Thanks, honey! I'm feeling a little bit better every day. :)

And wow, thanks so much for all the sweet things you said!! You totally made my day! Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one I'm entertaining with my long reviews, so it means the world to me that you'd take the time to share that with me. :)

As for your question, I'm not really sure. A part of me thinks that they're just a little too light and they might wash you out but then another part of me thinks that if you applied them very lightly, they might enhance the natural pigment of your lips. I'd buy them at CVS, Rite Aid or Walgreens and keep your receipt. That way, if they don't work, you can exchange or return them. Hope that helps!

  11. Thanks for this great post! I keep seeing them at the store and debating whether or not I want them - I have noticed that WnW LOVES frost finished on most of their lip products. While nice, it's great to add some creme finished for cheap to my collection. Great swatches, honest review! LOVE IT!

  12. OMG, G ... are you kidding me?! Our beloved PF foundation is being ... *gulp* discontinued?! Y U HURT ME SO?!

I haven't found a replacement, because I didn't know of this until NOW! AAAAAAACK!

(I didn't know where else to reply that you'd see this LOL ... apologies!)

  13. I hate to be the dissenter here, but I didn't like these. I bought Bare- ly Legal and A Currant Affair, and actually tried the former. It had a gritty texture that I couldn't tolerate. Maybe mine was a dud, but I returned them both.

  14. A mini-review on Salsa Lessons: Picked this up yesterday for a buck with Q's. There were only five shades to choose from and three of them were pink, so I grabbed this and the peach. The swatches do not do this justice. It is not just bright, it is fluorescent. I knew it would be bright... so I wore it with a warm toned very neutral eye and face... but it positively glows. It does feel lovely on the lips, very smooth, and goes on completely opaque with very little effort. It was literally coming off on everything though, I even had it on my hand just from brushing against my lips the slightest bit while putting on my eyeliner. I finally gave up on it and wiped most of it off with a Kleenex, and voila... it looks great lol. Still bright, but perfectly wearable. The best thing is it is really comfortable, usually when you wipe most of a lippie off you get that dried out feeling, but this still has some moisture to it, feels like I put on some chapstick, and so far very little transfer. So I just wanted to warn you.. and give you an idea of making it wearable because I was about to toss it before I figured this out.

  15. I picked up It's A Girl and Lolly Popstar and was really, really not happ with them. Lolly Popstar was SO bright and shimmery, like a super, ultra frosty fuschia. It's A Girl is a lot brighter and blue based than what it looks like, It was really not my cup of tea.

Thanks for the review G I'M glad that you give such detail in your reviews as well!:)

  16. I have paid a ton of money for lipstick and I always end up with a collection of them...I paid $2.99 for Bare-ly legal and have used EVERY bit of it. Well worth the forgettable few dollars.

  17. Because my local stores don't carry WetNWild I had to order these online. It was tricky picking out colors because the website didn't show a closeup, so I only got 3: Birthday Suit, Within These Adobe Walls, and Lolly Popstar. Now that I've found your blog, I think I'll be really happy with the colors I got. I only wished I bought more. LOL

This is the best and more in-depth review I've found for these lipsticks. I will def check out your other reviews!
