Review: New L'Oreal EverCrème Sulfate-Free Cleansing Conditioner

"Condition Washing" is not new. Some of you may know it by its more common name, the "No Poo Method" (of course the word "poo" is short for SHAMpoo). I've been intrigued by this concept for years (click here for Afrobella's blog post on the origins and benefits of the no-poo method written back in 2006).

In a nutshell, the No Poo Method is simple: instead of using a traditional shampoo to cleanse your hair, you use a low-sudsing, less drying product instead. For years, people have been using products such as a light conditioner in place of shampoo (Vo5 conditioners are well-known for this purpose). This can be beneficial to those with extremely dry and/or curly hair who want to avoid the drying effects of traditional shampoos. So just think of the No Poo Method as a "kinder, gentler" way of cleansing the hair.

In the years since the No Poo Method hit the scene, there have been lots of specialty brands that have released products specifically for this purpose. But, to my knowledge, L'Oreal was the first to bring this type of product to the mainstream (aka: drugstore) when they recently released the EverCrème Cleasning Conditioner. Naturally, I HAD to try it the moment I saw it at my local CVS, so I bought a bottle and have been using it for a few weeks now.

 L'Oreal EverCrème Cleansing Conditioner
(retail: $6.99, 8.3 oz)

Pay special attention to the directions (above), as I'll refer to those later in this review.

Before I get into how this product worked for me, I have to share with you my biggest complaint about the design of this bottle:

Don't get me wrong: I LOVE when shampoos or conditioners come with pump dispensers. HOWEVER, this one is the type that should go on a FACIAL cleanser, not a hair cleanser. Case-in-point:

The above photo was taken after one pump of this product. It's hard to show perspective in photos, but hopefully this will help:

In the above photo, I have shown you how much  "regular" shampoo I need to cleanse my hair (see top of photo). It's basically enough to fill the palm of my hand (I have long hair that goes to the middle of my back).  Underneath that "puddle" of regular shampoo, I applied ONE pump of the L'Oreal product. I'm sorry, but no matter how concentrated this product is (more on that in a moment), one pump of this product isn't even enough to cleanse my BANGS. So my complaint is that I literally have to use about 20 pumps to coat my hair, and since each pump yields such a TINY amount of product, I get frustrated standing in my shower pumping tiny bit after tiny bit in my hand until I have enough to work with. I'm sorry L'Oreal, but that's a design FAIL in my book. This product should really be in a squeeze bottle.

Now, please allow me to back-track and walk you through my thoughts on this product from beginning to end. If this review is too long for you, please feel free to skip and go directly to my "Final Verdict." But if you're interested in the details, by all means, keep reading!

First of all, the fragrance is delightful. If you like coconut, you'll probably love the scent of this product.

Now, I know that the No Poo Method is best for those with dry hair (even the label on this product states: FOR ALL DRY HAIR TYPES). So I realize that I'm not the prime candidate for a product like this since I have oily hair, but I do have dry ends. (For new readers, my hair is fine in texture but I have a lot of it. My hair goes down to the middle of my back and it's naturally wavy and also color-treated. My hair has a tendency to get frizzy if I don't use the right products.)

Traditionally, those who opt for the No Poo Method tend to have thick, coarse, curly, dry hair that has a tendency to feel very dry after using traditional shampoos. So why did I want to try this product? Well since I have oily hair, I tend to want to wash my hair every single day. I was hoping that a product like this could "get me by" on the days when I want to wash my hair but don't need a deep cleansing. My goal was to us this about every two days, to see if it could improve the texture of my ends, which are currently very dry.

So here's my experience:

The label does not indicate how much you should use for a single application. Some labels will say something like "Apply a small amount to hair." But since the pump dispenses such a SMALL amount of product (see above), I took that to mean that I shouldn't use the same amount that I'm accustomed to using with my regular shampoos. Well, that would fine, if I could actually distribute a small amount into my hair. But, that's kind of impossible. This product feels like you're trying to work a body lotion into your hair. It's creamy, but since there are no suds, it's incredibly challenging to work it through the hair, and forget about trying to get it down to your scalp. Even after several attempts, I STILL never feel like this product isn't even touching my scalp (though I'm sure it is...I just can't feel it).

