Review: New Dove Invigorating Dry Shampoo

I know I've said it many times on this blog, but I have a slight addiction to dry shampoos. Having oily skin and side-swept bangs, the hair that rests on my forehead tends to get oily much quicker than the rest of my hair, so to extend the time between shampoos, dry shampoo can be my best friend. I've reviewed several dry shampoos over the years, and even though there are a few drugstore versions that I love, I'm always thrilled try new releases. So today I'd like to show you the Dove Invigorating Dry Shampoo, which I was sent for review. This product is part of the new Dove Style+Care range that I posted about a while back (click here if you'd like more info).

Dove Invigorating Dry Shampoo
(retail: $3.76, 5 oz)

From Dove:

Formulated for all hair types and colors, New Dove© Refresh+Care™ Invigorating Dry Shampoo, the first dry shampoo from Dove© Hair Care, refreshes and invigorates hair between washes. The weightless formula leaves hair looking and feeling fresh, soft and voluminous. Fragrance notes from the Dove© Damage Therapy line of shampoo and conditioners are infused in the formula for a freshly-washed scent.

Spray bottle allows ease of application directly onto roots--spray 8-10 inches from hair, rub in using palm, brush out and style as usual. Dove© Refresh+Care™ Invigorating Dry Shampoo will be available on shelf beside the full line of Dove© Style+Care™ products that nourish and protect hair for long-lasting style.

Weightless formula cleans to transform hair from lifeless to bouncy
  • Absorbs oil between traditional washes so hair looks and feels refreshed
  • Helps hair stay fresh and voluminous between regular washes
  • Freshly-washed scent
  • Same fragrance notes as Dove© Damage Therapy™ line of shampoo and conditioners
  • 5 fl oz
  • SRP: $3.76

As mentioned above, the fragrance of this product is the same as the Dove Damage Therapy line of shampoos and conditioners. It's a fresh, clean scent that I think would appeal to many people. It smells refreshing with a slight sweet note which I like very much.

This product comes with a standard aerosol spray nozzle:

As with every dry shampoo I review, I think pictures speak louder than words. So here are photos taken before, during and after using this product on my hair two days after my last wash. I tried to pull back the top layer of my bangs to show you the part of my hair that rests upon my forehead. This is the part of my hair that I tend to target the most with dry shampoo because it gets oily very quickly:

The following photo was taken just seconds after apply Dove Invigorating Dry Shampoo as directed. This is BEFORE I worked the product in with my palm. I've noticed that this product tends to leave a slight white cast on my hair before I work it in:

The following picture was taken after I worked the product in with my palm (as directly) and then combed my bangs into place:

And finally, here's what my bangs looked like after I applied (and worked in) this dry shampoo to the rest of my hair (any whiteness you see in this photo is actually my gray hairs showing through--I'm overdue for a coloring!):

I love the fragrance of this product. It's clean and fresh and I think it would appeal to many of you. I also LOVE the volume this product gives my hair. By far, this dry shampoo is more volumizing than any other drugstore dry shampoo I own. In fact, I've found myself using it even when my hair is not oily. Sometimes when my hair feels flat and lifeless, I like to spray this product through from root to tip and WOW, it really makes a difference. My hair feels like it almost doubles in volume and it really gives it some nice added body. Another thing I love is that, after I work this product through my hair, it really seems to absorb the oils in my hair and leaves it feeling clean. Sometimes, depending on just how oily my hair is, I have to use a second application with other dry shampoos I own before I'm happy with the level of oil absorption. But with Dove, I find that one application does the trick, even when my hair is extremely oily.

There is a white cast that is visible if I accidentally hold the bottle too close to my hair during application. Granted, this white case dissipates after I work the product through my hair, so I wouldn't let it deter me from using this product. I basically just want to warn those of you with dark/black hair that it's something to watch out for.  Also, I find that this product doesn't seem to leave my hair as shiny as other dry shampoos I own. In the photo above, I think you can kind of see that my hair looks a little bit dull. Granted, it's not as dull as BEFORE I used this product, but it's not super shiny either.

Value-wise, I think this product ranks right up there with the best of them. You get 5 oz for $3.76 (manufacturer's suggested retail price). This is a steal compared to some other dry shampoos at the drugstore. I've owned some dry shampoos that were 3.5 oz to 4.3 oz and the retail price on those was around $5.99, so I think the Dove shampoo is priced very reasonably (for comparison, the Suave Keratin Dry Shampoo is 5 oz and retails for around $3).

FINAL VERDICT: The new Dove Invigorating Dry Shampoo would be a great choice if you're looking for a product that can quickly add some nice volume to your hair and also absorb unwanted oil. This product really excels at adding body and volume to my hair, to the point where I find myself reaching for it even when my hair's not oily. If your hair is looking flat and lifeless, a few sprays from root to tip should bring some life back to your hair in no time. Just be careful not to hold the bottle too close to your hair during application or else you might encounter a white cast that you'll have to work out with a brush or comb. Also, this product doesn't add any shine to my hair, although it does do a very nice job at absorbing all of the oils in my root area.

Have you tried any products from the new Dove Style+Care line? Thoughts?

