I'm in love: Dove Nutritive Therapy Nourishing Oil Care haircare collection

When Dove first came out with haircare products, I tried a few of them as soon as I spotted them at my local drugstore. Sadly, the products I tried didn't work for my particular hair type (I've got long, naturally wavy hair that's fine in texture, prone to frizzies, color-treated, oily at the roots and dry at the ends).

But then, a few months ago, a few of my fellow beauty bloggers told me that the new Dove Nourishing Oil Care line was, in a word, amazing. In particular, my pal Kelly said she "could not say enough good things" about these products. My buddy Paula echoed Kelly's sentiments and said I seriously needed to try these products for myself. Well, how could I ignore two friends, who know my hair type, telling me I needed to give Dove haircare another try?

(NOTE: If you're interested in trying any of these products for yourself, next week (starting 10/2) there are awesome deals at all three drugstores that I'll tell you about at the end of this post.)

Dove Nutritive Therapy Nourishing Oil Care haircare collection
(not pictured: Anti-Frizz Serum)

Dove kindly sent me the above products for review, and I'd love to share my personal experience with you after having used these products for two months now.

So let's start with the shampoo and conditioner:

Dove Nutritive Therapy Nourishing Oil Care Shampoo
(retail: around $4.50, 12 oz)

Ingredients:

Water (Aqua), Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Chloride, Glycol Distearate, Dimethiconol, Fragrance (Parfum), Glycerin, Carbomer, Gluconolactone, PPG-9, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Citric Acid, TEA

Dove Nutritive Therapy Nourishing Oil Care Conditioner
(retail: around $4.50, 12 oz)

Ingredients:

Water (Aqua), Cetearyl Alcohol, Dimethicone, Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Hydrogenated Coconut Oil, Behentrimonium Chloride, Fragrance (Parfum), Mineral Oil, Lactic Acid, Dipropylene Glycol, Amodimethicone, Potassium Chloride, Disodium EDTA, Gluconolactone, Trehalose, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, DMDM Hydantoin, PEG-150 Distearate, PEG-7 Propylheptyl Ether, Cetrimonium Chloride, Adipic Acid, Sodium Sulfate, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Yellow 5 (CI 19140),Red 33 (CI 17200), Blue 1 (CI 42090

Now I will be the very first to admit that when I see the word "oil" in the title of a shampoo, I'm heading for the hills. I've got a very oily scalp and hair that gets greasy about 24 hours after washing it. So oil and shampoo? No way. But you've got to TRUST ME with this one, lovelies. When Dove says this contains "weightless" oils, they're not kidding.

I'm really trying to curb my excitement about these two products because I don't want to ramble on like a crazy person. However, this shampoo and conditioner are unlike anything I've ever used before at the drugstore. They feel rich and luxurious in my hair, yet they don't leave behind any type of greasy or oily feel. Instead, my hair just feels moisturized. Not heavy or coated, just moisturized. And my roots don't get greasy after 24 hours--in fact I can almost go 48 hours before the "greasies" start to kick in, which is kind of unbelievable.

On the left is the conditioner, which is not thin or watery, yet it's not so thick that it's difficult to work into the hair. On the right is the shampoo, which is a bit thin, but please don't let that fool you. This product lathers up beautifully, and I find the thin texture actually helps in getting this shampoo deep down into every nook and cranny so that it can really work its magic.

And what magic might that be? Well allow me to show you some before-and-afters!

NOTE: the following before-and-afters were taken on two different days. For both photos, I did nothing to my hair after washing and conditioning it. I did not add any styling products to my hair in either photo, and I let my hair air-dry (no heat styling) in both photos.

In the photo above, I used one of my standard drugstore shampoos and conditioners. I did NOT use any styling products in the above photo, and I just let my hair air-dry as I usually do. As you can see, my hair has that lovely "hay-like" texture to it, and it's frizzy as well.

The above photo was taken on a different day; it's a total coincidence that I'm wearing a green top in both pictures (I love green). Anyway, please excuse the lighting and quality of this photo--I actually didn't plan on taking pictures this day but when I was driving in my car, I noticed that my hair just looked so healthy and curly that I had to pull over and snap this picture.  In this photo, I used Dove Nourishing Oil Care Shampoo and Conditioner and NOTHING ELSE. No styling products, no hair dryer, nothing. I just used the shampoo and conditioner and let my hair air-dry.

Can you see how curly and bouncy and healthy my hair looks, when compared to the first photo? I'm telling you, this stuff is incredible.