After about ten pumps of product into my palm, I find that that's enough to coat the top portion of my hair. But then I need an additional ten pumps or so to coat the bottom portion of my hair. Again, it's a real challenge to work this through and penetrate the bottom layer of my hair, but don't go running away just yet because THERE'S HOPE.

Per the directions, I have been leaving this product on my hair for at LEAST two minutes before I rinse (usually five minutes). The great thing is that once I start to rinse, it's as if the water "releases" the product and it makes it SO much easier to get down into the bottom layer of my hair and really work it through before the final rinse. So for those who try this, don't be scared that you're never going to coat ALL of your hair with this product--you will get there, but probably during the rinse stage.

As for the rinse, I find that this product rinses pretty easily (about the same as rinsing a standard conditioner from your hair). And what I LOVE is that it really feels as if I have used a traditional shampoo and a standard conditioner, even though I've only used this one product. My hair feels soft, yet clean, and nicely moisturized. But please note, I used the word "standard" conditioner because my doesn't feel the way it feels after a use a deep conditioner. I don't get a lot of detangling or deep hydration from this product; it's comparable to what my hair feels like after I use a regular shampoo and a standard conditioner.

PLEASE NOTE: per the label, there is "no need to use a separate conditioner" after you've used this product. If you have fine hair like me, I would absolutely agree with this statement--this product is enough on its own. HOWEVER, if your hair is thick, coarse and/or extremely dry, you MIGHT benefit from using an additional light conditioner after rinsing this product from your hair. That's totally up to you.

After my hair dries, it feels extremely soft, light and bouncy. In fact, I was afraid that it felt a little TOO light (which, if you have oily hair, you know means that greasy hair is about to rear its ugly head). Surprisingly, I find that my usual break-through oil that appears at my roots doesn't come about until about the next day (which is about standard for me). So this product does not contribute to my oily hair, which is wonderful. I also find that my curls have some extra "spring" to them, and this product really does wonders to control (practically eliminate) my frizz.

FINAL VERDICT: If you have thick, coarse, curly and/or very dry hair, I think you might be quite happy with using L'Oreal EverCrème Cleansing Conditioner in place of your traditional shampoo and conditioner on days when you want a light cleansing. However, be prepared for a bit of a challenge when it comes to how this product dispenses from the bottle, and how much you'll need in order to coat your hair. My advice would be to simply remove the pump dispenser altogether so you're not standing there pumping twenty or forty times before you get enough product into your hand. Other than that, I think this product absolutely serves its purpose. It provides a nice, less harsh alternative to traditional shampoos and leaves my hair very smooth, soft and light. Would I use it every day? No way. But I never intended to use it every day (my hair's just too oily for that and like I mentioned before, I don't feel that this product cleanses my scalp as much as I sometimes require). But I would use it once or twice a week in place of my normal shampoos and conditioners because I think it gives my hair (specifically my dry ends) a much needed break and I'm very happy with how my hair looks and feels after it dries.

Have you tried the No Poo Method? If so, what products do YOU use? Have you tried L'Oreal EverCrème Cleansing Conditioner yet? Do you think it might be a good fit for your haircare needs?

  1. If you have dry ends, it might help to only shampoo at your roots and let the suds naturally make their way down your hair as you rinse. I've been doing that lately and I've noticed a lot less frizz. Also, try applying your conditioner from your ears down and not all the way to your roots. PS. Love your blog! I read it constantly!

    1. Funny that you mention those two tips, because that's EXACTLY how I apply both my shampoo AND conditioners! :) I never, ever work my shampoo into my ends--I just let it naturally work its way down there. And I don't think I've applied conditioner to my roots in about 25 years. LOL! Well, actually, I do apply conditioner to my roots after a color treatment, but that's the only time I do. I'd be a walking grease-ball by noon if I used conditioner on my roots every day. lol! Thanks for sharing. :)

    2. You might want to try the CWC method for your hair G. (I have waist length hair, and that is what I use to prevent the ends from getting really dry.) I take a cheapie condish like Vo5, put it on the ends of my hair from my shoulders down, then shampoo my scalp, then rinse. Then I put a heavier conditioner on my hair as normal after shampooing. The first conditioner helps protect the ends from the harsh effects of shampoo.

