Review: New Wet n Wild Megalast Nail Color (PART ONE)

Today I'd like to show you the first four polishes in my multi-part series that will cover all of the new Wet n Wild Megalast Nail Colors. I'm trying to give my poor cuticles a break (I've been swatching lots of polishes lately) so I'm going to cover these four at a time. Let's get started!

Wet n Wild Megalast Nail Color
(retail: $1.99 each, 0.45 oz)

As many of you know, the newly-reformulated Megalast polish line contains some shades that were in the original line, as well as some NEW shades.

2% Milk

This is a sheer, milky shade (thus, the name). I loved it in the old formula and I love it in the new formula. It seems a little easier to work with this time around, but it still requires three coats until I'm happy with the look. Three coats still yields VSN (visible nail line) so if that bothers you, be prepared for 4+ coats (or start with an opaque white cream base).

Break the Ice

Break the Ice was love at first sight when I swatched it back in 2010 and it's still my favorite milky-white-sparkly polish of all time. This one requires two coats for me, but three would make it even more opaque of course.  The formula's a little thick, but nothing the average nail fanatic wouldn't be able to handle.

Private Viewing

Private Viewing is also a shade that was in the original line-up but I don't remember owning/wearing it back then so I can't tell you how the new formula compares to the old. This would be a good "mannequin hands" shade if it matched your skintone (it's a little too dark and warm to match mine). There's a very subtle shimmer that you can see in the pic taken with flash below. I needed two coats for what you see in my pics. The formula is nice--not too thick or thin.

Wet Cement

Wet Cement is a new shade and it's a pretty standard greige creme. Like most of the greige cremes in my collection, this one applied effortlessly. Two coats for perfect opacity.

I thought it would be helpful to show you how the old style Megalasts compare to the new. So here's a pic of an old Megalast (this is an LE shade so the cap is white--the core collection polishes had a black cap):

As you can see, the bottle has changed dramatically. It's bigger and holds more polish (0.45 oz vs 0.30 oz). It's great that the price has stayed the same ($1.99) despite the fact that we're getting more polish.

Another improvement is the longer brush handle. It's easier to work with now.

And depending on your taste, the brush is different (I'll leave it up to you if that's good or bad). It's much wider now and has a more rounded tip.

Speaking of the brush, the one complaint I've heard from readers so far is that some of you have purchased polishes that contained a brush with a ragged trim. I've used eight of these new Megalasts so far and I have honestly not experienced that issue, so maybe it was specific to a certain batch. I find the brushes flexible (not too stiff) and the curved tip works nicely for a one-swipe manicure, however they can be too wide if you have narrow nail beds. For instance, they're wider than Sally Hansen Insta-Dri brushes and also Rimmel Lasting Finish Pro brushes. So just keep that in mind if you have narrow nail beds.

As for the FORMULA, I love all of the shades I've tried so far. I think they're consistently easy to work with, the dry-time is good and, on my nails, THEY LAST. I'm talking 4-5 days without chipping (sandwiched between base and top coat, of course).

Please stay tuned for the next part in this series, coming soon.

In the meantime, have you purchased any of the new Wet n Wild Megalasts yet? I'd love to hear from you!

  1. The new bottles look really nice!

  2. Looks like the same brushes they used in the Spoiled line, which I'm not entirely a fan of, myself. I must have narrower nail beds than I thought because I find them kind of awkward for the most part. Guess it's good that these haven't really held my attention too much yet then, huh? lol

  3. Thanks to your site, I purchased 3 colors for $3.98. I really like the formula on "I need a Refresh-mint" and it's a near dupe of China Glaze For Audrey, which is an awesome color. I also got "Break the Ice" but I'm going to exchange it because it's a little too sheer compared to the shimmery white I already have, Orly "Au Champagne."

  4. I'm an absolute FIEND for Disturbia. I actually like the thicker brush when working with cremes, for some reason.

  5. I'm looking forward to trying these, but if the brushes are anything like the Wet n Wild Spoiled line, I may have to pass. I'm usually a fan of wider brushes (think OPI), but those are HUGE, and make it nearly impossible to do a clean pedicure. Anyone know if these are the same brushes?

  6. This is seriously megalast. I painted mine last week and it lasted for a week (with minimal chipping) and without top coat or base coat. I painted my nails 2 days ago in a different shade and it still looks fab. :) Love the new brush too!

  7. I love these polishes!! I hope they come out with more colors!

  8. I purchased three shades (at Walgreens...buy 2, get 1 free!) I have Private Viewing, Bite the Bullet, and I Need A Refresh-mint, which is my fav out of the three. 2 out of 3 of the brushes had a ragged trim, but it's manageable.

  9. Now that you remind me of how the old megalast look, I would love to try this out. For me, I don't wear nail polish that often since it is kinda requirement of the job that I do. But I can never resist something new especially from WnW!, I'll check this out because more products, bigger brush, and better formula are something I always look for in nail polish. Love!!

  10. I picked up three of these when it was B2G1 at Walgreens. I was not a fan of the formula on all three. It's a very strange formula that did weird almost "pitting" things on my nail. Adding topcoat helped with that. As far as the brush goes. I love a wide, curved tip brush, but this one was too wide. It is almost wider than my pinky nail. I DO like the curved brush tip though.

  11. Once my no buy ends, I have to pick up a few of these colors! I don't think that it should be a problem given the price. I love the new bottle design as I'm not a fan of the old Megalast bottles. I'm looking forward to the rest of your swatches!