And guess what? My hair looks even more curly and bouncy and healthy when I use these products too:

Dove Nutritive Therapy Nourishing Oil Care Daily Treatment Conditioner
(retail: around $5.50, 8 oz)

Ingredients:

Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Dimethicone, Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Lactic Acid, Behentrimonium Chloride, Glycerin, Fragrance (Parfum), Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Dipropylene Glycol, Amodimethicone, Polyurethane-39, Petrolatum, Disodium EDTA, DMDM Hydantoin, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, PEG-7 Propylheptyl Ether, Cetrimonium Chloride, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, PEG-180M, Hydrogenated Coconut Oil, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Trehalose, Gluconolactone, Adipic Acid, Sodium Sulfate, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Iron Oxides (CI 77492).

So what's the difference between the regular conditioner and the Daily Treatment Conditioner? Well, there's this, for starters:

There are white and gold ribbons full of "conditioner" and "treatment" in this tube. For me, this product is thicker (i.e., not as easy to work through my hair as the regular conditioner). But oh, the results. If you have wavy hair that needs a lot of help when it comes to getting nice, defined curls, you need to give this conditioner a try. What this product lacks in detangling (it doesn't seem to have as much "slip" as the regular conditioner) it more than makes up for in its ability to turn my hair into one giant head of beautiful, soft ringlets.

Dove Nutritive Therapy Nourishing Oil Care Leave-In Smoothing Cream
(retail: around $5.50, 4 oz)

Ingredients:

Water (Aqua), Cetearyl Alcohol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethiconol, Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Glycerin, Behentrimonium Chloride, Fragrance (Parfum), Dipropylene Glycol, Mineral Oil, Lactic Acid, Petrolatum, Potassium Chloride, DMDM Hydantoin, Disodium EDTA, TEA-Dodecylbenzenesulfonate, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Hydrogenated Coconut Oil, Adipic Acid, Gluconolactone, Sodium Sulfate, Trehalose, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Yellow 5 (CI19140), Red 33 (CI 17200), Blue 1 (CI 42090)

I've been reaching for this smoothing cream when my hair is really acting up (frizzier than usual) and it does a great job at keeping my hair looking smooth. The texture is lightweight yet creamy, and just a few pea-sized drops are enough for one application (I usually apply this to the lower 75% of my hair). I like that it's easy to distribute through the hair, and I like that this product seems to work beautifully for when I'm wearing my hair curly or straight.

You know how when you have a shampoo and conditioner in your shower that you REALLY love, sometimes you'll use the stuff you don't love so much, just because you don't want use up the good stuff so quickly? That's exactly what I've been doing with this Dove collection. I look at it in my shower every day, and sometimes I have to slap my hand away from grabbing it because I just want to savor it, and know that I'll have enough on hand for when I really want my hair to look special. I cannot wait to try the Anti-Frizz Serum next.

If you have similar hair to mine and you think you might want to give these products a try for yourself, it's your lucky week! Here's the deal I mentioned at the beginning of this post:

In this week's Red Plum insert (in most 10/2 newspapers) there's going to be a BOGOFREE Dove haircare coupon (which is good for any of the products featured in this post). You can use that BOGOFREE coupon with any of the following sales, which all start on 10/2:
  • Walgreens AND Rite Aid: Dove shampoo, conditioner, treatments or stylers 2/$7 (final price with coupon: $3.50 for two products)
  • CVS: Dove shampoo, conditioner, treatments or stylers 2/$6 (final price with coupon: $3 for two products)
PS: If you don't get the Red Plum insert in your area, don't forget that you can always print out this $0.75 off coupon for Dove haircare and use that during this sale.

Kendal: I'm so sorry--I mean to grab the ingredients lists from the Dove site and include them in this post--I JUST added them to the post for each product. Yes, the shampoo does contain sulfates. Hope that helps!

beauxs mom: Yay!! Oh I am so thrilled to hear that these products are working as well for you as they are for me. Thanks so much for sharing. :)

  8. Argh. Wouldn't you know I'd see this awesome review right after I started trying to just CO wash or at least use shampoo without sulfates. ;_; Well, when my month is up and I let myself use shampoo again I'll definitely be investing in this whole line! Thank you SO much for the coupon info too!

Your hair looks like mine in the "straw-like" photo. And it looks awesome in the curly one!

  10. I'm probably in the minority for not knowing this but when do you use the "daily treatment conditioner"? Shampoo, conditioner, treatment conditioner? or alternate the two conditioners every other day? or ?

I've always seen the second condition and always wondered when one would use it! (I'm not hair savvy!)