  2. Great review! I am a big fan of their other "Ever" products and used them religiously before I color treated my hair. I might have to give this a go!

  3. I'm on day 5 of this product, as I, too, was curious as to how it would work. I have hair like you - thin wavy, oily at the roots and dry at the ends. I'm not getting the "clean" feeling on my hair. It feels greasy and dries very strange. I have heard that it takes about a week of funny looking/feeling hair before the nice, shiny hair is evident.

Was it immediate nice hair for you? I'm going to keep on going with this for a bit until either it looks nice, or I can't take the nastiness anymore! Good thing I'm on maternity leave!

    1. I think that the feeling your getting is quite common. That's the thing with this type of product--it really depends on what you were using up to the point of switching over, and what condition your hair is in when you start. My hair felt soft and clean immediately after the very first use.

I would try keeping with it for another week, and hopefully your hair will adjust and will start to feel "clean" again. If not, did you buy this at the drugstore? If so, you can always return/exchange if you kept your receipt. Please keep me posted, ok? I'm crossing my fingers for you! :)

  4. Thanks for this review . I was so excited to try it but I couldn't even open the bottle the morning that I was in a hurry and needed a fast fix. It sounds like I might still need a separate conditioner like you suggested but at least my hair won't be so dry.

  5. FYI The Wen pump is pretty bad too (perhaps they were just imitating it). It recommends 10-20 pumps to wash your hair and the pumps are pretty measly.

  6. I gave up shampoo over a year ago (transitioning from bottle blond to natural) and I turned to co-washing. My hair is fine and gets dry on the ends if I don't condition properly.

I have used Wen and Hair One. I also sometimes co-wash with less expensive brands like Suave. It's all worked out very well for me and my hair is in great shape now!

I was so excited about EverCreme. I used other Ever products before I started co-washing. And I was looking forward to getting the conditioner. When I saw a co-washing option I grabbed it without hesitation.

However, I was not impressed. I noticed the pump right away. Wen and Hair One are packaged with pumps, but the EverCreme pump made me pause. Literally, I was in the shower like ... that's it? Really?

I don't feel like L'Oreal has perfected the formula. EverCreme would not wash out all the way for me and left a rough residue on my ends. In fact, I had to deep condition tonight because my texture felt really weird. Nothing devastating, just ... off, you know?

My impression of Wen-like products is that even though they are thick creams, they are not made of heavy oils, if that makes sense. So when used properly they wash out completely leaving my fine hair moisturized but not weighed down at all.

A few of my personal tips: It took my scalp and hair about a month to get used to co-washing. It was a bit weighed down as my natural oils took over. I keep my hair completely drenched the whole time and work the product into my scalp under the shower head. Then I add some more product all over, leave it in for at least three minutes, and then get ALL of it out.

I wouldn't recommend the EverCreme Cleansing Conditioner to anyone. And if people don't like it I hope it doesn't discourage them from co-washing, because it's done great things for my hair.

    XOXO

    1. That's so funny, because when I used Hair One I had almost the EXACT same experience that you had with L'Oreal! Like I mentioned to Jeannine above, I think each person's experience will differ depending on what they were using up until the point they made the switch, and also what their hair was like leading up to using this product. I didn't experience ANY of the things you said this product did to your hair (thank goodness) but I can totally understand it. This product rinsed out of my hair quite easily, whereas Hair One didn't. And I haven't seen any of the rough residue on my ends that you have--in fact quite the opposite. My end have never felt softer!

Thanks for the tips about how long it took for your scalp to adjust. Very useful and helpful!

Sorry this one didn't work for you, but I totally agree that if one doesn't work, to not get discouraged because another similar product might work much better depending on your hair.

    2. Let me first say that I love, love, love Loreal Sulfate free Shampoo and conditioner! So when I saw this product - I grabbed it off the shelf and was so excited about using it. (I also bought frizz taming creme serum to accompany it.)

After using the product - I hated it! I used it once and either gave it away or threw it out. It left my hair so DRY!!! I have shoulder length dry hair and after using this product my hair felt like pine tree leaves. Also, I found the frizz taming creme unusable. I put in on both wet and dry hair it left my hair feeling like I'd used stiff hair gel.