  12. Thanks to your info I was able to purchase 3 of these for only $1.22! I bought a bottle of the Moisture Mist by Shea Moisture (love that stuff) last week from Walgreens and got $3 in Register Rewards, then used that with the B2G1 free promo on the new Megalasts. I got 3 bottles for less than the price of one!

I got several Megalasts in the original bottles during a 99 cents sale a while back, so this time I got I Need a Refresh-mint, On a Trip, and Through the Grapevine (already had that one, but it's pretty so I got another one). Haven't tried them yet but I'm looking forward to it! I actually like wide brushes like the ones these have.

  13. I bought 4 of these nail polishes as soon as I saw them at my local RITE AID, I really like them, the colors are just beautiful!

  14. I love these polishes. I have On a Trip, Wet Cement and I can't remember the other and they do really last, although I use a base coat, bonder and top coat. Thanks for your review!

  15. The new bottle looks so much better. And marcile (who commented above) is right - these brushes do look a lot similar to the Spoiled line brushes. I used Spoiled's "The Parking Meteor Expired" last night for a pedicure and the brush was a little difficult to work with. It held on to a lot of polish, which was nice, but it didn't feel like I had a ton of control where the polish went even wiping off the excess. Maybe I got a bad batch, though.
Hopefully these new Megalasts are a little easier to work with! Private Viewing is calling out to me.

  16. I have about 6 or 7 of the old Megalasts--including Break the Ice and 2% Milk. I, too LOVE Break the Ice--both alone and as a layering polish--and am so happy that I can go get a bigger bottle of it now! Kudos to Wet N Wild for giving us more polish without charging more money!

  17. I LOVE I need a re-freshment!!! Wet Cement is also really nice. The pigmentation and application is really good. At first I didn't like the thicker brushes companies are using but now I find that they are growing on me.

  18. I did a wnw comparison of private viewing if you are interested :)

  19. Break the Ice is really, really pretty!! I haven't picked up any of these. I have a handful of the old ones. I definitely want to pick up Break the Ice though.

  20. Out of these "Wet Cement" is really calling my name.
Also I didn't realize that the Spoiled line had the same type of wide brush.

  21. I'm interested; do you know if the MILK shade is the one that used to be like a duochrome, with a bluish cast? If not, do you happen to know where (what cosmetic line) I can find that shade in? I've loved it all my life, but seem to have lost touch with it (the shade, not my life, that is LOL). Thanks

  22. Omgosh you sold me on these. I was always hesitant on picking these up because the other wnw polishes chip in 1-2 days but I think I will take the leap and try these out!

  23. I picked up two colors this evening, Milk and Private Viewing really stood out for me. Can harly wait to try them.

  25. I'm so excited about these! I was mad they stopped selling the old version, and then when I saw they were releasing an upgraded collection and reformulation, I got so excited!!! I can't wait to buy some of these, I have the old 2% Milk polish, but if this new formulation is even better, I might just buy the newer one to replace my almost gone old version.

  26. I wonder how much longer the buy 2 get 1 free will last. I'm tempted to give in now.

    1. I'm not at my computer right now so I can't search for my original post about that sale, but I THINK it runs through Feb 25. :)

  27. I don't like the new brushes. I just bought 5 bottles of the new Megalast polishes (all different colors). All the brushes are large and fluffy, but 3 out of 5 have brushes that are misshapen, which is a shame because the polishes are fantastic, especially for the price.

  28. I LOVE these polishes! I didn't realize until I read your post that these are a re-formulation. I never tried the old formula. But let me tell you, I bought two of them and was so impressed by the staying power that I went back to Walgreens yesterday and bought four more. I used Orly Bonder and top-coat and these stay on so well - no chips or anything! Also, I'm a big fan of the brush I really think it helps get a good line by the cuticle.

  29. I had the old 'Private Viewing', wore it and HATED it! It looks so much better on you. Maybe I will give it another chance. I will keep an eye out for these new and improved ones!

  30. I love "Private Viewing" you swatched here, so so gorgeous ♥ ♥ ♥

  31. I love these polishes I just bought the color Wet Cement as well and you are right the application is smooth. I normally use essie polishes and stoped using wet and wild a while back as their polishes in my opinion were a bit watery. Im glad I tried them again though the quality is way better then i remember it being! Great reveiw!

  32. I bought 2% Milk and Break the Ice and I LOVE them both! I really like how Private Viewing looks and I'm totally going to pick that color up next time I'm at CVS or Walgreens!

  36. Do they still make Private Viewing? I'm looking for a shimmery pink, with a hint of warmth, that is not super pale nor super dark. That shade looks close to what I want, but I haven't spotted it in stores, and I've looked for a while.

  37. OMG private viewing is the exact type of shade i've been dying for (warm toned creme nude). i need this! hope i can still find it...

  39. I have this polish in Sugar Coat- it's a nice milky cream that stays on longer than my OPI polish- impressive! I love the brush too; it allows for even coverage. This is definately my new standard polish; I will be buying lots more. Well worth it! :)

  40. I have 3, including Private Viewing, and I just love them! Coverage is good and the brush makes application a cinch! I hope they come out with new colors soon. I would love to see more brights. I'm definitely adding more to my collection.

  41. Picked up a bottle of Private Viewing earlier and I just finished putting 2 thick-ish coats on. Fairly opaque and easy to work with. I'll probably do a third thin layer next time for a more solid finish, but overall I'm cool with it. It's not like you should expect an OPI experience with 2 bucks. I wash the dishes regularly in my apartment, so we'll see how long this will last without chipping. :)
