Maximizing my CVS Extra Bucks

I mentioned on Twitter that I felt like I won the lotto when I scanned my CVS card yesterday. The red scanner box printed out my quarterly Extra Bucks ($4), then I also got another $5 Extra Bucks (Beauty Club reward) AND a coupon for $5 off when you buy 2 Revlon eye or lip products. Score!

Since I know I personally love seeing how people maximize their beauty purchases at the drugstore, I thought I'd share how I put my Extra Bucks and coupons to good use yesterday.

OK, here we go:

In my first transaction, I purchased the following items:

John Frieda Go Blonde Controlled Lightening Spray (retail: $9.99)
This is a brand new product that looks like a grown-up version of Sun In--remember Sun In? Anyway, since my hair is pretty light these days, I thought it might be fun to use this for root touch-ups instead of breaking out the usual box of color. It's heat-activated (you run your hair dryer over your hair after you apply it).

John Frida Full Repair Condtioner (retail: $7.49)
I've been wanting to try a product from this line for a while now, and since I'm running low on conditioners, I thought I'd start with this.

Revlon Age Defying Spa Concealer in Light Medium (retail: $10.99)
I've heard so many raves about this one--it's finally time for me to see what all the fuss is about.

Revlon Colorburst Lipstick in Petal (retail: $8.99)
This is one of the new shades from the Colorburst line.

Without sales or coupons, my total for this purchase would have been $37.46.

But now it's time for the magic:

First and foremost, I had an email coupon from CVS for $5 off a $25 purchase, so we can immediately deduct $5 from the total:
$32.46
Revlon is BOGO1/2OFF right now, so that shaved off $4.50:
$27.96
I also had that $5 Revlon coupon from the scanner box:
$22.96
John Frieda shampoos and conditioners are on sale for $5 each this week so subtract $2.49 for the conditioner:
$20.47
I also had a newspaper coupon for $2 off any John Frieda shampoo or conditioner, so subtract another $2 from the conditioner:
$18.47
There was a $2 off instant peelie coupon on the John Frieda Controlled Lightening Spray:
$16.47
I also had a coupon for $1 off any Revlon Colorburst product from an old Sunday newspaper:
$15.47
Then I used my $4 Quarterly Extra Bucks:
$11.47
And finally, I used my $5 Extra Bucks from the CVS Beauty Club.

GRAND TOTAL OUT OF POCKET FOR THIS PURCHASE: $6.47

Transaction #2:

Purex Complete Crystals Fabric Softener in Fresh Spring Waters - x2 (retail: $6.49 each)
I've heard a lot of good things about this new softener and, you know me and gimmicks, so I had to get these.

Dawn Dishwashing Liquid in New Zealand Springs (retail: $1.69)
I'm a sucker for new dishwashing liquid scents, so, well, it was calling to me.

Without sales or coupons, my total for this purchase would have been $14.67.

First off, when you spend $10 on John Frieda products this week (which I did--see transaction #1) you receive $3 Extra Bucks, which I applied to THIS purchase, so that brings my total down to:
$11.67
Purex Crystals are on sale at CVS this week 2/$8 so deduct $4.98 since I bought two bottles:
$6.69
Next, I had two $2 off coupons for Purex Crystals (one I got from the Sunday paper and the other my mom gave to me from her Sunday paper) so that's another $4:
$2.69
The small bottles of Dawn are on sale at CVS this week for $0.99 so deduct $0.70:
$1.99
And finally, I had a P&G coupon for $0.25 off any size Dawn dishwashing liquid.

GRAND TOTAL OUT OF POCKET FOR THIS TRANSACTION: $1.74

The total retail value for both of the above transactions: $52.13
My total out of pocket for both transactions: $8.21

So basically I got everything you see in the above photo for roughly the price of just ONE Colorburst lipstick.

I realize that's nowhere near the level of "Extreme Couponing" but I'm pretty darned happy with my savings and you can totally do this too if you just clip your coupons and watch the sales!

Thanks for reading, and please feel free to share your recent budget-friendly purchases in the comments. I love hearing them!

  1. IMO, what you did IS extreme couponing! I have never seen or heard of anyone get away with that much coupon stacking in Canada. Awesome job, G. I would do the same if I could!

  3. I always love doing my couponing at CVS. That is normally where I do most of it! The only thing though, usually I see something that I don't have a coupon for that I must have, so that usually messes me up! lol

-Also, I am in LOVE with the New Zeland Dawn scent! Which reminds me I need to hit the DG to get some more!