I still use the Loreal Sulfate free shampoo - But I did not like the Conditioning shampoo. It definitely needs work

  7. I firs saw the ad for this in a magazine, and have been wanting to try it. Wen is part of my regular routine so I was dying to find a cheaper alternative. I will be heading to CVS tomorrow and hope to find this.

    3. AKB and BluMochi: I reviewed Hair One a few years ago here on the blog and it did NOT work for me (in fact, like I mentioned to AKB above, I pretty much had the experience that she had w/ the L'Oreal, whereas the L'Oreal worked beautifully for me). So I'm wondering if maybe it's an either-or thing. If L'Oreal doesn't work for you, perhaps Hair One will, and vice versa. Hum... :)

  8. I LOVE this product. I started growing my thin, frizzy, naturally curly hair out of a pixie (a desperation cut since I simply could not deal with straightening my hair three times a day anymore), and when it got long enough to curl I started using the "curly" techniques (nopoo, no heat, no silicone, etc) hoping it would allow me to wear my hair natural and not hate it. First let me say there is a transition period when you first remove the harsh cleansers and silicones from your hair... it literally goes into shock. It is so used to overproducing oil in compensation for the constant stripping, and the silicones that normally coat your hair give a false sense of condition, plus you are used to the feel of stripped/coated hair... not naturally healthy hair. But my experience after a week or two was soft, frizz free, manageable hair with gorgeous curl. I had used other "curly" products and was constantly in a seesaw between hair that was too "weighed down" and too clean... this is perfect. I also bought their leave in conditioner but find it unnecessary, if you have thicker hair it would probably work better for you.

The pump is awful, I have to use about 25 pumps and my hair is quite short, just above shoulder length wet/chin length dry. What you want to do is get some on your hands, rub them together, and use your fingers to apply it to your scalp in sections, scrubbing as you go. The scrubbing is what cleans vs a harsh chemical. Once you have your entire scalp done, run your fingers through the ends to distribute it through the ends and detangle, and scrunch it in. If your hair is long you may need to add a little bit. Leave it for several minutes while you finish your shower. When you rinse it, it dissolves and runs through the ends.

I use aloe vera gel as my leave in (pure aloe vera, no colors or additives), put it where I want it.. don't touch it... and it dries to a soft, dense curl with quite a bit of hold. I do use a curl activator (garnier) dry for second day hair, also amazing stuff.

    1. Thanks so much for the comment, and I'm SO glad this is working for you! I also love what you said about the adjustment period--I think it can be more dramatic for some people, and I wouldn't want anyone to be turned off if they didn't see instant results. Luckily my own personal results were pretty instant, because sometimes I just don't have the stamina to stay with a product that doesn't do it for me right off the bat!

Your comment made me realize that in the past day or so, when using my regular shampoo and conditioner, I'm noticing that my hair seems to be getting oily quicker than it did before. I bet you my poor scalp is confused and overcompensating, huh?

Glad to know I'm not the only one who dislike that darned pump! And thanks for the tip about scrubbing in sections--this really works better than trying to apply it like a standard shampoo. :)

  9. Oh, and I found a use for all my old silicone hair conditioners too... use them as shaving cream, works amazing lol. Totally an accident the first time, water in my eyes and grabbed the wrong bottle, but now it's HG for me.... no more razor burn.

    Replies
    1. Totally off topic but... when it comes to razors AFTER you use it and wash it out pour some rubbing alcohol on it then pat dry. The alcohol helps disinfect the blade and dries out the water so it tends to last longer.

  10. Im trying this now too! The pump was/is driving me crazy. I need 20 pumps to cover my hair. I use my LUSH shampoo bar for my scalp/roots because I can get really oily and use the EverCreme for the rest of my hair.

I tried using it as a leave-in the first couple of days but it leaves a film on my hair but I will keep going for another week to see if it changes like Jeannine said she heard.

Oh and mine doesn't smell like coconut at all. It reminds me of Sensual Amber from Bath & Body Works. I love love love that the scent lasts all day/night!

    1. Wow, I never thought to add a little extra something to my roots when using this product. Interesting! Also, did you know that they make an actual leave-in conditioner in this line? Maybe that will work better for you!