  14. Hana: I'd actually love to know how that goes for you--I tried using SLS-free shampoos w/ CO washes a few years ago, and either I didn't have the patience to wait long enough for results, or my hair just didn't like it. But I know that it can work wonders for some people, so could you keep me posted? Thanks!

Ruby: No problem! I would love to know what you think if you try them! :)

Prairies: I don't think there's any set structure for when to use one or the other. I always just try both, and see which one works best for my particular hair, and then I stick with it. In the case of these Dove products, I find the regular conditioner to be a great every-day conditioner, because I love how it not only softens but detangles my hair. The Treatment conditioner, on the other hand, works very well for when I want lots of curls, so I reserve it for those days. Hope that helps!

    Kimberly: LOL! I completely understand!

After having used so many haircare products WITHOUT mineral oil and petrolatum and seeing them leave my hair icky and dry, I've accepted that those ingredients make my hair more manageable. But as with everything I review, to each his/her own. I completely understand that there are reasons for all of us to use or not use certain products and I would never judge one way or the other.

As for the polyurethane-39, I do believe that's a cosmetic-grade ingredient used for viscosity and not the same stuff that say, you use to seal floors. ;) Hey, did you know that polyurethane is in Spandex? I just found that out when I looked it up. :)

  15. I'll let you know how the CO washing and such goes for me. :D I started about a week ago. It's a little complicated because I want to use baking soda in my conditioner once every week or two, followed by a vinegar rinse, and I use a protein treatment once a week. But usually I just wash with cheap Suave conditioner, and then after my shower I put coconut oil on the length of my hair, and sometimes when it's mostly dry a little jojoba oil if the ends look dry at all. After a week my hair is sure a lot softer! I'm trying to do it until the end of October.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hana: Wow, I'd love to know how all of that ends up working for you! I tried baking soda a long time ago and found it to ultimately be too drying for me (especially when using protein treatments, which seem to suck all the moisture out of my hair). But the coconut oil sounds LOVELY (and I love jojoba too). Best of luck to you and please do keep me posted!

  17. Well... after taking a look at the ingredients in both the shampoo and conditioner, I'd ordinarily give them a pass, but your hair DOES look lovely in that picture.

I've been using sulfate-free shampoos and 'cone-free products for months, hoping that just giving it a "little more time" would yield great results... but, my hair actually doesn't seem to have changed much, and I have a tougher time with the frizzies and flyaways and curl formation. Maybe I should just give up the ghost and accept that my hair needs these ingredients to be somewhat cooperative.

  18. After reading this yesterday, I had to go out and buy them. I got all four, and hope my hair loves them as much as yours does. Your hair looks GREAT! I have thick, curly hair so we'll see how it goes. I think I will use them tomorrow.

  19. I find any product with heavy amounts of dimethicone or Mineral Oils makes me get scalp acne.

I wonder how long the results would last before you had to do a clarifying shampoo on your hair.

  20. G your hair does look amazing!!! As soon as I get through the rest of my $1 Suave shampoo & conditioner I am going to give these a try. I missed out on the coupons to buy them on sale but I'm willing to try them even for full price....w/the hope that I have as good of results as you!! I have oily hair & I'm constantly looking for products that will not make my hair greasy but still moisturize my dry ends!!! Thank you so much for your great reviews & your amazing blog!!! Hope that your Dad is doing well...his is in my prayers along with you & your family!!!

  21. Just a reminder...Sulfate strips the color from your hair. So, if you color your hair, you might want to pick products with no Sulfate in them.

  22. After reading all the great reviews for this stuff, I cannot believe how awful it smells. Kind of a cross between the old jerry curl oil from the 90s and a rotten apple. Yuck. And strong. My entire house stinks like this now.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I wonder how these products would work with straight thin hair. I agree that volumizing products can leave the hair feeling dry (story of my life), but I'm afraid to use moisturizing products due to them making my hair feel heavy...

  24. Hi!! I read about your post when I search through the internet,
just bought the this product, want to give a try, but somehow I feel unsure of this, anyway, your post here convince me to try it!

And I want to share with u, that I have long-wavy-curly hair (which I guess suit for this shampoo type), BUT at the same time, I'm having dandruff, not serious type as it doesn't look like a snowflakes. Whatt really annoys me isI feel itchy so much. How can I dealing with this problem (at the same to take care my wavy-curly hair & dandruff), can I use this dove (nourishing oil care), or should I use anti-dandruff shampoo too?? I really have no idea, any advice?

    ReplyDelete
  25. G, it's been a long time since you posted this, and I did enjoy this shampoo and conditioner, but did Dove do away with it? I can't find it, and there's something similar call Anti-frizz but it has different ingredients. Do your have any idea what happened?