    -Many Smiles!

  4. Such a great job! I'm trying to be more coupon savy etc. but I am having such bad luck with the coupon machines. I always get candy ones that's it. I'm so jealous!

  5. So I'm new to purchasing at CVS/Walgreens (i've just gone with Walmart and Target in the past) Do you get to do all this because you have a CVS card? The couple times I've been in CVS they've asked if i had a CVS card, and i always wonder about getting one, but then I'm afraid I'm going to have to pay money for it or that i won't know how to use it. Any suggestions for a newbie? :)

  7. Thanks for posting your deal!! I have been "extreme" couponing for the past year. Just these past few weeks, I've come home with HUGE bags of stuff (including $100 worth of baby diapers) and actually MADE money on all of it. (at Walgreens) I LOVE getting awesome freebie deals on cosmetics there, plus household stuff that we all need. If you haven't already, I'd encourage you to checkout wildforwags.com and totallytarget.com. It shows you how you can get awesome deals at both stores every week. :) Love your blog!

  10. Ashley: I'm so sorry that you lovely Canadian gals don't have access to these types of coupons/sales. Maybe someday soon (I hope)!

Anne: I definitely will! Thanks. :)

Ashley: I love that scent too! And I hear you about wanting to buy things that are not on sale. It requires a lot of self-restraint and I don't always have that! lol

ACE: Oh my gosh, I know the feeling! For the past several weeks, all I've been getting is candy coupons too, so that's why yesterday I felt like I won the lotto. lol!

Sarah: The CVS card is FREE to get, so you won't pay a dime for joining. I did accomplish this trip by using my CVS Extra Bucks (which are basically like store credit for your next purchase) and also by clipping coupons from the newspaper and keeping an eye on the sales. If you don't have a CVS card, you DO NOT get the sale prices, so it really makes a lot of sense to get the card, especially since it's free. You can see more details about the CVS extra care program (and also Walgreens and Rite Aid programs) in a piece I wrote for
    BeautyJunkiesUnite here
. And also, there's a ton of info about saving money on beauty purchases in my post titled:

    . Hope that helps.

clementine: lol! You know what they say: "It takes money to make money." ;)

Ruby's Beauty: Yes, I do know those sites and they're great! Thanks for sharing them, and CONGRATS on your savings! That is AMAZING! :D

Lacey: LOL! Thank you so much, honey. xo

Patrice: lol!! You and me both! ;)

  18. Oh I know exactly what your talking about when you scan that CVS card and get the coupons and extra bucks. I was in there this last Monday doing the same thing. My hubby was with me and he must have thought I was a maniac. I ended up getting four of the Happiness boosting blushes for 2 bucks a piece! I hadnt gotten any yet because my stores have all been sold out. I live in a very small town with barely any shopping or options.

I had a ton of coupons and extra bucks and ended up getting the Olay Pro X exfoliating wash, which I love, got a sample when I bought my Pro X brush.. Well it retails for 20 bucks. Had 3 coupons for it, so ended up getting it for 4.50!!
When I was done and at checkout my total came to 98.64 without coupons. After he scanned my coupons I ended up paying 28.00 and change. It was such an exciting moment and I know exactly what ur talking about when you say its like you won the lotto = )
I left with a Revlon color-stay foundation, Photo Ready powder, four Happiness Booster blushes, the new Always Maxi-pads, the new Venus Pro skin razor and a few other house-hold items. Such an exciting buy! Made my day. And I owe it all to your blog. You have taught me how to be thrifty in this tough economy!

  19. ashwillis: Oooh, I just looked inside my box and I didn't get the fab offer you got, but I DID get a $1 coupon for my next John Frieda purchase. Thanks for the heads-up. :)

Kellie Rae: Honey, your post almost brought tears to my eyes! I swear to you, what you said made me so happy I could almost cry. I'm so thrilled that you were able to get such an amazing deal at CVS this week, and if my blog had even a small role in that, I just couldn't be more happy. Thanks SO much for sharing that with me. xoxo

  20. I am happy you liked my comment = ) Its the straight truth too. You have really made drugstore shopping a more satisfying experience for me than going to a make-up counter and breaking the bank, like I used to before.I have your blog saved in my favorites and every morning I get up and make a cup of coffee and go straight for your blog. Its the first site I check out every flippin morning! It is by far the BEST beauty blog I have found yet. Thank you again for all that you do for this blog. I just just adore it and you!!