I just sniffed my bottle again and I'm not picking up BBW Sensual Amber--the coconut is definitely the strongest note for me. Funny how it can differ from person to person, huh? :)

  11. Thanks for the review! I was curious about this after I had seen an ad for it in a magazine. My hair is similar to yours: its very fine and I have a lot of it. But its not wavy at all... flat straight! I have been playing around with Wen and a cleansing conditioner from Silk Naturals. I have found I do like them, but can't use them every day. Every other day or every third day is best for me or else my hair gets too greasy :( I may have to check this one out. Thanks for the heads up about the pump!

    1. You are so welcome! And I agree--I could never use this product every day, but about twice a week seems to be perfect for me at this point (though like I mentioned above, these past few days my hair seems to be getting oily a lot quicker after using my traditional shampoo/conditioner, so I think my scalp's a bit out of whack, not knowing what to do at this point!). I would LOVE to hear how you like it compared to Wen, if you get it. :)

  12. Thanks for the review! My hair is super thick, super straight and pretty soft. I can't wash it every day though, I have to wait a few days, otherwise my hair will go all fly away on me! I have been looking for something new on my hair, seeing as how I have to switch shampoo's and conditioners every week or so. I can't use the same product on my hair for long, otherwise my hair will get all limp and oily! I might give this a try! My hair is pretty fried from all the dying that I do to it, and now that I am trying to grow it out, I want it to look it's best!

  13. Great review! I've been trying Hair One and so far I like it a lot! Just like you, I have oily hair too so I definitely have to shampoo but my ends are always so dry and tangled. Hair One is definitely helping make my hair soft and untangled. I use the shampoo and conditioner from the Ever line. I like them a lot! I tried using Hair One like 2 days in a row and my hair got oily really fast (but it was so soft!). So you're right, oily hair girls can't use the cleansing conditioners every day. It just doesn't work for us. So I've decided to only use it like 2-3 times a week instead.

  14. Oooh, thanks for the review on this! I've been using Suave Naturals conditioner to wash my hair most of the time for awhile now, but I've been considering trying this product out.

I just wanted to tell you that on the Wen bottle I remember it said that you should put in the conditioner, and then add a splash of water and then really scrub it into your hair, and then leave it in for a few minutes before rinsing out. Maybe you should try the splash of water thing. I bet that would help you get the conditioner to your scalp.

Every couple weeks/month I throw some baking soda into my handful of washing conditioner to clarify my hair, and that really seems to help keep me from getting too much build up. I usually do it when my roots seem to be getting greasy faster and my ends super dry. And I make sure to use a protein treatment at least once a week too. I like the Reconstructor one by Ion, from Sally Beauty.

    1. I have been using the Loreal EverCreme 5 in 1 hair cleanser. I have long, straight, fine textured, lots of hair. Wen was leaving a bad film on my scalp which caused some hair loss. Hair loss is common when you have a bad buildup on your scalp. However, natural(essential) plant oils actually help your hair keep from producing so much oil to catch up with a dry scalp without harming your hair or scalp. A large number of the ingredients in the Loreal EverCreme 5 in 1 seem to be mostly essential oils and good ones for your hair, at that. I can use it about 2 x a week, going one day in between without washing. Then however, I use a good clarifying shampoo every 3rd time, rinse really, really well, and use the Loreal 5 in 1 over the clarifying shampoo. It works for me, and my hair is in great condition. Hope this helps. BTW, the "splash of water" really helps as stated above!!! It lathers up the Loreal 5 in 1, and you get your scalp clean, but not stripped of natural oils. You won't need as much that way. It does say to add water, lather and rinse.

  15. I got the regular shampoo and conditioner from this line and i've used it about 3 weeks now and I HATE the way my hair feels after I've used it. I've switched over to the new Organix Awapuhi Ginger shampoo and conditioner and I love it.

  16. I have been using this for about 3 weeks now. The only thing I can't figure, even though I am trying to get the conditioner to my scalp to cleanse it too, is that my scalp seems soooooo dry now! I have visible flakes, and I never have had this problem before. Any ideas? I even get an extra pump or two so I can concentrate on my scalp areas! Very frustrating because I love how soft it is leaving my hair.

    1. Check your other products, including styling products... anything you put on your hair. Nopoo does not have sulfates or other harsh cleasers, so I cannot remove silicones or waxes. There are some that are water soluble as well. They come under many different names so you have to do a bit of research to find all the ways they can be listed, what you may be seeing is product buildup. If that is the problem you need to use a regular shampoo once to strip your hair, it is the only way to get that stuff out, then stop using whatever the offending product is. Hope that helps.