  1. I saw this at Target about 3 or 4 weeks ago and picked up a can. I'm not sure if I got a bad can though b/c I used it once and then a week later, I grabbed it to try again and the can was completely empty. It's not like I used a ton of it the first time either. I may buy another can to give it another shot though. I can't really judge if I liked it or not based on just the one use. So far, I still think Suave's Dry Shampoo is my go to dry shampoo.

    1. I've actually heard this from other readers about the Suave version. It seems to be a defect that occurs in the bottles (maybe a pin hole leak that causes the contents to escape?) and it happens with other brands too. My best suggestion is to take it back to the store and ask for an exchange. It should NOT run out after only a few uses. I can usually get 20+ uses from one can and I have long hair!

    2. I've bought the Suave version about 3 times so far and haven't had a problem. It just happened to me with the Dove version, but hopefully it was just a bad can. And I tried the Tresemme one as well and like you I didn't care for it. I don't think it works very well at all and the smell is horrible. The Dove had a very nice smell the one time I was able to try it and I love the grapefruity smell of the Suave.

  2. Hi G!

I was just wondering, I have really thick black hair that tends to get oily easily. I was looking at this post about dry shampoos and it really intrigued me! I was wondering if you can give me some suggestions on which brand to buy! I do want to try the dove on that you just reviewed about but is there another one that you like the best?

    Thank you!

    1. You can click on the category ”dry shampoos” in the right hand sidebar and all of my dry shampoo reviews will come up (i've reviewed quite a few over the years). It really depends on personal preference...take a look! :)

  3. I have dark red/auburn hair and the first thing I noticed when I used this for the first time (this morning!) was the white "powder" but once I worked it in there was no difference in color. This is the first dry shampoo I've used and I love it, I think I need to use a little more product the next time I try it.

    Thanks for the review!

  4. I reviewed the TRESemme version a few years ago and didn't care for it either. :(

  5. I've been using this product for a few weeks now. I picked it up when Wags had a 2/$6 sale and I needed some hairspray. I'd never used a dry shampoo before, but they seem to be all the rage these days so I thought I would try it. I love it! I don't see a need to try any other brand. Love the way it works and the price. I did, however, have an issue with my can. After one use, I couldnt get anything but accelerant to come out. I thought it must be a problem with the nozzle, so I gave it to my husband to work on. He fixed it for me and there's plenty of product left!

  6. I use Dove shampoo and love it, so I obviously need to try this! I have used the Suave fruity smelling one and wasn't a big fan and I have the Psst now but it leaves a white-ish tinge on my dark hair. Thanks for the great review!

  7. I'm learning that my idea of oily hair is not the same as everyone else's... because for me there is no such thing as "two days after the last wash." How I wish! If I wash my hair at night, it's oily the next morning. Shower in the morning, oily by lunch. I've tried several dry shampoos and I'm sorry to say that I don't think any of them are up to the task of truly oily hair - and especially not dark oily hair. I'm still holding out hope, though!

  8. Do you find these products are drying to hair? Mine is naturally curly so drying it out is the last thing I want to do.. but would love to stretch out my shampoos a bit longer.

  9. @Sarah, we had the same problem. My daughter used it one time only on her bangs. The next time she went to use it, the can was empty! I thought, okay a defective can. We had another can and the exact same thing happened!! We also had the same problem with the Suave. Yes, she did shake the can well before and during use. So not sure what is going on with this product.

  12. I just got mine at Rite Aid (San Diego), retail $4.99 which is over-priced than the one you listed on this post, but after 20% off $3.99, and I used $1.00 coupon so that brought me to $2.99! Anyways, this product seems pretty promising, can't wait to try it!!! ^_^

  13. I utilize dry shampoo as a styling product ALL THE TIME, G! Tons of people do. Like many others, I was not impressed with Tresseme's dry shampoo, and so resorted to Suave. The grapefruit scent is a bit much for me, but my boyfriend (he who hateth all things fragrant, like most perfumes, air refresheners and candles) loves the scent so I use it to encourage him. Silly, I know.

And, for the question above, no, I don't find the dry shampoo formulas 'drying'. Most leave your hair looking a little dull, and you don't have that clean, refreshing feeling like you do from a hot shower, but still. Dry shampoo is amazing.

  14. This is the first dry shampoo I have found that worked to my satisfaction. I now don't mind day two hair! I also had difficulty with my first can, but returned it to the store for a new can and am loving it. I agree that it adds body too!

  15. I just bought this product a few days ago, excited to try it after this review. I used it twice and picked it up today to use again and it was empty! Very disapointed since I really liked it. Unfortunately I threw out my receipt so I can't return :( Seeing that this seems to be a problem for other people too I won't be purchasing another, which is a shame because I really liked it!

  16. I also had a problem with the can being empty the third day I owned it! I really loved the product, I just don't know what happened to my can! It happened with my Suave dry shampoo also.

  17. Great article. But is this product compatible with keratin treated hair?

  18. Glad I'm not the only one with the near empty can problem. The product was gone after one use! I couldn't believe it, so I'll just never buy it again. Since then, I've discovered Batiste's dry shampoo. It's definitely achieved holy grail status for me/

  19. For those of you with the empty can syndrome - after spraying, run sprayer under warm water for a few seconds. Sometimes, small particles dry inside the little sprayer cap and it leaks the product. Hope this helps.