    2. Try treating your scalp to an argan oil scalp treatment on a night you are staying in for the evening. Take a few small drops, and run it directly into your scalp and gently massage wth fingertips. You can also run a few drops thru your hair's dry areas. Leave this on all night. Cover up your hair so you don't grease up your pillowcase. The next morning, wash it as usual with a good "no sulfate" shampoo. Pureology is great, but expensive, although it is very concentrated and lasts quite a while. Since you used a good Omega 3 oil full of antioxidants, it should not make your hair greasy because your scalp no longer has to produce excess oil to take care of your dry scalp. This is supposed to be proven science. Good luck!

  17. I have been really wanting to try Wen, but I think I will try this first! I was researching Wen on their website, and where you said that it is hard to distribute, but you noticed when you were rinsing it was like the water "releases" the product, Wen says in their "how to use" : "Work product into the hair, starting at the crown and working towards the ends, massaging vigorously. Apply a splash of water to help distribute the product evenly"..maybe it might be the same with L'Oreal! :)

  18. I'm glad "no poo" and co washing is going more mainstream. Hopefully that means I wont get as many weird looks when I tell people that I don't use shampoo. (Funny how people will go from "OMG, I love your hair, what do you do to it?" to "Ew, that's gross, you need to use shampoo")

I'll be on the look out for this product. I like that it also doesn't contain dimethicone. "Cones" are a BIG no no for anyone wanting to co wash. I never understood why Hair One from Sally's has cones.

  19. Hey G! I really love reading your reviews! :) I am dying to try this! No, I have never tried a No-Poo method...but actually have the Wen cleansing conditioner in my beauty closet ready to test. I will have to try both that and the L'Oreal and do a comparision. My hair is really, really long and fine in texture but very thick. Products labeled for thick/coarse hair usually work best for me since the ends are so dried out from highlights. This product sounds very nice and sounds like it would work for my hair (I would probably add a 2nd step too, just some conditioner to the ends). Great review!!!

  20. I have been using this for about three weeks now. I absolutely love it! My hair is fine, extremely curly and color treated. This cleansing conditioner has made my hair look a thousand times better and MUCH more easier to manage. I am getting much less frizz. i love the smell too. I wish I could find a perfume that smelled the same. I also bought the deep conditioner and am very pleased with it. my hair looks and feels so much better.

  21. I too have hair very similar to yours & was very excited to try this. I used it for about a month & really liked the results I got, but I too had some issues with tangling. I also purchased the spray-on leave in conditioner & that seemed to help. Instead of just spraying in on though I sprayed it into my hand & then just rubbed it through the bottom 1/3 of my hair & that helped tremendously! My big complaint was the bottle as well. Plus I really wish that the bottle was larger since I did need to use a good amount of the product, but still very pleased!

  22. Sounds like a wen compatible. Wen also comes in a pump and you have to pump 15-20 times for the recommended amount for your length. Weird how it didn't tell you how many pumps. I currently use wen but I would love to try this for the coconut smell! Sometimes my hair needs a good shampoo then I use wen.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Holy Moly. I would need 10 pumps of that to just even get half my hair. I go through a bottle of conditioner every month because I have long, thick, treated hair. This stuff would run out in 2 weeks.

  24. Hair ONE came out as a cheaper solution to Wen a while back and has been in drugstores and specialty beauty stores for a while. I suggest you try it out. Like the Everlast product, the pump is a bit small and during the start, you'll have to put a lot in -- my suggestion is to sprinkle a little water in when you work it through the first time and let it sit for at least double the amount of time. The results are pretty good on my Asian hair (not amazing) and though I liked it, the speed which you go through each bottle is astounding and that got too pricey for me to keep up.

  25. I have tried this too and agree about the useless pump. I use about 6 pumps for my short fine hair. I like it (love the scent) but I like WEN better. Tried Hair One and it made my hair feel as if it was covered in wax.

  26. Sometimes I have an issue with co-washing more cause its all mental, but I love the idea of this product. But like you G, the pump is a deal-breaker

  27. I haven't used shampoo in like 2 years, and instead I rub conditioner on my scalp as if it was shampoo. I don't use any particular brand, either, I usually just use whatever my mom buys. Before I started, I would wash my hair twice a week (out of laziness), and it would always be super greasy by that time. Now, I don't even feel my hair getting greasy. It gets a bit greasy by the time I wash it with conditioner once a week, but I really only wash it when I feel like it's too tangled (again, out of laziness, but I have curly hair as well).

I don't really know what's the function of a cleansing conditioner, since a regular one works for me...but it's true that the scalp produces way more oil than necessary because it's used to the drying effects of shampoo. Once the scalp is properly moisturized, it will produce much less oil.

  29. Pump is horrific. I am sure they will change this soon. I just put my product in a better container. I love the product though. It makes my hair feel much thicker and softer. I also recommend the actual shampoo and conditioner from the Ever-Creme line :)

  30. I've been no-pooing for a few months and am considering looking into sulfate free shampoo instead of my baking soda haha

Thanks for the review-i guess my search continues :-)

  31. I have naturally blonde hair which I color red. I want to try this product because I am looking for something that will hold my color longer. Is this safe for color treated hair?

    1. I gave this a try even though I didnt get a response. I didn't need much to wash my hair. My hair is shoulder length and very fine. I didn't see any red coloring when washing. Hair was easy to comb out. No conditioner needed. This left my hair very soft and shiny. Glad I saw this so hopefully I can keep my red hair longer without having to get touch ups.. I would def. recommend this.

  32. I wanted to say "sorry" to the lady who was asking about it being color safe... I was going to reply (yes, it is) but I got distracted... turns out I am allergic to this product. Well it's either that or aloe vera and I have never had any problem with aloe vera in the past so I'm pretty sure it is the co-wash. Wound up with a rash all over my head, NOT fun. This was the very best product I have found for my hair so I'm very disappointed.... and a bit scared to try something else. Never been allergic to a hair product before. Any co-wash veterans out there who might guess what the offending ingredient is? I have to find something else PRONTO, I used a regular shampoo last night to strip my hair, feels tons better, but my hair is awful: flat and frizzy.

  34. I do the no poo. I use suave naturals green apple to co wash then from sally's GVP conditioning balm to condition. when you go no poo you need to watch your styling products. no silicones or mineral oils are allowed since they are not water soluble. sometimes when transitioning from shampoo to going a no poo route your hair needs time to adjust. I have medium texture normal porosity 2b wavy hair. lately i have barely put any styling products in just used sweet almond oil and "plopping" my hair. also if you have curly/wavy hair you shouldn't use a terry cloth towel,it can lead to frizzy hair. I use an old cotton t shirt for my hair. My hair has never been nicer since I stopped using shampoos. I do have a low poo (ion color solutions color defense clarifying shampoo) just in case I use something with silicones or whatever (but I haven't really used anything lately).
the naturallycurly.com site has lots of information for those who want to try the no poo route. It's better for everyone's hair actually not just who are curly girls.

  35. I actually use and love this product. I am African American and have no relaxer in my hair. I go back and forth between straight hair and wearing my Afro pushed back. Once I use the conditioner I used a wide tooth comb while in the shower to work it through my hair. It works great and

  36. I wash my hair once a week with "regular" shampoo for color treated hair, and then all my other "wash" days are with the cleansing conditioner. If my hair feels greasy (usually around my hair line) on a non-shampoo day, I will pull my hair back in a pony tail, and ONLY wash the hairline around my face. It works out well for me. My hair would fall into the "normal" catagory with dry ends. I color treat my hair as well. Prior to starting this method I washed my hair every other day with shampoo followed by a deep conditioner and my hair pretty much looked and felt like straw. Now it is much much better.

  37. I just bought this and have very similar hair to the writer--thin, fine hair that gets very dry in the winter and my ends are usually very dry. I love this product. I agree that it's not an everyday thing unless I use it on ends only, as I can get an oily scalp, and I don't feel this product really cleans my roots/scalp, but, it is WONDERFUL for the rest of my hair. I've only used it twice, and my ends feel so much softer. I also use the conditioning spray they have too before I come my hair when wet. If I integrate in a few days of regular shampoo for my scalp, I think it's great.
